Do you know the feeling of missed opportunities? Back then, this motorcycle was standing in the shop window and blinking seductively. Next to it was a price tag, which made it clear: not now! But you will not let go of the machine; you will still dream of it years later. A hopeless case? No. But on the contrary. Because your dream bike is still on the way. Somewhere in Germany. You just have to find someone to sell it to you. Four MOTORRAD editors went on a search and found their dream bike from back then. At the attractive rate of 3000 euros. And that is their story, part 1. Because the machines will continue to accompany us. Enrich the MOTORRAD fleet with immediate effect. Will go on a journey and provide material for many a technology and background story. You don’t want to miss the chance again.

Triumph Daytona T 595

MOTORRAD buys bikes for 3000 euros

Triumph Daytona T 595: built in 1997, 53,963 kilometers, three previous owners, 3100 euros.

It started with aimless surfing on ebay.co.uk. Suddenly, perfectly maintained T 595s were offered. For the equivalent of well under 3000 euros. Crazy, I thought, the most beautiful of all Daytonas costs around 4,000 euros. With a low-cost airline over to England and then back by axis? why not. The ticket was almost booked when the ad on mobile.de flickered across the screen. A golden yellow 1997 for 3300 euros, basis for negotiation. Location near Munster.

A super athlete who, despite his age, is not getting on in years.

It’s far away, but friend Guido lives around the corner. He was once a technician at Triumph. If anyone can judge the bike, it’s him. The green light is sent via SMS. Checked at Triumph at the same time using the chassis number: Great, the motorcycle was regularly at the dealer, no callbacks open, everything okay. We agree on 3100. Handshake, satisfied grins on both sides. When the T 595 disappears into the van, I see wet eyes at the seller. Don’t worry, Reinhard, we’ll take care of it!

Data
Three-cylinder in-line engine, 956 cm3, 96 kW (130 PS), weight 223 kg, payload 187 kg, tank capacity 18 liters, seat height 820 mm, top speed 255 km / h, consumption on country roads 7.5 liters / 100 km (Super)

plus
Powerful three-cylinder engine that can be driven lazily; unmistakable soundscape; well processed; great gripping, easy-to-dose brakes

minus
The seat is heated up strongly by the heat of the engine; 1997 models with little lean angle due to unfavorable manifold routing; Handlebar halves positioned very low

“A super athlete who, despite his age, is not getting on in years. That still looks fresh and fresh. A real gentleman racer. From now on I will be wearing cotton wool under the one-piece.”

Suzuki GSF 1200 Bandit

MOTORRAD buys bikes for 3000 euros

Suzuki GSF 1200 Bandit: built in 1997, 56650 kilometers, two previous owners, 2650 euros.

Finding a fat Suzuki Bandit can’t really be that difficult. But in spite of the large number of offers: if you want a second-hand car that has not been tinkered with, you have to search a long time. In any case, I was unable to get hold of a GSF 1200 Bandit in its original condition in the targeted price segment of around 3000 euros. Numerous Internet offers were terribly tinkered with Streetfighter conversions, which suggest that there was an accident involved. In the extreme south-east of Germany a bandit was finally found who had some accessories, but the series parts were available ?? a decisive purchase argument.

Previous owner Martin H. parked the bandit in his barn.

Shortly before Easter, the test drive took place between two snow showers, which did not reveal anything unusual. The machine seems to be in good technical condition. 2650 euros, 50 euros less than advertised without additional series parts, had to be on the table for the 1997 bandit. I think: a good buy.

Data
Four-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 1157 cm³, 72 kW (98 PS), weight 238 kg, payload 212 kg, tank capacity 19 liters, seat height 820 mm, top speed 218 km / h, consumption on country roads 7.3 liters / 100 km (Normal)

plus
Powerful, high-torque, smooth-running engine; neatly graduated, easily shiftable gearbox; very reliable; high payload; comfortable sitting position; easy to maintain; handy

minus
Too soft fork; high consumption; moderate paint quality

“Why the 1200 bandit? Because the engine is a stunner and experience has shown that it lasts forever. In addition, I have been fascinated by the superior performance of the Suzuki since its presentation in 1995. And now I am its godfather. class.”

Honda XRV 750 Africa Twin

MOTORRAD buys bikes for 3000 euros

Honda XRV 750 Africa Twin: built in 1995, 36,000 kilometers, two previous owners, 3400 euros.

I want a robust travel enduro. Cultivated, not too heavy, track-stable on asphalt and gravel. So an Africa Twin. Original and not tinkered with, not too high mileage, although the proven Honda V2 lasts forever. Of all the variants of the XRV, I like the RD 07 model series from the years 1993 to 1995, because only that was well equipped. All ordinary private offers are over 3,000 euros, including those with 70,000 kilometers on the clock. Ironically, a dealer offers the most beautiful in the coveted colors red / white / blue: one of the last 95s, only 96 registered. He would like to have 3699 euros.

