Carelessness is mainly due to the extensive electronics package, which has been further refined for the current model. Traction control, ABS, various driving modes, everything sensitive to lean angles, of course.

And don’t forget: Both the electronics and the tires have to do the hard work, as it is important to keep the unprecedented violence of the 1,301 cubic V2 in check, even when it is throttled to 100 hp “Rain”-mode. In the other driving modes, it remains at 160 hp and just under 140 Newton meters, but now Euro 5 pacified through numerous internal engine measures.

In all three settings (Sport, Street, Comfort) the chassis responds smoothly, which you can hear with pleasure, especially at slower speeds, as required by a rainy Canary Island, for example.

Great praise also for the newly selected Mitas tires named “Terra Force-R”, which is mounted in a specially mixed special identifier.

The optional “Suspension-Pro”-Package allows, in addition to a perfectly functioning fully automatic mode and automatic pre-tension control, also allows manual adjustment of the front and rear.

The distance cruise control is made possible by a radar eye in the front as well as the extensive electronic networking of all components. If the vehicle in front accelerates, the KTM also accelerates. If the vehicle brakes, however, the 1290 also brakes

This, as well as the numerous other features, is operated with a completely new operating logic. The new handlebar fittings, already known from the latest Super Duke, as well as a strongly graphic-oriented display on the large cockpit require a bit of getting used to, but still make it much easier to master the inevitable abundance of goodies in this class.

Almost everything is different: only 10 percent of the motorcycle remained untouched, as the Austrians proudly announce

This driving by beacon is of course aimed at motorways and well-developed expressways, for the “stress-free journey to the next adventure” as KTM says. Spooky as I said, but it is a real balm for the nerves, especially since the system works reliably and gently.

The high-end Austrian is now available for 18,495 euros plus additional costs. Included “Suspension Pro”, freely adjustable driving modes (“Rally pack”) and other little things such as hill start assistance or the excellent quickshifter, you can quickly get to the almost usual 20,000 euros in this class with a full hut.

Finely tuned: Ergonomics: the variable seat height has decreased (849 to 869 millimeters), the handlebars have been moved a little closer to the driver and the now two-part seat bench is more generously upholstered

The new, three-part tank with the flanks, which are drawn down deeply like the 890 Adventure, is more noticeable optically than ergonomically.

The Technokrad from Mattighofen
You overcome all conceivable corona firewalls to test the new KTM 1290 Super Adventure S on Fuerteventura, and then that: The driving day is one of the average 19 rainy days on the barren Canary Island.

Cause for annoyance? Not at all, with the technology flagship from Austria you are prepared for these and many other adversities of motorcycle life. Including a real piece of science fiction.
This carelessness is mainly due to the extensive electronics package, which has been further refined for the current model. Traction control, ABS, various driving modes, everything sensitive to lean angles, of course. What is new is the even more powerful brain, also known as “IMU”, that every movement of the motorcycle is permanently recorded in six dimensions and that all systems are connected and controlled.
Rain goddess with a kick
The zeal for work of this lightning-fast nervous system can be observed rather than felt, which speaks for the quality of the system. When combining maximum vigilance “Rain mode” and a maximum of wet ground, you can watch a wildly flickering TC light even with the smallest movements on the throttle, without even feeling the slightest hint of a rear wheel slip. Incidentally, even in sixth gear when driving straight ahead. You don’t experience it every day. Great praise also for the newly selected Mitas tires named “Terra Force-R”, which is mounted in a specially mixed special identifier. In the absence of a premium brand image, one can turn up one’s nose at this, but this is not justified. Under these circumstances, the rubbers provide reliable grip and quick confidence.

And don’t forget: Both the electronics and the tires have to do the hard work, as it is important to keep the unprecedented violence of the 1,301 cubic V2 in check, even when throttled to 100 hp “Rain”-Mode. In the other driving modes, it remains at 160 hp and just under 140 Newton meters, but now Euro 5 pacified through numerous internal engine measures. On the few dry passages, this reactor impresses with its familiar hard impact and seemingly endless pressure, regardless of gear and speed. The somewhat better manners are new. Due to its design, it still does not like very low speeds and high gears, but apart from these lowlands it hangs even in the sharpest driving mode “Sports” direct, but soft on the gas.
Super adventure with super chassis
Speaking of soft: the previous Super Adventure already had an extensively adjustable, semi-active chassis, which, however, always lacked a bit of sensitivity when it was first addressed. The update has brought a noticeable improvement here. In all three settings (Sport, Street, Comfort) the chassis responds smoothly, which you can hear with pleasure, especially at slower speeds, as required by a rainy Canary Island, for example. It is also pleasing that this new creaminess is not accompanied by a lack of feedback, as is often the case with electronic chassis. Yes the KTM still doesn’t give in as quickly as she does BMW R 1250 GS from Munich. On the whole, however, there is agility that is appropriate to the corporate credo, paired with iron stability. A balancing act that the Mattighofener attribute to the now slightly longer swing arm with the steering head moved backwards at the same time.

Sometimes more, sometimes less hardness
The big one “Ready to race”-The level of hardness that can be pumped into the chassis if necessary is also appropriate. At least if you opt for the optional “Suspension-Pro”-Package decides, which in addition to a superbly functioning fully automatic mode and automatic pre-tension control also allows manual adjustment of the front and rear. Still going well, but you have to want to. On the other hand, there is less rigidity in the finely tuned ergonomics, because the variable seat height has decreased (849 to 869 millimeters), the handlebars have been moved a little closer to the driver and the now two-part bench is more generously upholstered, especially in the passenger compartment. Feels a bit more integrated than before and lets you get both legs safely on the floor from a height of 175 centimeters. The new, three-part tank with the flanks, which are drawn down deeply like the 890 Adventure, is more noticeable optically than ergonomically.
Beam me up
Now what about science fiction? May I help you: “Adaptive cruise control.” Automatically ensures that the preselected distance to the person in front of you is maintained and at least initially looks as realistic as the power from Star Wars. This is made possible by a radar eye in the front and the extensive electronic networking of all components. If the vehicle in front accelerates, the KTM also accelerates. If the vehicle brakes, on the other hand, the 1290 also brakes, depending on the degree of deceleration required, either by closing the throttle or by automatic braking. This driving by beacon is of course aimed at motorways and well-developed expressways, for the “stress-free journey to the next adventure” how KTM says. Spooky as I said, but it is a real balm for the nerves, especially since the system works reliably and gently. Only if a motorcycle in front dictates the pace do you have to steer a little actively to get the “Beacon” not to lose what you get out of it quickly. For all skeptics: don’t worry, the system can be fine-tuned on the one hand, but above all can be switched off, a conventional cruise control is also on board.

A radar eye in the front as well as the extensive electronic networking of all components are the components of the distance radar: If the vehicle in front accelerates, the KTM also accelerates. The same applies to braking.

What this first driving report cannot possibly achieve with regard to everything that is still new about the great KTM, only 10 percent of the motorcycle remained untouched, as the Austrians proudly proclaim. If you are interested, our multi-part video series from our editorial colleague Dresler is recommended “Dry test” detailed on all innovations of the KTM 1290 S Adventure comes in.

What do you think of assistance systems on motorcycles??

Anything that increases security is welcome.
They haven’t lost anything on the motorcycle.
Conclusion
The sportiest offer in the travel enduro world: the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S still underpins this claim with its angry Power-V2 and its direct footwork. Nevertheless, there was now more fine-tuning and feature updates instead of performance updates, which is the core of the “High performance adventure bikes” not watered down, but made more accessible. If you have the change to play in the premier class between BMW GS and Ducati Multistrada V4.
