The retrofit kits from LightMode are mainly suitable for two target groups: On the one hand, motorcyclists who have always wanted to change the look of their helmets have the option of installing colored stripes that can also shine. However, the lighting solutions are primarily aimed at motorcyclists who want to improve their visibility – especially at night and in rather cloudy weather. Lightmode offers different style variants.
Neutron, Electron and Proton
Overall, buyers can choose between the three variants Neutron, Electron and Proton. The way it works is simple. The sets are attached to the helmet with adhesive strips or the supplied liquid adhesive. The easiest way to install is the neutron variant, which uses the adhesive tape method. A liquid adhesive is not required. The strips can be stuck to the helmet like a sticker. Buyers can choose between various colors. The manufacturer of the light kits shows on its website how the kits can also be combined with one another.

The installation of the two sets Electron and Proton is a bit more complex. Both sets come with thin wires that are temporarily attached to the helmet with glue sticks. When it comes to design, buyers have a free hand and plenty of room for creativity. After the wires have been positioned as they should be attached to the helmet at the end, the wire can be glued on using a liquid adhesive. In order to prevent sticky glue residues, another liquid is included, which can be applied relatively quickly to the same place. A small box, which also has to be attached to the helmet and is installed similar to an action cam, provides electricity. The wires are then connected to the small box, which, by the way, can also light up. Charging takes place via a USB connection. The battery that provides the power supply should last six or seven hours, depending on the lighting variant. The operating time can be increased to eleven or twelve hours if you opt for the “flashing” mode. According to the manufacturer, the system is waterproof. In addition, LightMode explains at the Manufacturer website in detail in the form of videos, how the installation should be as uncomplicated as possible.

Prices for the Neutron sets start at $ 129. The electron kits start at $ 149. The Proton variant costs at least $ 169. Incidentally, shipping is from the USA. Incidentally, the helmet sets from LightMode are not completely new. A crowdfunding campaign was successfully completed as early as 2014, which helped with the market launch. Finally, the question arises as to what the legal situation is like in Germany. Is it even allowed to use such a glowing helmet in traffic? We asked KBA about this and have now received an answer: “The statement that approved helmets may not be changed afterwards, as this change leads to the expiry of the validity of the approval mark affixed to the helmet, is correct.” In this respect, German motorcyclists have to do without the retrofit kits from LightMode for better or worse.
