Retro with a difference. At the beginning of the new millennium, Kawasaki decides to revive the glorious Z series from the roaring seventies. But not in the form of a kitschy old school design.

Since the model was launched, it has matched the modern layout of the Z 1000: a cockpit landscape à la “Mouse cinema”. With the 2010 type, however, the digital information can be captured well.

Since 2007, the already stable and easily controllable brakes of the 1000 series have improved significantly in quality thanks to ABS and radial brake calipers.

Of course, this name can also be used to quote from the model history. The Z 1000 from 2003 takes up the double flute design of the 900 Z 1 Super Four from 1973.

An extensive update will follow in 2007. Not only do the edges look rounder, the driving experience fits despite the lack of performance.

Second-hand advice Kawasaki Z 1000 (2003 – 2014)
Aggressive, strong new edition of the classic

Do motorcycles with glorious names from yesteryear also have to look old? No, says Kawasaki and, from 2003, will send the new edition of the Kawasaki Z 1000 onto the road in a radical and modern form.

Retro with a difference. At the beginning of the new millennium, Kawasaki decides to revive the glorious Z series from the roaring seventies. But not in the form of a kitschy old school design. The reissue of the Kawasaki Z 1000 from 2003 should not only be technically but also optically modern through and through. Which is why it was not the organic teardrop shape of the seventies, but the sleek, angular design language of the 2000s that dominated the four-cylinder.

Ideologically, however, it should certainly tie in with the example of yesteryear. Just as it was important 40 years ago to impress the road not just with sheer power, but even more with cleanly cultivated power output. Which is why the first two types of Kawasaki Z 1000 (2003 and 2007) were content with comparatively moderate power (127 and 125 PS) and a comfort-oriented chassis.

Performance increase from year of construction 2010

Only the third generation of the Kawasaki Z 1000 from 2010 onwards increased significantly. The displacement increased from 953 to 1043 cubic, the power to 138 hp. But this has also changed the character of the Big Four significantly. Of course, the 1000 series is now much more spontaneous, which in addition to the increase in displacement and performance also has something to do with the changed gear ratio.

However, a lot of smoothness was sacrificed for this, which distinguished the two previous models. When it comes to the chassis, too, the Kawasaki engineers have now improved significantly. The bottom line is: less comfort, but more handiness and stability. The Kawasaki Z 1000 has gained significantly in sharpness from its third evolutionary stage.

Visit to the Kawasaki Z 1000

Two types of the 1000 series passed the MOTORRAD endurance test. The balance of the first year (2003) was consistently positive. The only drawback: the howling sixth gear, which prompted Kawasaki to install modified gear pairs from 2005 – and to offer this to owners born in 2003 and 2004 as a conversion measure. The 2010 model of the Kawasaki Z 1000 coped with the 50,000 kilometer distance with similar success: technically fit and hardly any unscheduled in the workshop.

Only the requirement to replace all brake lines and seals after 48,000 kilometers spoils the positive picture. Obsolete in practice, but workshops report, because many owners of the Kawasaki Z 1000 have long since converted to steel braided. With older models, watch out for vibration damage and hidden rust nests. The years 2006 to 2009 should be handed over with a red master key set (for coding the immobilizer for key reproductions).

Market situation Kawasaki Z 1000

A total of around 13,000 vehicles of the first three generations of the Kawasaki Z 1000 have been sold in ten years. That is a decent number, the sales portals on the Internet are correspondingly rich and the Z 1000 can also be found at dealerships. The cheapest offers for the four-in-a-row vehicle fall just below the 3,000-euro threshold. These offers are mostly for motorcycles from the first three years on which a considerable number of kilometers have already been unwound. If the maintenance history is correct, this is not a problem. More likely if some major modifications (especially at the rear) have been made.

It is questionable whether one will like this customizing in the long run. Such offers are also not conducive to a later resale. The second type (built from 2007) is available from around 4500 euros. In this case, tuning measures are usually limited to exhaust, mirrors or indicators. The third generation of the Kawasaki Z 1000 is priced at the 6,000 euro mark. The equivalent: first-hand, well-cared for!
