“The monkey is so low that you won’t fall far if you fall off.”, so one of the arguments of the organizer for the small Honda bike.

Mechanically simple, you can repair them yourself or have them repaired almost anywhere. Obtaining spare parts isn’t too complicated either.

Monkey Run Peru by The Adventurist

The British tour operator The Adventurist praises its Monkey Run Peru as a “serious adventure on a not-so-serious bike”, which lasts a good week and costs around 1,440 euros.

The adventure leads through some of the most remote areas of Peru: The starting point is Atalaya in the Amazon region and after a week it ends Monkey Run Peru in the Andes in Ayacucho. The route leads through humid, pristine and rarely visited parts of the rainforest in the Amazon region.

There is no fixed route, because according to the organizer, part of the concept of the Monkey Run Peru is that the participants get lost and deviate from the beaten path. A good road map is part of the “monkey run”.

It’s too low to fall deep

And why the Honda Monkey? A spokesman for the organizer put it as follows:
“Monkey bikes are not only great fun, but also hard to take a serious fall with them. Because they’re low to the ground, riding them feels faster than it actually is, and the speed is just right for enjoying the scenery. In addition, the bikes will eventually go on their knees, which means that the participants will be forced to deal with the locals and find out more about the country and its culture. “

However, we find the list in the program description a lot funnier:

  • “It’s too low to fall deep.
  • “It’s about the size of a roller skate and fits through tiny gaps in traffic.
  • “It’s incredibly easy. Should it inevitably break, it is easy to carry.
  • “It is mechanically constructed in a simple way so that a chimpanzee could repair it.

Participation in the Monkey Run Peru costs around 1,440 euros, which mainly includes the entry fee and bike rental.

The inspiration for this was the Monkey Run, which the British organizer carried out in the Sahara in 2016, during which the participants were dropped off in the desert with the task of crossing the Atlas Mountains with 50 cm³ Monkeys and reaching the Moroccan coast. The mixture of thrill, fun and good food was so well received that the Monkey Run Peru was designed and included in the event program.

The participants have about a week to get from Atalaya to Ayacucho. In the time between start and finish, you are on your own.

It costs 1,295 pounds to participate, which equates to around 1,440 euros. The price includes both the Honda Monkey and the closing party. The key data of the bike for the Monkey Run Peru: 90 cm³ four-stroke engine, 5.1 HP, 72 kilos, front disc brakes, rear drum brake.

Accommodation, food and petrol come on top, although according to the organizers in Peru everything is easy to find and abundant – in cities there are hotels, in villages at least guest rooms and whoever gets stranded between two places can still camp. Don’t forget: the flight is also not included in the price.
