Fabian Keppler: … of course it takes getting used to. At least the first generation, until it was replaced in 2015 by the thoroughly and sensibly redesigned Versys. But these are just superficialities. Apart from that, new and used buyers appreciate the excellent travel qualities. The 1000 series scores above all with its powerful four-cylinder. This not only allows it to set itself apart from the competition, but also provides us with a good sales argument.
MOTORCYCLE: Who bought the Kawasaki Versys 1000 new, who is buying it used today.
Fabian Keppler: Most of the time it is people who switch from smaller types, for example the 650 Versys, and who have very specific requirements in terms of touring performance. They want to store their luggage properly and need a motorcycle that is easy to ride as a couple. For used buyers, the first generation now offers an excellent price-performance ratio. So much motorcycle for so little money – there is nothing comparable in the segment of large travel enduro bikes!
MOTORCYCLE: Are there competitors in your own warehouse??
Fabian Keppler: At most the Z 1000 SX, which is also a great tourer. But if you compare directly, the Kawasaki Versys 1000 offers significantly more. And the first vintages are now very, very cheap.
MOTORCYCLE: What do you have to put on at least?
Fabian Keppler: The Kawasaki Versys 1000 is particularly appreciated by frequent drivers. Interested parties should therefore look for offers with low mileage. If the equipment and maintenance are correct – keyword checkbook – you will find what you are looking for from 7,500 euros.
MOTORCYCLE: Versys drivers are crazy about modifications?
Fabian Keppler: No, most types are often equipped with factory accessories, especially the tour packages with original case sets are widespread. If so, a motor protection is screwed on or an accessory exhaust is installed. Unfortunately, the first Kawasaki Versys 1000 was missing a main stand, but SW-Motech has it for retrofitting.
MOTORCYCLE: Anomalies in your workshop …?
Fabian Keppler: … there are almost none. The engine is extremely reliable, a real endurance runner. The only stupid thing is that there are so few tire approvals. The original tires (Pirelli Scorpion Trail) wear out quickly, and touring rubber suits better the character of the Versys anyway.
