MotoGP 2017 in Assen, the Netherlands
Results and overall ranking

Valentino Rossi won the MotoGP race in Assen. Jonas Folger unfortunately retired. Meanwhile, Ducati rider Andrea Dovizioso has taken the lead in the overall standings.

Valentino Rossi took his first win in the 2017 MotoGP season. In difficult conditions including rain and bike changes, the Italian old champion prevailed against Danilo Petrucci and Marc Marquez at the GP in Assen. Andrea Dovizioso finished 5th with his Ducati, taking the lead in the overall standings. Maverick Vinales overturned whatever Dovizioso played in the cards. Jorge Lorenzo, on the other hand, couldn’t cope with the conditions in Assen, was overtaken by the leading duo and ended up in 15th place.

The race was similarly bitter for Johann Zarco, who started from pole position and was actually doing well until the bike change. However, the Frenchman decided to switch bikes too early – the track wasn’t wet enough yet – drove to the pits as the first driver and ended up in 14th place.

First MotoGP retirement for Jonas Folger

While Johann Zarco was still able to look forward to two World Championship points, the second Tech3 driver Jonas Folger went away empty-handed in Assen. The only German MotoGP rider fell back to the end of the field after a ride into the gravel trap on the first lap. A short time later, Folger’s race was finally over after a fall. It was Folger’s first retirement since joining MotoGP.

Things went better in Moto2 for Marcel Schrotter, who barely missed the top 10. After a strong race to catch up, Schrotter ended up in 11th place. Team colleague Sandro Cortese was eliminated. Philipp Ottl also landed on position 11 in Moto3.
