Granturismo without desmodromism
Ducati has extensively developed its V4 sports engine for use in other series. The new variant is called V4 Granturismo, comes without Desmodromic and celebrates its premiere in the Multistrada V4.

Ducati introduces the brand new V4 Granturismo and presents an extremely compact, light and powerful engine with high torque values. The V4 Granturismo engine was made for the Ducati Multistrada V4 developed and – real Ducatisti now have to be strong – dispensed with a desmodromic valve control.

Extremely long maintenance intervals
An impressive number in advance that can be directly linked to the Desmo waiver. A whopping 60,000 kilometers there Ducati for the new 90-degree V4 as the inspection interval for the valve clearance check and the spark plug change. Oil and filter have to be changed every 15,000 kilometers (or after two years at the latest), the air filter can be used for 30,000 kilometers. The long intervals should noticeably relieve the wallet in terms of maintenance.

No desmodromics: the valve return relies on conventional valve springs.
Nevertheless, the V4 Granturismo offers a lot of power, even if the design has been optimized for torque and a wide power range. The V4 Granturismo, which of course is homologated according to Euro 5, delivers 170 hp at 10,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 125 Nm at 8,750 rpm from a displacement of 1,158 cm³. The bore is 83 millimeters, the stroke 53.5 millimeters. As already mentioned above, the valve is not actuated via desmodromics and thus a forced closure, but also uses conventional springs for valve return. Compared to the Desmosedici Stradale, the V4 Granturismo engine has a smaller diameter (46 mm) throttle body, longer ducts and optimized combustion chambers. The by-wire controlled throttle valves of each bank are driven by a special electric motor and can be activated asynchronously between the two banks. This solution enables complex control strategies as well as cylinder deactivation of the rear bank, which takes effect at low speeds and for example at traffic lights.
Smaller and lighter than the V2

The V4 is more compact and lighter than the V2.
This makes the V4 more powerful than the V2 previously installed in the Multistrada. But is also more compact and lighter. The V4 Granturismo is 85 mm shorter, 95 mm flatter and only 20 mm wider than the 1260 V2. In addition, with a weight of 66.7 kilograms, it is around 1.2 kilograms lighter. The V4 principle is also less vibration – so the Italians save a balance shaft. Like the V4 sports engine, the V4 Granturismo also uses a crankshaft rotating in the opposite direction to the wheels. This partially compensates for the wheel gyroscopic forces and optimizes handling. The crank pins are offset by 70 degrees. The firing order of 0, 90, 290 and 380 degrees gives the four-cylinder almost a V2 sound. The six-speed gearbox with a shorter ratio uses a servo clutch and a blipper.

Conclusion
The new V4 is a huge step into the future for Ducati. The red one already had four instead of two cylinders, but the renunciation of the desmodromic typical of the brand is a huge and daring one. Not technically, but in terms of brand philosophy.
