Sports touring riders like the BMW R 1200 RS can handle sporty soles just like the dresser touring rubber. So the best basis for comparison.

House track and house tires. At the Michelin test area in Fontange in the south of France, we conclude the third part of our tire test with a classic family three-way battle.

Pilot Power 2CT, Road 5 and Power RS

For many years, the Michelin Pilot Power 2CT has been a loyal companion and a good choice when it comes to everyday performance. New tires came and went, but the 2CT stayed in the program. How good are his followers? Our test shows it.

the Michelin Pilot Power 2CT has inspired us since its appearance in 2006 as a formidable everyday sports tire. And we continue to stand by that. The MOTORRAD test results of the past are of course still valid. If we attested the 2CT “very good wet driving characteristics and perfect country road performance” at its last big appearance in 2010, we are not questioning that in 2018 – why should we? However, we have always asked ourselves the question – how much better have his youngest grandchildren become, whose tread continues to be made up of the 2CT rubber compound celebrating its premiere at Power, based on the two-component principle: softer, strong shoulders, paired with one more wear-resistant median.

Wait, this small addition should not be ignored: 2CT has meanwhile developed into 2CT +: The soft shoulders are now somewhat underpinned by the harder mixture, which, according to the developers, wants to achieve more stability. Michelin has always emphasized the high silica content in the rubber compound. This special form of a silica compound ideally ensures that the tires remain supple even in the rain and can interlock with the asphalt. The silica principle was first used in series production in the Pilot Sport in 1999 and was therefore launched long before the Michelin Pilot Power 2CT. But to this day, silica is one of the style-defining ingredients in many Michelin tires, which is why our tests still rank them among the best on wet roads.

The candidates

Michelin Pilot Power 2CT: The grandfather of sporty road rubbers from Michelin. In 2004 the Pilot Power appeared, still without a two-component mix, and in 2006 the 2CT version tested here. The two original powers are still part of the official program today. In 2009 the Power 2CT won the MOTORRAD tire test for the last time.

Michelin Road 5: The latest addition to the French touring segment has only been on the market this year. The Power 2CT combines the similarly structured silica mixture and the 2CT structure, albeit in a plus version at the back with harder padded shoulders. Took first place in the wet touring tire test in 2018.

Michelin Power RS: After Power Pure and Power 3, the youngest successor to the Power family now goes by the abbreviation RS. That sounds like racing and it is. In the 2017 test debut, the RS moved up to first place in the Racetrack ranking and was awarded the “Racetrack” purchase tip. The 2CT was always left behind in the test.

Michelin Power 2CT versus Michelin Road 5

One could basically assume that the fifth edition of the touring series called “Road” within the Michelin family of country road tires is par excellence. In fact, the rubber, which has only been available since this year, pleases with its balance, scores with feedback in terms of adhesive reserves and its cold-running properties. However, the Michelin Pilot Power 2CT is much more agile on the same route, which is clearly beneficial to sportier pilots even on all-round bikes. The picture remains the same in wet conditions: similar grip level, but with easier turning, the Power 2CT sets itself apart minimally even in rain.

Michelin Power 2CT versus Michelin Power RS

First of all, the old Michelin Pilot Power 2CT wins the home track race. The Michelin Power RS does not come close to its agility for a long time.

MOTORCYCLE

0.15 seconds separate the Pilot Power 2CT from the latest successor Power RS in the wet test. This is nothing.

The pilot first has to get used to a slight indolence that almost leads to a kind of “inactivity”. Only when we drastically increase the speed and pace, take the famous knife between our teeth, does the Michelin Power RS show its strengths. And that’s called stability!

Then the Michelin Pilot Power 2CT has to step back significantly. This can be felt even more clearly on the racetrack. In the rain, the 2CT drives more smoothly, but the grip strength of the Michelin Power RS is phenomenal, especially when accelerating.

Conclusion – after 12 years still at the top level

If we were to choose the winner on the basis of a price-performance rating, he would clearly be called Michelin Pilot Power 2CT. That he is still at top level after twelve long years – that is a really mature achievement. Nevertheless, there are also reasons to reach out to the young grandchildren. Especially when it comes to high-performance athletes: The noticeably more stable Michelin Power RS has the better arguments.
