Most fans of the MotoGP video game series will probably first ask themselves one crucial question: is the new MotoGP version 2017 different from its predecessors? Yes it does. But only minimally. For example, little has changed in terms of the successful driving physics. As in the previous versions, different levels of difficulty and driving aids can be set. From beginner-friendly to fully professional, there is something for everyone. Fans can also look forward to the current licenses again. Tech-savvy players also have plenty of opportunities to tweak the setup of the bikes.

There is a first innovation in MotoGP 2017 in the game modes. In addition to the already known disciplines such as individual races, championships, careers & Co. joins the 2017 version with a manager mode that enables players to create a completely new team. Among other things, employees can be employed in various areas to bring the team forward. An online leaderboard listing the most successful team managers should provide an extra boost of motivation. Fans of the series will definitely be happy about this innovation.

Frame rate increased, enemy AI slightly improved

There are also changes in the enemy AI: although the computer-controlled opponents are still a bit too aggressive, there are significant improvements compared to the predecessor. In contrast, penalties for questionable jostling deposits are still rarely awarded, and abbreviations are usually punished consistently.

Graphically, the new version doesn’t make a quantum leap, but this year MotoGP 2017 will also be displayed on consoles with 60 frames per second. The motorcycles can also be seen in the new version. On the other hand, there is still room for improvement in other details such as the scenery or the routes. Many a fan would also be happy to receive an update for the damage and collision system. But improvement is at least in sight: next year Milestone will probably use a new graphics engine that was already used in the latest part of the MXGP series.

MotoGP 2017 – official eSports competition

There is also reason to be happy for all online players who play MotoGP 2017 on the PlayStation 4. Dorna Sports, which is responsible for the MotoGP and Superbike World Championships, has launched an official eSports competition: the “MotoGP eSport Championship”. During the MotoGP season, players should be able to compete with one another in online competitions that ultimately qualify for participation in the grand finale.

The 16 best virtual racers should be able to qualify for the season finale, which will be held in November 2017 at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia as part of the MotoGP race. The main prize to be won is a BMW M240i. For the time being, the eSports competition will only take place on PlayStation 4. The conditions of participation for the online competition are available at: www.motogpvideogame.com/esport/.

MotoGP 2017 is worth it?

One crucial question remains: is MotoGP 2017 worth it for me? MotoGP fans who attach great importance to current licenses will not be able to avoid a purchase. Newcomers who haven’t played the predecessor should definitely enjoy the new version anyway. The new manager mode could also motivate experienced players anew. Online players can also look forward to the new eSports competition.

Players who do not attach great importance to current licenses and are more interested in the virtual races are still well served by the predecessor, which started under the name “Valentino Rossi – The Game”. In the new part, however, players have to do without a rally mode and playable career highlights from Valentino Rossi, which were still there in the predecessor. MotoGP 2017 is currently available from just under 50 euros, depending on the platform.
