Future in sight
While European motorcycle trade fairs are dominated by machines that will appear soon, the Japanese manufacturers allow glimpses of the distant future at the Tokyo Motor Show.

She came 21 years ago and performed with timpani, trumpets and
Acceleration records. Because they were initially only offered in the US
there was only one thing for the fans who spontaneously declined: they closed
import. And the MOTORRAD editorial team also got a copy. Despite the initial reluctance of the German importer, despite a self-limited, watered-down German 100 hp variant and although it never became a mass-produced motorcycle, it achieved the status of a legend ?? the Yamaha Vmax.
You will certainly never completely forget it, but it began in recent years
to fade her image, as it were, from the edges. Just in time, before the fading memory spreads to the motorcycle itself, Yamaha got the study
a new one Vmax presents. And this is more than a first draft; In the opinion of many observers, the Yamaha developers are more likely to have already started driving-
finished prototype at the Tokyo Motor Show.
Although details such as the seat cushion or the fitting of the headlight housing have not yet been determined, according to information from the Yamaha officials, the study should show the final shape of the motorcycle and the market launch is planned for 2008. That was it
Information, not a word, about the technology.
What can be seen and what can reasonably be guessed remains the only source of information. This serves as an orientation for the displacement and the performance of the shiny dark brown V4-
Motors the Triumph Rocket III with its 2.3-liter three-cylinder. It develops 140 hp and pushes a mighty 200 Nm of maximum torque. It can be assumed that Yamaha wants to trump these values. On the other hand, Triumph had to reduce more and more power and torque in the course of the Rocket III development because the chunk was too fast and often
produced wheelies with the rear wheel spinning. So Yamaha will probably not get along with the Vmax without some kind of slip control or power reduction in the lower gears. Hopefully the engineers will find the right way between too much in the jungle of maps
and too little, and there remains a reminiscence of the
spontaneous start of the original Vmax with its legendary V-Booster. From a certain speed it connected the carburettors of the adjacent ones-
cylinder lying on the other side, so that each suction unit was supplied with an extra portion of mixture.
Unlike the first Vmax with tubular frame, the
The backbone of the successor is a cast light metal chassis, interestingly enough it shows like the dip tubes of the conventional-
functional fork has a skin-like textured surface.
Otherwise, much of what was indissolubly one of the special features of the Vmax is retained. The tank under the seat, for example, while the airbox is hidden at the front under the tank-like cover. Or the cardan drive, which, however, has been redesigned and imposing. In terms of brakes, on the other hand, not exactly a glory of the old Vmax, the new one can show off with radially mounted six-piston calipers.
At Vmax, the future is based on motifs from the past, as is the case with the studies Yamaha Gen-Ryu, Yamaha Maxam 3000 (see also MOTORRAD 23/2005), Honda E4-01 (22/2005) and most recently the Honda DN -01 really new. It’s about the fusion of scooter and motorcycle technology. Sometimes more developed towards the scooter, sometimes more towards the motorcycle side, as with the DN-01. It carries 17-inch wheels, takes the chassis concept as well as the engine and final drive from the motorcycle sector, more precisely from the recently introduced Deauville. Supplemented by seating and operating comfort, which has so far mainly characterized luxury scooters. The low, extremely comfortable-looking driver’s seat is equipped with an adjustable backrest, and there is also a spacious seat for the passenger. In view of the low seat height, the fairing with the wide headlight strip could remain low and still promise proper wind protection.
Most of the technical innovation lies between the 680 V2 and the cardan drive: a new, hydraulic-mechanical automatic transmission, called HFT (Human Fitting Transmission) by Honda. It can be operated and driven in two fully automatic modes or as a “six-speed gearbox” with fixed gear ratios at the push of a button on the handlebars and is supposed to transmit the engine power directly and spontaneously despite continuously variable gear ratios and a torque converter. Unlike conventional automatic transmissions, which initially convert a lot of speed into little propulsion at full throttle.
A sensor rim in the front wheel of the DN-01 indicates ABS, two separate connections on the right brake calliper indicate a CBS. While one brake circuit is operated conventionally via the right hand lever, a second lever on the left end of the handlebar replaces the usual pedal for the second circuit. The fully encased exhaust system, as it were, is also very interesting
Lines up to the cooling air inlet are integrated into the overall picture. The development of the cruiser-scooter-tourer has already been completed and, according to a Honda spokesman, will be produced in series pro in the near future-
be duced. For which countries could not be found out.
The Suzuki Stratosphere takes a little longer. But what could only be suspected when this gripping study was first presented is now a certainty: the six-cylinder runs and the motorcycle drives. At the beginning of the Tokyo Motor Show, Suzuki activated a website (http://tokyo2005.suzuki.
co.jp/motor/EN/cm/index.hmtl), which not only contains a sound file with the sound of the in-line six-cylinder, but also a short video of the moving machine. 2007, so the most recent
Rumor has it that the Stratosphere will be produced. Certainly with an electrohydraulically switched gearbox and either automatic or manual clutch actuation and ABS. If
However, gimmicks such as the electrical setting of the small windshield or even the video camera installed between the headlights can be doubted. Although its purpose is an honorable one: it is supposed to extend the fun of the journey that has just ended and which has been filmed.
