Functional underwear and sports bras put to the test
The right climate for every season

In the MOTORRAD practical test, six functional underwear sets demonstrate that quality does not always have to have its price. Plus as an extra for the ladies: four sports bras show what they can withstand in use on bends and bends.

Even the best synthetic fiber mix cannot cool on hot summer days and warm in the dead of winter. That is why MOTORRAD tested two sets each for summer, transitional periods and winter. When it comes to underwear for the summer, one thing is particularly noticeable: good functional underwear doesn’t have to be expensive.

Functional underwear for the transitional period

The requirements for functional underwear for the transitional period are particularly high. On sunny days it can still get pretty warm, but the cool airstream is already creeping through every crack. Well-fitting ends on the neck and arms and a complex mix of materials are therefore prerequisites for passing this test field. One might think that unisex lingerie would have a particularly difficult time, as it wants to do justice to both male and female forms. Modeka’s Tech Dry motorcycle underwear teaches us better. It is true that women should definitely try on the underwear beforehand, otherwise there may be problems with the length of the legs. Otherwise Tech Dry convinces with very good material quality, comfortable fit and extra wide cuffs on the neck and arm cuffs. The synthetic fabric is particularly comfortable to wear on the skin at temperatures above 15 degrees.

The situation is different with Dane’s laundry. This really shows its strengths on cooler days. The high proportion of spandex ensures elasticity, and the tight-fitting cuffs and the slightly thicker fabric help you stay at operating temperature even in strong winds.

Dane Performance (Fall)

Functional underwear in the test

Providers: www.motoport.de
Price: Shirt: 59.95 euros, pants: 49.95 euros
Sizes: S-XXXL
Material: 64% polyester, 25% viscose (made from bamboo), 11% spandex

Positive: very good workmanship; slightly warming material mix; soft, tight-fitting cuffs prevent unpleasant drafts, good fit; smooth and robust outer fabric does not form pods when rubbed; reliable removal of sweat, no moisture build-up

Negative:a bit too warm at temperatures around 15 degrees; repeated follow-up when putting on and taking off

Conclusion: The performance set from Dane is particularly suitable for the slightly cooler days in the transition period. The high proportion of spandex ensures a comfortable fit, and the robust outer fabric does not form pods even with regular friction thanks to protectors. On sunny days there is no accumulation of moisture and the skin stays comfortably dry. Great.

MOTORRAD verdict: Good

Modeka Tech Dry (autumn)

Functional underwear in the test

Providers: www.modeka.de
Price: Shirt: 39.99 euros, pants: 36.90 euros
Sizes: Unisex S – 4XL
Material: 54% polyamide, 40% soft polypropylene, 6% elastane

Positive: soft and quick drying material; very well processed seams; very good fit, stays in shape even after multiple washes; good evacuation of sweat, good heat regulation; wide waistband prevents a drafty neck area; no annoying seams

Negative: different size ratio between shirt and pants

Conclusion: With unisex functional underwear, the fit is almost always a problem. Be sure to try on before buying. Otherwise, the functional underwear from Modeka impresses with its soft material, very good workmanship and excellent heat regulation. The fair price-performance ratio makes them a perfect basis for the transition period.

MOTORRAD verdict: very good

Functional underwear for winter

At temperatures below ten degrees, winter underwear only has one important function: heating up. The Dainese D-Core Thermo-Set clearly has the edge here. In addition to the thick chemical fiber mix, the 3-D frame armor brings a decent heat cushion under the suit, and the very tight fit and soft cuffs prevent uncomfortable pulling on the neck and arms. The most expensive laundry in the test shows that it is worth the money, especially in icy temperatures. The situation is different with the competition from Touratech. The Primero Alpine underwear was the only test participant to pull the first threads after the first wash. It’s a shame, because that leads to a significant devaluation in the processing area. The materials themselves are high quality and provide reliable warmth in cooler temperatures. The stand-up collar with zipper forms a windproof finish at the neck, and the softshell construction ensures a comfortable fit. Nevertheless, Touratech’s underwear comes in last due to its unbalanced price-performance ratio and the lack of workmanship.

Overall, however, our subjects are close to each other. Some of the products only differ in details and the bottom line is that they leave a positive overall impression.

Touratech Primero Alpine (winter)

Functional underwear in the test

Touratech Primero Alpine: MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory.

Providers: www.touratech.de
Price: Shirt: 49.90 euros, pants: 34.90 euros
Sizes: S-L
Material: Polypropylene 80%, polyamide 20%

Positive: pleasantly soft material; warming lining; soft finish without annoying seams; well insulated thanks to the softshell construction; antistatic properties; good moisture transport; close-fitting stand-up collar prevents unpleasant drafts

Negative: threads come loose after the first wash; relatively long legs; Price-performance ratio is not right

Conclusion: As a second, warming layer, Touratech’s Primero Alpine functional underwear is only partially convincing. It heats you up properly in colder temperatures, but more and more threads loosen with each wash. It’s a shame, because thanks to its fit, heat regulation and comfort, it would be a solid companion in colder temperatures.

