E10 fuel has been available in Germany for 10 years, but it has not really caught on. The E5 fuel that it was supposed to replace is still there. It remains to be seen whether Shell’s Blue Gasoline will bring about more change here.

Proven long-term damage from E10 petrol

The Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT (Institute for Environment, Safety and Energy Technology) examined the effect of E10 fuel on the Euro 4 filters for fuel vapor return. The result: biofuel damages the filters.

In February 2011 Germany introduced the bio-fuel E10. With a lot of confusion about compatibility in the motorcycle. Of Buyer strikes and dramatically low demand can be read at that time. Long-term tolerance is beyond question, at the latest with the injection that is widely used. The tank behavior has according to one ADAC study but not significantly changed to the E-10, the technical concerns are still great. Rightly so it seems.

Filters protect against petrol vapors

With the introduction of the Euro 4 standard for motorcycles in 2016, filters that collect the fuel vapors from the tank, bind them and then return them to the combustion process will be mandatory. Such filters mainly consist of activated charcoal: If gasoline evaporates in the tank, this filter catches the molecules and binds them in the charcoal. When the engine is running and the exhaust gas control is active, the filters are sucked empty and the vapors in the intake air are mixed in for combustion.

Mandatory in new models since 2016: a filter system for the fuel vapors. Their function can only be impaired by E-10 vapors.

E10 does harm in the long run

The Fraunhofer Institute for Environment, Safety and Energy Technology (UMSICHT), together with the University of Siegen, has examined the long-term effect on this component of reducing emissions on the motorcycle and has come to the conclusion that the vapors of the E10 fuel damage the filters in the long term. From this follows a recommendation by the researchers to explain function tests of these filters as part of the main investigation.

BMW Motorrad reacts immediately

When asked by BMW Motorrad, the answer was prompt and clear: The activated carbon filters from BMW had been tested for use with the US E27 fuel and, under these difficult conditions, were designed to last the entire life of the vehicle, said a spokesman for BMW Motorrad.

The activated carbon filters from BMW are supposed to withstand even the aggressive e27 fuel from the USA for a lifetime.

What was tested?

The Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT has monitored and measured the absorption behavior of the activated carbon over many usage cycles in a specially developed test facility. “This system now makes it possible to examine up to 300 cycles of controlled conditioned activated carbons according to the “service life” of a car. In particular, we analyzed the influence of water in the rinsing or ambient air on the filter. We use simple ‘model gasoline’ (n-pentane with 10 percent ethanol)”, says Eva Schieferstein, head of the project.

This high number of test runs exceeds the one-time test currently required by law. And the investigation at a higher, more practical air humidity than the required 50 percent is more intensive. This more realistic combination of the variables showed that vapors from E10 fuel and the bound water weaken the activated carbon in real operation more in the long term than normal E5 fuel. According to UMSICHT, the result is in line with studies by TuV Nord and the Swedish TuV, which also show that long-term use of biofuels can cause the filters to fail.

E10 approval for my motorcycle means for me: I fill up with E10.

Under no circumstances will that get into my tank!

My car gets E10, my bikes get premium fuel.

Conclusion

So E10 does harm after all. The hydrophilic nature of the E10 reduces the binding capacity of the mandatory activated carbon filters, which allows more unhealthy gasoline vapors to escape from gasoline tanks. If you imagine that in cities like Delhi, where a tanker truck evaporates gasoline from millions of mopeds every day, it is a major setback for the environment and health. But the industry seems prepared, as the prompt statement from BMW expresses. Here one tests much more violent types of fuel than E10 and uses the more resistant filters in all vehicles. If the researchers recommend the main inspection and the badge is refused, the said industry should promptly have an answer ready, but it cannot be: Unlucky, it is a wear part. In fact, the filter requires homologation according to Euro 4. Either way, the result is super plus on the mills of the E-10 deniers.
