The generous range of flip-up helmets makes it unnecessary to use a saw.

Yes, MOTORRAD is totally unfair. Or what should you call it when a 120 euro helmet has to compete against a 500 euro model? On the other hand, in no other helmet category is there just one single claim as a reason for purchase: “It should be a flip-up helmet!” Potential buyers of motorcycle helmets often don’t ask for much more at the beginning. Practically all current flip-up helmets have been tested in accordance with the current ECE-R 22-05 helmet standard. Fold-out sun visor, removable interior fittings, one-handed operation of the chin section, practical ratchet lock – all of these offer this, with a few exceptions. Flip-up helmet buyers usually don’t have a particular (helmet) brand affinity – with the exception of BMW – and so the customer stands in front of the shelf, somewhat confused, and only understands flip-up helmets. Wearing it for five minutes is of little help.

To bring some light into the darkness of the flip-up helmet, MOTORRAD ordered 14 current flip-up helmets. In addition to the extensive practical test (see box on page 75), the test candidates also had to endure an extensive laboratory program at TuV Rheinland in Cologne. MOTORRAD deviated from the previously usual ECE test procedure in a few points. The stripping test was carried out with all candidates with the chin section open. Of course, the helmet manufacturers, whose models are only ECE-approved as full-face helmets, expressly point out that these helmets may only be used when they are closed. But this is exactly what is not always taken to heart in practice; and that’s exactly why MOTORRAD chose the aforementioned test setup. The five models, also approved as jet helmets, were within the limit of 30 degrees; in some other models the values were significantly higher, but were not included in the scoring; because as I said: the manufacturers prohibit open-top driving The shock absorption values achieved were all in the green (ECE) range, but renowned accident researchers such as Florian Schueler from the University of Heidelberg, who advised MOTORRAD, set realistic limit values that are just half as high – specifically HIC 1200 instead of 2400 In order to get there, some premium manufacturers in particular still have certain challenges ahead of them. There are already good, practical flip-up helmets, now you can finally build even safer ones!

Airoh Mathisse RS X.

Providers: Buse, Tel. 02471/12690, www.buese.com; Price: 199.95 euros; Sizes: XS to XL; Weight: 1500 ± 50/1592 grams (manufacturer information / L weighed); Colour: Matt black; Helmet shell: Thermoplastic (unspecified); Closure: Ratchet; Country of Manufacture: Italy; ECE approval mark: E 3 (Italy); Replacement visor: clear, 29.95 euros; Furnishing: Visor with pinlock preparation; Sun visor; Removable cheek pads and lining, helmet pouch.

plus

Comfortable putting on and taking off; comfortable lining; good suitability for glasses; very good shock absorption values; can be removed without opening the chin part if necessary; relatively easy.

minus

Chinstrap padding much too short; absolutely unsatisfactory fit: chin section too short, padding on the sides not strong enough, helmet sits much too high; from 80 km / h strong drafts, from 100 km / h unpleasant drafts, visor does not close tightly; high noise level; Visor change only possible with tools; Sun visor lever too small; Chin part lever is very hidden; no adjustable chin part ventilation; Head ventilation ineffective, lever much too small; very economical equipment; mediocre workmanship, very plastic appearance.

Conclusion

Equipment, fit, aerodynamics, acoustics, processing quality – the Airoh weakens at every nook and cranny. With one exception: the good shock absorption values save it “satisfying”.

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfying

minus

Slightly difficult to put on and take off due to the tight fit; Impact absorption values for side impact only average; unfolded very “top heavy”.

Conclusion

A lot of quality for a lot of money – the sporty, crisp-fitting BMW system helmet is rightly a bestseller: quiet, perfectly ventilated, top-quality workmanship. Shock absorption? Still okay, but there could be more.

plus

Very easy to put on and take off; good to very good fit; comfortable lining; lies quietly even at high speeds; Visor absolutely tight, with practical ventilation position; easy change of visor (but relatively many individual parts); very simple sun visor operation; very good suitability for glasses; sufficiently large and effective ventilation slides.

minus

Chin part lever a bit stiff and can only be operated with a lot of pressure on the chin (pulling would be more comfortable); Visor not completely fog-free under extreme conditions (continuous rain); from 80 km / h stronger wind noise; relatively difficult.

Conclusion

Decent quality at a fair price. The Caberg does not have any real weaknesses. The difference to the top league is made by the somewhat coarse mechanics, but it may just be a matter of getting used to.

minus

Visor ventilation position too far; Visor does not close very tightly; from 80 km / h high, from 100 km / h extremely high noise level; Sun visor actuation hooked; Chin ventilation slider very hidden and without function; Chin part lever not marked and z. B. not recognizable for first aiders; relatively difficult.