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfying

Dainese D-Core Thermo (winter)

Functional underwear in the test

Providers: www.dainese.de
Price: Shirt: 69.95 euros, pants: 59 euros
Sizes: XS-XL
Material: 10% polyamide, 5% elastane, 85% dryarn

Positive: additional thermal comfort through the 3-D frame armor; also suitable for temperatures well below zero; tight-fitting cuffs prevent cold drafts at the neck and leg ends; high wearing comfort thanks to seamless processing;
hypoallergenic mixed fabric lies comfortably on the skin

Negative: very tight fit – try on beforehand

Conclusion: The functional underwear from Dainese is by far the most expensive in our test, but it is worth putting in your wallet. An excellent choice of materials combined with a very good workmanship guarantee high wearing comfort and a balanced heat balance even at the lowest temperatures. The only negative point – the very tight fit. Dainese could do a little more.

MOTORRAD verdict: Good

Functional motorcycle underwear for the summer

Vanucci’s seamless women’s clothing is the best example of this. The cheapest laundry in the test shows its strengths, especially on hot days. The robust material fits like a glove even after several washes and makes the skin feel dry. The only drawback – the tank top cannot properly absorb the sweat in the armpit area. Going for the long-sleeved version from Louis is definitely worthwhile here. The summer underwear from Rukka also really turned up in the practical test.
The heat-regulating mix of materials cuts a fine figure even after 50 hours of use. In addition, the set does not warp even after eight visits in the washing machine and shows no signs of wear and tear. We are excited.

Vanucci Seamless Women (Summer)

Negative: Tanktop cannot properly absorb armpit sweat; Long-sleeved shirt would be more suitable on hot days

Conclusion: The Vanucci functional underwear is the cheapest in our test field and still scores top marks in all areas. The comfortable fit and the robust material are positive in the practical test. The long-sleeved shirt is recommended for the summer, as this is the best way to regulate the heat balance and to reliably wick away sweat.

MOTORRAD verdict: very good

MOTORCYCLE conclusion

Quality does not always depend on price – our practical test shows that very clearly. If you are on the road all year round, you would rather access it two or three times. Because good underwear for the right time of year can be found quickly for less than 100 euros and has many advantages. No material can cool comfortably in summer and warm on fresh days. But in the individual disciplines, almost all washes are top. If you can’t do without your beloved motorcycle even in icy temperatures, you should also think about an extra warm set for the winter. When the second skin still fits perfectly, nothing can make you sweat – or even shiver – so quickly.

This is how MOTORRAD tests

Functional underwear in the test

Our test crew is used to scrubbing kilometers. Accordingly, our test samples went to the collar. In total, the underwear sets spent almost 150 hours on the motorcycle and covered a whopping 12,000 kilometers. But that was not all: In order to be able to better assess the actual wear and tear, the sets were washed and dried a total of 24 times in compliance with the respective care instructions.

Practical test: sports bras under 50 euros

Good functional underwear is especially important on longer tours. But if women motorcyclists include a badly seated one
Bra pinches and pinches, unfortunately women are left behind when it comes to the feel-good factor. For larger cup sizes, it is difficult to find a bra that fits well, follows every movement and reliably transports sweat away. In order to get the most representative result possible, MOTORRAD / in tested four models for medium support in size 75C – the German average size.

High-quality materials ensure a comfortable fit, and the adjustable straps can be combined with an extra fastener to form the ringer’s back. That provides extra hold. And the hangers? You hardly feel it even under constant load. The moisture-regulating zones transport sweat immediately outside. Although he also leads the price list at 44.95 euros, quality unfortunately also costs.

MOTORRAD verdict: very good

Providers: www.puma.de
Price: 30.00 Euro (RRP)

MOTORRAD verdict: Good

HKMX The All Star Sports Bra, Level 2

Functional underwear in the test

Providers: www.hunkemoller.de
Price: 29.99 euros (RRP)

Positive: pre-shaped cups hold without being too tight; very soft and comfortable material; good cut; good removal of sweat, the thin padding ensures a nice shape; Reduction in chest movement

Negative: Difficult to put on because of the porters; after long periods of wear, strong pressure can be felt on the neck; Chest band slides down slightly after long periods of wear

Conclusion: Visually, the sports bra from the Dutch underwear manufacturer Hunkemoller is a real eye-catcher. The price is also fair. However, it shows weaknesses in the everyday test. Biggest drawback? The crossed straps make it difficult to put on and take off. The pressure point in the neck is also annoying on longer journeys. The pre-shaped and thinly lined cups create a nice shape and reduce breast movement.

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfying
