Tips for buying used
The Kawasaki W 800 belongs to the “eye catcher” category. A motorcycle as children would draw it. And because Kawa is now taking it out of the range, the W 800 becomes a sought-after used one.
Jorg Lohse

Actually, Ulf Penner is known differently. Always on the lookout for the last bit of horsepower, which is guaranteed to be mobilized from the depths of a combustion chamber – whether high-end big bikes, youngtimers or Nippon scooters. Performance equals bums! How will one get down to 48 hp with him? Kawasaki W 800 beat? And in fact, it almost breaks the heart of the North German tuning pope when he for Kawasaki’s in-house postil “Lime Green” with the W 800 ironing through the Swiss Ticino. But it is not the restrained performance that brings tears to Penner’s eyes. It is the fact that Kawasaki is letting the Retrotwin bless the time this year.

Currently the Kawasaki W 800 as a final edition from authorized dealers, but 2017 is the end of the old fashion line from Kawasaki Heavy Industries. Penner is particularly troubled by the loss of a component: “Did I already mention the vertical shaft? Actually a technical overkill … Nevertheless, I would give my firstborn to the Japanese engineer who came up with this idea. ”It is precisely the vertical shaft with which Kawa impressed the retro scene with the predecessor W 650 (discontinued in 2005). Green-colored nostalgics finally had to wait six long years for the vertical shaft to rotate again.
Successor not in sight
Let’s not kid ourselves: Without this technically delicate camshaft drive, the Kawasaki W 800 would be just one retro bike among many, despite its beauty. And should be measured more by the fact that the entry-level parallel twin torments its way through the rev range with great effort, annoying with vibrations, the sound remains modest and the 217 kilograms of weight do not make the whole thing any easier.
The braking performance (single disc at the front, drum at the rear) could have been much more contemporary, despite the rear-facing look. With the introduction of Euro 4, the upright shaft Kawasaki W 800 gives up again. Like the 650s – way too early. A successor is not in sight. So if you want to top off your garage in style, you should go hunting for used cars right now.
Market situation
Almost 2,300 Kawasaki W 800s have been sold in six years. Less than three percent of these are currently offered as used vehicles. None of these are really cheap!
- from 5,000 euros
Sample ad: Special Edition in black, EZ 03/2011, 13,878 km, 3rd hand, HU 04/2017, 12,000 inspection included, with Bagster tank cover and tank bag, VHB 5,500 euros (private provider from Ba-Wu)
Low price level. The Kawasaki W 800 has not yet cracked the magical 5,000 mark – officially, of course. However, skilful negotiators for bikes with a comparatively high mileage (atypical for a W 800) could knock out a price with a four in front.
- from 6,000 euros
Sample ad: Special Edition in black, EZ 07/2012, 8,600 km, 2nd hand, HU 05/2018, LSL Superbike handlebar, steel braided brake line, 6,290 euros (dealer offer from Bavaria)
Medium price level. A few kilometers, well maintained, here and there a little extra “on top”. Most of the 800s of the first three years of construction are in the price range between 6,000 and 7,000 euros. Real potential for depressing prices? Maybe a little inspection can be negotiated.
- from 7,000 euros
Sample ad: Black Edition in black, EZ 02/2016, 460 km, 1st hand, HU 02/2018, full service history, 7,150 euros (dealer offer from Saarland)
High price level. In this region there are almost exclusively dealer offers who offer the Kawa-Twin in almost brand-new condition – including warranty and factory guarantee. Demonstrators and daily permits are rare and can hardly be obtained for less than 8,000 euros.

Dealer interview with Wolfgang Schneider (Kawa authorized dealer)
Wolfgang Schneider (59). The veteran Kawasaki dealer from the sugar city of Lage (near Bielefeld) regrets that the Final Edition has heralded the end of the Kawasaki W 800.
MOTORCYCLE: I come to your shop and roll back from the yard in a well-tended used W 800. A realistic scenario?
Wolfgang Schneider: Not really. Anyone who has opted for a W 800 as a new buyer since 2011 will hardly ever give it back. In principle it is like the predecessor W 650 – the motorcycle has been sold and almost never comes back. We rarely have to trade in one. It is more of a coincidence that every now and then you can offer a used Kawasaki W 800. The one that we are currently selling comes from the first owner, who bought it from us in 2011 at the age of 73 and who has now stopped riding motorcycles for reasons of age.
MOTORCYCLE: Is that a typical profile for new buyers?
Wolfgang Schneider: No, we range from 23 to the aforementioned 73. The majority of W 800 buyers are classic returnees between 40 and 60 who, on the one hand, are into retro style, but on the other hand also appreciate technical delicacies such as the vertical shaft. With us, an above-average number of women have opted for the Kawasaki W 800.
MOTORCYCLE: Does the picture change with prospective buyers?
Wolfgang Schneider: No, it stays the same. And when we have a used machine, it doesn’t last long either. People come in, they see, they strike quickly. The exterior of the Kawasaki W 800 is simply captivating.
MOTORCYCLE: And what about the inner values?
According to our workshop experience, they are also very convincing. Most of the customer’s motorcycles are first-hand and have barely seen any kilometers. I don’t think we have had to put a new set of chains on any of them. Thanks to the easily accessible technology, maintenance costs are also kept within reasonable limits – even for the valve clearance check, which is due every 12,000 kilometers. Those interested in used should clarify via the customer service booklet whether the recall work has been completed.
MOTORCYCLE: With the Final Edition, Kawa is officially opening the retro chapter again. What does that mean for the used market?
Wolfgang Schneider: The Kawasaki W 800 is considered to be very stable in value anyway. Normally after three years the new price has halved – that is the rule of thumb. This is not the case with this 800 even after five years. And in the future it will become even more popular now.

The competition
Harley-Davidson Sportster 883 Roadster:
Dynamic not to be underestimated compared to the W 800. Very rare and relatively very expensive. Two-cylinder V-engine, 53 PS, weight 266 kg, 0-100 km / h 6.4 seconds, Vmax 170 km / h, consumption 4.8 liters, ABS, from 7,000 euros *
Honda CB 1100:
Classic line plus big bike oomph. The row four for a relaxed ride on the torque wave. Four-cylinder in-line engine, 90 hp, weight 249 kg, 0-100 km / h 3.9 seconds, Vmax 180 km / h, consumption 4.5 liters, ABS, from 6,000 euros *
Moto Guzzi V7 Classic:
Scores with authenticity and a unique sound. The start of the 750 V2 is quite cautious, however. Two-cylinder V-engine, 48 hp, weight 210 kg, 0-100 km / h 6.0 sec, Vmax 155 km / h, consumption 4.5 liters, from 5,000 euros *

A retro bike couldn’t be more traditionally British? Actually yes, even if the Bonnie is now being assembled in Thailand … two-cylinder in-line engine, 68 hp, weight 227 kg, 0–100 km / h 4.5 seconds, Vmax 200 km / h, consumption 4.4 liters, from 5,500 euros *
