The most recent police crime statistics from the BKA on theft “in total of mopeds and motorcycles including unauthorized use” and attempted theft refers to the reporting period from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016. From this, we can see that a total of 23,245 thefts and attempted theft were recorded in 2016.

Most thefts in NRW

With 7,171 thefts, North Rhine-Westphalia leads the statistics. Well, with 17,865,516 inhabitants it is also the most populous federal state, but there are not most of the registered motorcycles there. In terms of the total number of registered motorcycles, Bavaria (926,882 motorcycles) is ahead of North Rhine-Westphalia (833,009). The Bavarians only reported 1,094 thefts. Converted to cases per 100,000 inhabitants, NRW comes to 40.1. The Bavarians deliver the lowest value with 8.5 thefts per 100,000 inhabitants.

Most thefts per 100,000 population

Berlin reports the most cases per 100,000 inhabitants: 60.7. With a fleet of just 105,080 motorcycles, the risk of being stolen is much higher in the capital than in Bavaria. In 2016, a total of 2,136 thefts were reported in Berlin.

The fewest thefts

There were the fewest thefts of “mopeds and motorcycles” in Saarland: the police crime statistics list 256. With 995,597 inhabitants, it is not the poorest federal state in Germany; Bremen has even fewer inhabitants with 671,489. And when it comes to the number of motorcycles and new registrations, the Saarland is not at the bottom: with 59,963 registered motorcycles, the total number is ahead of Bremen and Hamburg. In addition, there were more new registrations in Saarland in 2016 than in Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Hamburg and Bremen. The Saarlanders have 25.7 thefts per 100,000 inhabitants.