Editor Markus Bierbricher is impressed with his purchase.

What speaks in favor of the dealer is that he looks serious and only offers top-quality used vehicles. Jonas Born from Langenfeld near Dusseldorf is selling the twin for 3400 euros. The fact that the value-stable machine is throttled to 50 hp only makes the story more interesting: This allows driving performance to be compared and dethrottling costs to be stated.

Data
Two-cylinder V-engine, 742 cm3, 44 kW (60 PS), weight 235 kg, payload 190 kg, tank capacity 23 liters, seat height 865 mm, top speed 180 km / h, consumption on country roads 6 liters / 100 km (normal)

plus
Cultivated, almost indestructible V2 engine; stiff, but comfortable chassis, handy, no pendulum swing with suitcases, track-stable on gravel; decent brakes, smooth transmission; good workmanship

minus
Small chain guard; uncomfortable bench on long journeys; high-frequency vibrations in the upper speed range; little power reserves

“Some find them boring, but I love the Africa Twin’s values. The reliable three-valve engine has no weaknesses apart from its sometimes fragile fuel pump. Without much care, it is good for astronomical mileage. The XRV is like a Japanese geisha spoiling the traveler. With easy handling, stable chassis and a smooth engine that can withstand bad fuel. There is also a decent payload. For me, great function is not boring, it is lovable.”

BMW R 1100 RS

BMW R 1100 RS: year of construction 1995, 79200 kilometers, previous owner, 2999 euros.

With a slight frown, I thought back to the 999 euro bikes. At that time I had a lot of work to do with the badly battered Yamaha FJ 1100 and was only able to get to the start months later. No experiments this time. I wanted driving pleasure from the very first moment. Quickly leafing through your mind: Yes, it could be a BMW R 1100 RS with the four-valve boxer and Telelever chassis. Just not in red. That is reserved for Italians. In the budget of 3000 euros, the offer is manageable. The blue one could prove to be a real stroke of luck, since she has spent her previous life in a family that neither can nor wants to hide her high affinity for the white and blue.

Editor Stefan Gluck gets the cheapest with 2999 euros.

The last major inspection was just 1000 kilometers ago. The engine runs smoothly, cleanly and mechanically quietly, the Technoflex chassis works hard but heartily. Hammer price at 2999 euros. And plan fulfilled: the BMW was the first to be registered.

Data
Two-cylinder boxer engine, 1085 cm3, 66 kW (90 PS), weight 246 kg, payload 204 kg, tank capacity 23 liters, seat height 780 to 820 mm, top speed 217 km / h, consumption on country roads 6.0 liters / 100 km (Super)

plus
Comfortable seating position suitable for touring, also for the pillion passenger; Seat height and handlebars adjustable; with G-Kat and ABS up-to-date technical standard

minus
Driving behavior takes getting used to due to Telelever; poorly shiftable gearbox; partially pronounced constant jerking

“I was looking for a moped with which two people could cover longer distances in a humane and fast manner. And that is still noticeable with suitcases. The biggest problem was finding an R 1100 RS that isn’t red. This blue is really crazy.”

Bikes for 999 euros and the consequences – what are they actually doing …

… the 999 euro bikes that MOTORRAD sold again last autumn?

Finding a fat Suzuki Bandit can’t really be that difficult. But in spite of the large number of offers: if you want an unmatched used one, you have to search a long time. Nobody in the editorial team would have thought that the 999 euro bikes that MOTORRAD bought a year ago would attract so much attention. In issues 8, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24/2007, we reported in detail on the illustrious quartet, which consisted of the Honda CX 500, Suzuki GS 500 E and the Yamaha models XT 600 and FJ 1100. Even long after the sale, readers kept getting in touch asking about the whereabouts of the machines. So MOTORRAD did some research and was pleased that all of the machines were still in the possession of the buyers at the time and so far had no defects whatsoever. With a good 3000 kilometers driven since then, the FJ 1100 tops the current list. This is followed by the CX 500 with almost 2000 and the GS 500 E with around 1000 kilometers. The latter was throttled to 34 hp just one day after purchase and moved by the tier driver’s license holder. On the CX and FJ everything stayed the same, on the XT 600 hardly any component was left untouched. Wolfgang T. put an unbelievable 4,000 euros into the aged enduro over the winter. He had the engine completely overhauled in a specialist workshop, all parts repainted, and on top of that there was a new chain set. MOTORRAD is certain: Anyone who puts so much money into a used car will never give it away. The other 999 euro bikes have obviously found the right buyers as well. We wish you a good trip in the future.
