Valentino Rossi had already secured pole position on Saturday for the start on Sunday. The ideal starting position for the Italian at his home race in Mugello. Rossi’s future team-mate Maverick Viñales started the race from second starting position. The first row of the grid was completed by Ducati driver Andrea Iannone, who will be driving for Suzuki from 2017. Marc Márquez and world champion Jorge Lorenzo had to be content with the second row of the grid.

Jorge Lorenzo had the best start in Mugello, who was able to push past Rossi in the first corner and took the lead. Further back in the field, there was a collision in the first corner. For Jack Miller, Loris Baz and Alvaro Bautista, the race was already over. While Suzuki driver Aleix Espargaro moved up from 6th to 3rd after the start, team-mate Maverick Viñales got off to a poor start and fell back to 11th. Andrea Iannone had to cope with a similarly weak start to the race, who found himself in 10th position after the first lap.

Lorenzo and Rossi fight for position 1

On the first run through the start-finish straight, Rossi first passed Lorenzo, braked himself when entering the first bend and had to let Lorenzo by again. The intermediate result after round 1: Lorenzo ahead of Rossi, Aleix Espargaro, Márquez, Pedrosa, Dovizioso and Smith. A similar picture at the end of the second lap: Rossi again prepared an attack attempt on the start-finish straight. But this time too, Lorenzo had the upper hand. Behind it, Márquez passed A. Espargaro.

After six laps the same picture. At the very front, Rossi and Lorenzo were fighting for the lead. Behind them in striking distance: Marc Márquez and Andrea Dovizioso, who was the fastest driver in the field at the time. Behind them Viñales and Iannone made up space after space. The two leading Yamahas gave each other nothing at this stage. An exciting duel between Lorenzo and Rossi was emerging. But then the shock for all Rossi fans: 15 laps before the end, the Italian local hero had to give up the race: engine failure on the number 46 Yamaha.

Marquez chases Lorenzo

So after the failure of Valentino Rossi, does Jorge Lorenzo have a clear path? Not at all! Marc Márquez had already stayed within striking distance during the duels between the two Yamahas and now set out to chase Jorge Lorenzo. Behind them, the two Ducati drivers Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone fought for last place on the podium. Anyone who had followed the previous races of the 2016 MotoGP season already knew that explosive duels were looming between the two Ducati riders.

With seven laps to go, Iannone passed Dovizioso, who did not take long and hit back one lap later. Dani Pedrosa also got closer to the Ducati duo again to intervene in the battle for the podium. Five laps before the end of the race it happened as it had to: one of the two Ducati drivers risked too much, braked too late, got too far and lost valuable positions: Andrea Dovizioso.

Photo finish decides the race

Four laps before the end of the race, Marc Márquez briefly passed Jorge Lorenzo, but Lorenzo’s counterattack was not long in coming. Behind them, Pedrosa grabbed third-placed Iannone, who countered again a few corners later and pushed himself back onto a podium. Márquez tried everything again at the front, passed Lorenzo on the start-finish straight, who hit back again in the first corner.

On the last lap, the two leaders wanted to know again: Marquez gave everything and passed Lorenzo. Lorenzo countered a few corners later and overtook Márquez, who immediately sat down in front of Lorenzo. Márquez came out of the last corner first, followed closely by Lorenzo. Head to head it went to the home stretch. Lorenzo used the speed advantage of his Yamaha and actually caught Márquez before the finish line. What a heartbeat finale!

Lorenzo extends World Championship lead, Bradl collects points

Third place went to Andrea Iannone ahead of Dani Pedrosa. Andrea Dovizioso came in fifth, ahead of Maverick Viñales and Bradley Smith. The weekend went well for Stefan Bradl, who again scored points and was able to extend his lead over teammate Alvaro Bautista in the overall standings.

With the narrow victory, Lorenzo secured 25 points for the overall standings. Márquez remains on the heels of his Spanish compatriot in the fight for the world championship and is 10 points behind after 6 of 18 races. In third place follows Valentino Rossi, who, however, is already 37 points behind his team-mate. The next race will take place on June 5th at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain.