Conclusion

The price is really cheap, the fit and shock absorption are not that bad, but many flaws in detail spoil the fun of the flip-up helmet. At least if you drive over 100 km / h more often.

Conclusion

HJC finished the last two MOTORCYCLE helmet tests as the test winner; this time it’s enough “only” to a place in the (good) midfield. When it comes to price-performance, the comfortable IS-MAX is right at the top.

Conclusion

Decent shock absorption values, moderate fit and weaknesses in practicality – there it is again, the problem of many discount offers. But it’s worth a (fit) self-test.

Conclusion

Sorry, dear hamburgers – that was probably nothing. This helmet isn’t cheap, it’s cheap. After all, the shock absorption values are absolutely okay, but unfortunately it is not practical.

minus

No sun visor; weakest shock absorption values in the test field.

Conclusion

* 100 to 75 points = very good, 74 to 65 points = good, 64 to 55 points = satisfactory, 54 to 40 points = sufficient, 39 to 0 points = unsatisfactory.

Conclusion

That should hardly come as a surprise: The expensive top dogs are at the top of the final bill, the very cheap models are at the bottom. But if you take a closer look at the table, you might be a little surprised, because of all things with the criterion “security” (which results from the shock absorption values) the cheap homes often score better than the premium models. So that we don’t get ourselves wrong: none of the flip-up helmets tested is unsafe or even dangerous; All safe – the consequence for price-sensitive buyers can be to step up with the “Good” judged and affordable midfield look around.

* Surcharge on Sigma post, ** Surcharge on edge anvil.

Since the last MOTORRAD helmet test (background story in issue 14/2010), a tougher pace has been called for in the laboratory test, because now it is no longer just the helmet standard ECE-R 22-05 that is retested. At TuV Rheinland in Cologne, 42 brand new helmets in size M, three per helmet model, had to prove that they could do more. While in the ECE test six precisely defined (and thus “conforming to standards” test points that can be reinforced meet a standardized anvil, the entire side of the helmet slammed onto a Sigma post during the MOTORRAD test – not a standard test body, but the part that stands on the side of the road and holds a guardrail.

The TuV professionals Peter Schaudt and Sven Seidel dropped the helmets at 7.5 m / s and 5.5 m / s on the nasty post. According to ECE, the limit value for the maximum permissible acceleration is 275 g; the HIC value calculated from this and taking into account other parameters (duration of force action) (“Head Injury Criterion”, a measure for the expected traumatic brain injuries) may be a maximum of 2400 according to the ECE standard. A second helmet was hit hard on the chin at 7.5 m / s (ECE: only 5.5 m / s); according to ECE, the maximum acceleration value of 275 g also applies here. A HIC value can be calculated, but it says little because part of the force is passed on to the chinstrap. The third helmet in each case ended up in the stripping test: A maximum twist angle of 30 degrees applies as the ECE upper limit. A value that all helmets approved as open face helmets (Nolan, Probiker, Scorpion, Shark, Suomy) do not exceed.

Lidl flip-up helmet

The Lidl Crivit flip-up helmet V210.

At the end of February 2011, exactly at the time of the MOTORRAD laboratory and practical tests, the discounter Lidl offered a flip-up helmet as a promotional item. MOTORRAD bought the 59.99 euro “Crivit flip-up helmet V210” and let it run out of competition in the test. With sun visor, ratchet lock and accessory package (replacement visor, “Winter comfort collar”, “Acoustic cushions”, second set of cheek pads) the equipment turned out to be lavish. In the practical test, however, it turned out to be thick: poor fit, scratchy lining, stiff visor, worn out sun visor slider, fiddly visor change, hooked chin part operation, loud and drafty when driving. In terms of shock absorption values, however, the cheap home-made company was able to convince and was well below the limit values. So it would have for a test verdict “sufficient” got.

This is how MOTORRAD tests

“Test center” Gemenos: For a week we went to the south of France with a sprinter, lots of equipment and three bikes.

February is not necessarily the most pleasant time to extensively test helmets and motorcycle clothing in Germany. It is now a good tradition for MOTORRAD to stay in Gemenos in the south of France (east of Marseille) for a week and thoroughly scrutinize the products with three editors and over many 100 kilometers. In 2011 the endurance testers Ducati Multistrada, Kawasaki Z 1000 and Yamaha Super Tenere served as mobile pedestals. It rained heavily on three out of four days of driving – the statements on the tendency to fogging up the visor are particularly well-founded. The driving was mainly on very winding country roads, some expressway stages allowed up to 180 km / h. The MOTORRAD team used the evenings for “Dry tests”, i.e. the detailed assessment of fit and user-friendliness – based on this, among other things. the “Editors’ hit lists”. Back in Germany, three new helmet test samples were sent to TuV Rheinland in Cologne, where they got a hard hat on during the shock absorption test.
