Some manufacturers offer guarantees that go beyond the statutory warranty. At least in terms of the running time. An overview of the warranty periods of the major motorcycle manufacturers.

If the new bike suddenly has a damage, even though it was only ridden normally, it is extremely annoying. Fortunately, there is a guarantee. Or the guarantee? Or is it the same?

Guarantee and warranty

No. A guarantee is not just a guarantee. Even if these two terms are often used synonymously, they are clearly differentiated from each other.

Guarantee

The warranty, also called liability for material defects, is regulated by law and must be granted by every seller to the customer. Accordingly, the warranty claim can only be asserted against the seller, i.e. not against another dealer of the same brand, for example.

The statutory warranty period for new motorcycles is two years. During these two years, the seller is liable for all defects that can be shown to have existed at the time the contract was concluded. From the sixth month onwards, however, the buyer must prove that the defect already existed at this point in time.

guarantee

Guarantee, on the other hand, is the voluntary promise of a guarantor that something will retain certain properties over a certain period of time. Sounds very abstract at first. The guarantee agreement between the buyer and – be careful – the manufacturer therefore contains a precise description of which services can be claimed under which conditions. If the manufacturer does not acknowledge the defect, the customer can assert his statutory claims against the seller.

For motorcycles, the warranty usually covers pretty much all parts. In particular, the engine, the gearbox and the electrical system are often under warranty. Wear parts are usually not part of the guarantee. In the motorcycle industry, guarantee periods that hardly exceed the period of the statutory warranty are common.

Ducati

Ducati gives a two-year guarantee on all models.

For example, the Ducati guarantee statement states: “The guarantee expires if the motorcycle is repaired or serviced by others, as well as if non-original spare parts are installed. In addition, the guarantee does not cover damage from accidents, overloading, improper or negligent use. ”Similar formulations can also be found in the declarations of other manufacturers. When buying a new motorcycle, it makes sense to find out about warranty conditions in order to prevent (possibly nasty) surprises. ATTENTION: Guarantee periods usually only apply to road bikes and not to competition motorcycles.

In order to be able to make a warranty claim, the bike does not have to have been serviced by an authorized dealer.

These are the manufacturers’ standard runtimes

All well-known brands offer customers a manufacturer’s guarantee. For some, a further extension of the guarantee period is possible at an additional cost. As standard, the manufacturers grant the following guarantee periods (as of 08/2019):

  • Honda: 2 years
  • Yamaha: 2 years
  • Kawasaki: 2 years
  • Suzuki: 2 years
  • BMW: 3 years (so-called 2 + 1 warranty)
  • KTM: 2 years
  • Husqvarna: 2 years
  • Triumph: 4 years
  • Ducati: 2 years
  • MV Agusta: 3 years
  • Aprilia: 2 years
  • Moto Guzzi: 2 years
  • Harley-Davidson: 4 years
  • Indian: Scout and FTR 2 years, all other models 5 years

Warranty extensions are almost always possible. The dealers provide information on conditions.

Conclusion

Manufacturer guarantees of up to seven years are not uncommon for cars. In the guarantee agreements, however, there are also many loopholes through which the manufacturer can often evade liability in the event of damage. It is still a shame that the warranty periods for motorcycles are significantly shorter.
