It seems important to Honda to reduce the size of the indicators in the fairing and thus to be able to design them more freely. The indicators could also be located in air ducts for intake or cooling.

Honda turns the blinker into a winglet?
Plans to use turn signals as tail units

Honda has patented an invention that uses modern rod-shaped LED indicators to direct air in order to improve aerodynamics.

LED indicators from the accessories are now smaller than a penny and can sometimes be used in the rear as a reverse-brake-indicator combination. And in series production? LED: yes. Klein: No. Despite modern LED technology, the turn signal housings are as big and beautiful as they were 30 years ago in some disguises. Now Honda has patented an invention that should make it possible to use stick-shaped indicators that also serve as air ducts. Flashing winglets of a new Fireblade?

Honda aero turn signals

Honda’s patent specification shows how the front and rear indicators of a fully faired motorcycle can be designed so that they can be placed in air ducts without requiring additional structural width. Or simply for design reasons. The technology commonly used today of placing indicators in fairing mirrors could thus become obsolete. Nevertheless, Honda does not rule out its use there either. The wind would then flow past the glass. Honda is also assuming the use of rod indicators in guide channels for the rear section.

What’s the point?

Primarily, Honda would like to resolve the conflict of objectives in the design of fairings: But there has to be a turn signal somewhere. Using the small rods, the indicators could be integrated into air openings and still serve as a guide plate. Or vice versa: The original recess for the conventional indicator could be used as an additional aerodynamic element. The use of the blink channels for cooling electrical components or even electric drives is not excluded. One of the drawings suggests the use of the stick indicators in Ram Air channels.

Conclusion

The patents are always nice. Often far from reality, they allow conclusions to be drawn about what is hidden there “besides building mopeds” still running. And: small indicators have never done any harm.
