Torrential rain including the interruption of the race, an enormous number of failures and a beaming debut winner from Australia: the MotoGP race in Assen had a lot to offer. Ducati rider Andrea Dovizioso secured pole position on Saturday in difficult weather conditions, followed by Valentino Rossi. Third place went to Scott Redding, who was a bit surprising and coped with the extreme conditions the whole weekend. Marc Márquez finished 4th in qualifying, Jorge Lorenzo started 11th..
The race management declared the race in Assen to be a rain race even before the start – so all drivers started the race with the rain setup. Scott Redding got the best start, turning first into turn one. Rossi also passed Dovizioso before the first corner. Redding came out way too far in the 1st corner and lost a few places, so that Rossi led the race after the 1st corner. Behind them, Lorenzo was able to make up a few places after the start and, after a few corners, placed himself in 5th place. The intermediate result after the first of 26 laps: Rossi ahead of Dovizioso, Aleix Espargaro, Hernandez, Márquez, Pedrosa and Lorenzo.
Iannone plows through the field
Iannone, who had to start the race from the very back due to a penalty transfer, celebrated a terrific first lap in Assen and found himself in 11th place at the first start-finish crossing. At the very front, Yonny Hernandez initially coped best with the wet conditions. After the 2nd round, the Colombian placed himself in 2nd place. At the beginning of the third lap, Hernandez even passed Rossi and led the field for a few laps. But after 10 laps he got off the track and landed in the gravel bed – at this point the rain was getting heavier. Dovizioso took over the top position in front of Rossi and Petrucci, Hernandez at least saved himself in the pits to change bikes.
Iannone, who had fought his way up to 5th place, fell 13 laps before the end. Meanwhile, Scott Redding, who was in 4th position, continued to catch up with the top trio. Petrucci grabbed Rossi, who could be seen to be a more cautious driving style. Redding was also able to bypass Rossi. The rain was getting heavier. After 15 of 26 laps, the race management interrupted the race.
Many falls after the restart
After a break of almost 30 minutes, the race was resumed. Since Dovizioso had led the field before the interruption, the Italian was allowed to take 1st place on the starting grid. Petrucci, Rossi, Redding, Márquez, Pedrosa, Crutchlow and Miller started behind. Stefan Bradl started the race again from position 11. Lorenzo, who couldn’t cope with the conditions at all, fell back to a disappointing 19th place.
Many of the riders had some problems staying on their bikes after the restart. Dani Pedrosa, who fell shortly after the start, was the first driver. At first it went better for Dovizioso, who was able to claim 1st place ahead of Rossi. Márquez and Miller also got off to a great restart and improved to position 4 and 5. Right at the front, Rossi grabbed the top position. Cal Crutchlow fell in the first lap after the restart. Shortly afterwards, Danilo Petrucci had to give up the race due to technical problems. On the same lap, Andrea Dovizioso got hit, slipped off the track and was eliminated from the race.
Clear path for Rossi?
So after the failure of Dovizioso, free path for Rossi? Theoritsch did – but one lap later the Italian old master also said goodbye to the track and was eliminated. The new leader? Marc Márquez, followed by the Australian youngster Jack Miller, Pol Espargaro and Scott Redding. With 9 laps to go, Miller took the lead from Marquez and never gave it up. The 1st MotoGP victory of the Australian with starting number 43 was wrapped up.
Behind them, Scott Redding and Pol Espargaro fought an exciting battle for last place on the podium. In the end, Redding won the duel and secured 3rd place. Andrea Iannone landed in 5th place, who was allowed to start again despite his crash at the restart. With second place, Marc Márquez further extends his lead in the overall standings.
Bradl without a team next season?
Aprilia driver Stefan Bradl landed in a strong 8th place in the rain chaos in Assen. The only German MotoGP rider at the moment could not be really happy, however, as Aprilia will not take the option to continue working in the coming season. Bradl’s teammate will also not get a cockpit at Aprilia in the coming season. The Spaniard will join the Aspar team in 2017.
In addition to the long-term change of Sam Lowes, Aprilia has also introduced the second driver for the coming season: Aleix Espargaro, who is currently racing for Suzuki, will be given a cockpit for the Aprilia factory team in the 2017 season. Whether Stefan Bradl will start in MotoGP next year is therefore rather unlikely, since most of the cockpits are already taken. A move to the Superbike World Championship was described by Stefan Bradl as a possible option.
