Admittedly: The addition “standard” is missing in the introductory words; because as early as the mid-1990s there was liquid Harley-Davidson for thermally healthy twin conditions. However, only for racing machines that are freely available to a limited extent. The VR 1000 built for the US Superbike Championship in 1994 anticipated what was to establish a completely new series from model year 2002 under the perfectly fitting name “Revolution Engine”: water cooling, overhead camshafts, four-valve cylinder heads and 60 instead of the 45 degree cylinder angle maintained since 1909.

The outcry of the Harley disciples was limited. On the one hand, because the beloved air-cooled ones stayed in the program. On the other hand, because the high-torque and extremely cultivated V-Rod engine gave the brand a cross-model image that silenced all Harleys-are-lame-iron heaps: in 3.6 seconds from 0 to 100 km / h, in about 14 seconds at 200 km / h and then still a long way from the end – any questions? From the start, Harley made no secret of the fact that the V-Rod would only be the first of other models in a new series. Four sisters were to follow. And with very different degrees of success. The most active V-Rod derivative, of all things, flopped: The Street Rod was only sold for 436 people in Germany – its unmotivated shape was just too daunting. The first edition of the Night Rod, which is particularly popular with slightly shorter people because of its centrally mounted footrests, brought it to 919 copies in this country in its short construction time. The Night Rod Special is more successful – and the most sought-after as a used one – with a good 1500 pieces so far. The pure V-Rod has even impressed 3,600 German Harley revolutionaries so far.

Absolutely stable mechanics, a little more maintenance-intensive trappings – this is how the long-term quality of the V-Rod models can be summarized. Especially the first two years of construction, with their high proportion of only partially protected aluminum surfaces, require a very sensitive, caring hand. It was not for nothing that Harley-Davidson communicated separate care tips for these darlings. A look at the disc wheels usually reveals immediately how exactly the previous owner took it. And where the gaze is already directed downwards: Which tires are fitted? Not an unimportant question, because some Harleys still have the frighteningly long-lasting, but not really convincing Dunlop first tires. If so, the price is easier to negotiate. Much better: Metzeler ME 88. The most popular V-Rod conversions: until 2007 a 240 mm rear wheel including a rear wheel conversion (does not justify an extra charge – on the contrary); Mini turn signals (mostly Kellermann); Exhaust (Slip-on from Remus or Sebring, brings around 500 euros extra; Kess-Tech up to 1000 euros); Handlebars (especially with the Night Rod Special). Self-indulgent with such conversions: check papers; Of course, this also applies to the original service booklet.
Market situation
The popularity hit parade is clear: The most popular used machine is clearly the Night Rod Special, on par with the V-Rod Muscle, of which only a few are on the market. Untampered (important!) Originals of the first two model years rank directly behind. The clean aluminum look has meanwhile made these models popular collector’s items. The V-Rod intermediate phase (2004 to 2006) is at best the same price, but mostly even a bit cheaper. Since 2007, the V-Rod has been rolling on a 240 mm rear wheel from the factory, which is quite important for potential customers and makes the V-Rod much more popular (and of course more expensive) when used. ABS, which is optional from 2008, is rewarded with an extra charge of 500 to 1000 euros for used vehicles. The Street Rod and the standard version of the Night Rod are at the lower end of the popularity scale and can usually only be sold based on the price – which is still quite official for used conditions.
