MotoE World Championship 2019
Start list for the MotoE World Championship 2019

The electric world championship “MotoE”, which will take place from 2019 as part of selected MotoGP events, is taking on its final form. A look at the concept and the team / driver structures shows that things are being done right.

Although the inclined motorsport fan can still not get much from the e-madness of the last few years, the concept presented by Dorna and FIM for the MotoE World Championship in the coming year is all about prestige. This also shows that the renowned Grand Prix teams are involved in this series. The starting list for the coming season was published today and it brings some surprises with it. Above all, however, it is the chance for some pilots to draw attention to themselves.

Some familiar faces there

With Nicolas Terol and Mike di Meglio there are two former 125cc world champions. In addition to MotoE, Di Meglio is still under contract in the endurance world championship, from where he will meet some colleagues: Josh Hook, Randy de Puniet, Niccolo Canepa and Kenny Foray. The endurancers are “lucky” because there are no overlapping dates. Hook, Foray and Canepa were long-distance world champions. De Puniet has won 24-hour races, has five Grand Prix victories and was on the podium twice in MotoGP.

Bradley Smith will compete in MotoE next season.

As an “old warrior”, Sete Gibernau, two-time MotoGP runner-up, throws himself into the fray. Alex de Angelis is also one of the experienced pilots in the field – although racing on electric motorcycles should be new for both of them.

Maria Herrera brings the women’s quota into MotoE, and Xavier Simeon has also found a place. From a German-speaking perspective, the Swiss Jesko Raffin is set. British rider Bradley Smith, who will be contesting his last MotoGP race at KTM this weekend, is also going to MotoE.

Calendar: Five races

The MotoE will be held as part of the MotoGP World Championship and will initially be part of five events in 2019. The kick-off will take place in Jerez on May 5th, which is also the European kick-off for the motorcycle world championship. Two weeks later, the electric cars are also at Le Mans in France.

Energica moto-e

The energica ego is used for driving.

A break of over a month follows, then MotoE will make a guest appearance at the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring and a few weeks later at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. The finale will take place on the weekend of September 15 in Misano, where two races will be held.

There have already been some attempts to establish electric racing, for example at the Isle of Man TT with the Zero-TT, or as part of the endurance world championship. The German Matthias Himmelmann once emerged as world champion, Katja Poensgen and Udo Reichmann also achieved podiums and World Cup victories. However, back then there were seldom more than five motorcycles at the start.

With this new concept – you can argue or discuss as you like about the meaningfulness – everything is on a solid footing for the first time.
