The Hammer S held up bravely in the MOTORRAD endurance test over 50,000 kilometers. All major quirks (gearbox, regulator) were history from model year 2011.

Tips for buying a used cruiser

It’s supposed to be something large-volume from the States, but isn’t a Harley too ordinary? No problem: the Victory Hammer can help. Tips and tricks for buying a used cruiser.

Klaus Herder

11/10/2016

You probably don’t know exactly what you were up to on July 4th, 1998. That distinguishes you from some men who were then employed by the US snowmobile and ATV manufacturer Polaris; because they are guaranteed to remember the said Saturday: the first Victory rolled out of the assembly shop in Spirit Lake, Iowa. Victory has been officially represented in Germany since September 2009, and from 73 nationwide registrations for the 2010 model year, the Americans were able to increase to 449 units in 2015. The North Americans didn’t even try to build the better Harleys. Right from the start, they went their own way with a sophisticated modular system. The basis is the completely self-developed, 106 cubic inch (1,731 cm³) “Freedom Engine”. Unlike Harley, Victory uses an ohc valve train with four valves per cylinder. The V2, which is only moderately long-stroke and therefore very easy to turn, drives all Victorys, including the bestseller from the manufacturer Victory Hammer.

As the S version, it differs from the basic model, which was initially 1,000 euros cheaper, thanks to its two-tone paintwork and more delicate and lighter forged cast wheels. In terms of driving dynamics, however, one hammer is the same as the other: powerful acceleration from the lower engine speed, casual surfing on a lush torque wave that practically never provides less than 100 Nm. This is joined by a chassis that is surprisingly stable for cruiser standards and at the same time sufficiently comfortable. Some electrical fips (regulator!), The often laborious search for the idle and certain weaknesses in the processing quality (including corrosion on screws and mufflers) were considered teething troubles. However, the Polaris team reacted immediately, and from model year 2011 the main deficiencies objected to in the MOTORRAD endurance test were history. Good for new buyers, even better for those interested in second-hand purchases: You can hardly go wrong with the Victory Hammer, not just in terms of reliability.

Market situation

Victory Hammer in used advice

Example: Hammer S, EZ 6/2013, 6,758 km, 13,689 EUR; Offer from a multi-brand dealer in Ba-Wu.

Over 60 hits on the relevant Internet exchanges. Sign of a lavish Hammer second hand offer? Done, two thirds of them are demonstrators and new vehicles.

  • from 10,000 euros

Sample ad: Victory Hammer S, 59,000 km, EZ 10/2012, HU 3/2017, 3rd hand, full service history, red and white, Miller exhaust, LED indicators, black foiled front fender, original parts and windshield available, 9,950 euros ( Private offer from Schleswig-Holstein)

Low price level. Very high mileage for Victory conditions, therefore close to the absolute lower limit of the price. But even one to two thousand euros above that is thin on offer, and bargains don’t even end up online.

  • from 12,500 euros

Sample ad: Victory Hammer 8 Ball, 11,765 km, EZ 3/2011, HU 6/2017, 2nd hand, full service history, black, 105 PS / 184 Nm, original USA exhaust, K&N air filter, new tires, small indicators, license plate on the side, pre-extended. Footrests, Arlen-Ness mirrors, bandit seat, custom clutch lever, etc., 12,990 euros (dealer offer from Brandenburg)

Medium price level. Moderately difficult conversions (10,000 to 15,000 km) and a few 8 ball demonstrators cavort in this category, which is also rather weak.

  • from 15,000 euros

Sample ad: Victory Hammer S, 24,600 km, EZ 3/2011, HU 5/2018, 2nd hand, full service history, white-red, Jekyll & Hyde exhaust with radio remote control, side license plate holder from Genscher V2, Kellermann indicators, shortened rear area, lowering of the rear, many other modifications and extras, as good as new, 15,500 euros (private offer from Hesse)

High price level. From 15 Mille, the selection becomes significantly larger. Here demonstrators and (almost) new vehicles compete against very complex (radical) conversions.

Dealer interview with Dennis Rattinger

Dennis Rattinger (37), sales advisor and victory expert at the Lower Saxony multi-brand authorized dealer Scholly’s (www.scholly.de).

MOTORCYCLE: How long have you been doing Victory??

Dennis Rattinger: We have been there since the beginning, i.e. since the end of 2009, and not only sell new and used machines, but also do a lot of conversions. A customer has just brought me his hammer, which we are supposed to convert to a 300 rear wheel.

MOTORCYCLE: What does your Victory clientele look like??

Dennis Rattinger: Totally mixed, from young to old. I have a few classic cowl wearers from the MC scene, but also older people who drive tourers. Typically also men between 40 and 50 who want to finally fulfill their motorcycle dream as a newcomer or returnee. From 25 to 60 years, everything is included.

MOTORCYCLE: Why are your customers interested in Victory and not Harley-Davidson?

Dennis Rattinger: I keep hearing customers say “Harley used to be something special, but it’s not anymore”. But that’s exactly what customers want: something special. But we can’t get the really die-hard Harley riders off the brand – unless the dealer messed it up …

MOTORCYCLE: Which model is your Victory bestseller??

Dennis Rattinger: That was clearly the hammer so far, but it was overtaken by the Gunner this year. The main reason is probably the appearance, which is not necessarily due to the lower price and the ABS.

MOTORCYCLE: Does ABS play a role at all??

Dennis Rattinger: Our Victory customers don’t really care. They say “I haven’t needed that for years, what should I do with it now ?! I’m cruising, I don’t go racing with a racer! ”And the Hammer customers don’t care at all. They come into the store and just want the thickest and biggest. They want pressure, and they don’t really care whether the thing is well in the curve.

MOTORCYCLE: The most popular conversions are some?

Dennis Rattinger: License plate and exhaust. I modify the exhaust nine times on ten new vehicles. And eight of them are Jekyll & Hyde, because it’s the coolest thing you can buy when it comes to sound. And the ninth exhaust is then a Miller. Meanwhile, Victory customers are also loosening up when it comes to renovation costs. At first, the price was closely monitored, but now it’s almost like Harley’s: Come on, the main thing is cool!

MOTORCYCLE: And what do you drive privately?

Dennis Rattinger: I can’t really tell you: Buell.

The competition

Ducati Diavel:

Devilishly strong and fast muscle bike with the somewhat tamed V2 from the 1,198. Amazingly suitable for bends.
Two-cylinder V-engine, 1198 cm³, 162 PS, 240 kg, 0-100 km / h in 3.0 seconds, Vmax 255 km / h, consumption 5.9 liters, ABS, from 9,800 euros *

Harley-Davidson Night Rod Special:

Potent representative of the Harley parallel world with water-cooled four-valve V2 and – sacrilege – 60 degree cylinder angle.
Two-cylinder V-engine, 1,247 cm³, 122 PS, 302 kg, 0-100 km / h in 3.6 seconds, Vmax 225 km / h, consumption 5.8 liters, ABS, from 12,500 euros *

Suzuki M 1800 R:

Overweight, ABS-free balancing hums with harsh load change reactions and angry brakes. Only something for experts.

Almost a sporty alternative to the V2 monotony for cruiser conditions. Seven hundredweights that are fun even in curves.

literature

Victory literature in German is still in short supply, and things are not looking much better in the USA either. The 96-page paperback “The Victory Motorcycle – Making of a New American V-Twin” from 1998 tells the story of the company’s founding and that of the first models. Downside: Only antiquarian products are available and then mostly mercilessly overpriced.
