Since the presentation of the CB 1100 design study at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2007, Honda spokesmen have been explaining why this motorcycle is not exporting to Europe. Now you have to forget your talk from yesterday, because the CB 1100 is coming.

 At first the effort was too great to industrialize the study, which was already ready for series production. When that happened for Japan, Australia and New Zealand, the follow-up costs for homologation, spare parts supply, translating the driver and workshop manuals and all the other hassle that goes into selling a motorcycle prevented them. And like a dark cloud hovered over it CB 1100 their performance of “only” 88 hp, which would prevent success. Thankfully, these long-standing concerns have finally been thrown off.

Anyone who takes a comparative look at the CB 1300 understands the scruples about the technology a little better. It has everything that the honest Japanese believe belongs to a motorcycle today. Above all, a water-cooled engine, which is fundamentally important for low noise and pollutant emissions, and modern wheel and tire dimensions as indispensable components for today’s standard of driving dynamics. The concept of the CB 1100 does not have either of these.

But you don’t even need it. Lush cubic capacity, purist equipment and a clear, simple appearance – these three cornerstones outline your topic much better. The engine characteristics – according to the press release – have been optimized so that you can shift up to the last of five gears and enjoy “creamy” four-cylinder power without hectic revs. The rather long stroke (bore and stroke: 63.5 and 67.2 millimeters) and the extremely moderate 5000 rpm, at which the maximum torque occurs, indicate that this has been achieved. And after all, the 1140 in EU configuration develops 90 hp. Thanks to a balancer shaft that rotates under the crankshaft at the front, the mighty, elegant four-cylinder should also work without any major vibrations.

The 18-inch wheels with 110 tires at the front and 140 tires at the rear are only slightly wider than the CB 900 F Bol d’Or in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They ensure harmonious proportions and should be good for a captivating handiness. That sounds believable too.

When it comes to emissions and safety, however, Honda puts an end to nostalgia, which is why the classically styled motorcycle is equipped with fuel injection and a thick catalytic converter, and it has a combination brake system with ABS. The well-known three-piston floating calipers for the front brake, which are controlled in different constellations depending on the motorcycle concept, serve as the basis. The CB brake works as a single CBS, in which the rear brake is supposed to be operated with the front wheel as well, while the step on the brake pedal should only activate the rear brake. Earlier versions of this system required an auxiliary brake cylinder at the front of the fork, which the CB 1100 does not have.

In addition to the CB 1100, Honda showed a motorcycle at Intermot that probably doesn’t exist ten times in the world: a rally machine for the Dakar 2013 based on the sports enduro CRF 450 X. With this commitment, the first factory outing at a Dakar since 1989, wants Honda gain experience, which should flow into the development of future enduros. Maybe even in a “South American twin”?
