Product test: top-class sports helmets in comparison
Comparative test sports helmets of the upper class
Well protected with the right sports helmet
Content of
It hurts the front racer a lot. The one behind is more lucky. PS recommends safe protection for light head landings. In the comparison test: 13 sporty motorcycle helmets of the top league.

Bamm, broken! Next helmet. The device slowly moves a few meters vertically upwards and rustles – bang! – down again. The impact is made on solid metal, this cap is also over. What sounds like happy helmet bashing has a method. We are in the test laboratory of TuV Rheinland in Cologne, shock absorption test. Among other things, 13 candidates go through this exercise, in which brand-new material worth several thousand euros blesses the time. It is part of the large sports helmet comparison test and provides important results.

Before the test, there was a lot of email traffic: order motorcycle helmets, send a questionnaire, organize the process. Despite all efforts to get all 19 helmet manufacturers / importers on board, three did not run: Bell, Blauer and Vemar. Three others (AGV, Scorpion and Suomy) will not bring their new sports hats onto the market until a little later, a follow-up test is firmly planned. The stragglers go through the same procedure as the motorcycle helmets that are already available today.
Two of them were already there in 2012 and will continue to be involved this year: Schuberth SR1 and Shoei X-Spirit II. The other manufacturers either sent a different model (Lazer) or modified their product from last year. For more information, see the respective motorcycle helmet. Remarkable: The price range of the helmets is between 200 euros (LS2) and around 850 euros (Arai).

Kindly please: The cold and snow in Germany led us to the sunny south of France for the helmet test.
The impact test is one of two main criteria. Logo, as long as you don’t take off, you don’t care about the absorption of forces. In principle, a simple weather protection is sufficient, in summer even sunglasses are enough to ward off hostile mosquitoes. But what if you get pulled off your bike? Then of course you need the greatest possible protection. There are sometimes big differences between the individual motorcycle helmets. With a lateral stroke of 5.5 m / s, the deviations between the best (Marushin) and the laggard in this discipline (Kabuto) are around 72 percent.
In this respect, there is still a lot to do for some helmet manufacturers. Experts even say that the potential of even the best is far from being exhausted. For this reason, we are very strict with the evaluation, no pot gets the maximum counter for shock absorption. The class leader among sporty motorcycle helmets is called Marushin and gets 24 out of 30 possible points for it.
Handling and operation
With this criterion, we pay attention to the usability of the helmet mechanics. How easy is it to open and close the ventilation? How easy is it to lock and reopen the visor? How easy is it to change the visor? Are breathing and wind protection easy to put on and take off? How complicated is it to take the pads out of the motorcycle helmet for washing?
Here, too, there are sometimes big differences between the models. With most motorcycle helmets, changing the visor works without any problems, with some you fumble with the wolf. The same applies to locking the visor in the closed state. The HJC wins the handling / operation chapter and gets 19 out of 20 possible points. The bottom of the ranking is the Airoh with ten counters.
ventilation
Volkmar Jacob
Misappropriated: Transporter as a mobile office.
Ventilation is an important feature. Especially during strenuous activities such as curling on the runway, the pilot thirsts for every fresh breeze. When it comes to chin ventilation, however, almost all motorcycle helmets disappoint. Usually nothing at all penetrates through the openings, in two cases only a barely perceptible breeze.
The only exception is the Shark, which leads a noticeable flow of air into the inside of the helmet. It looks a little better when it comes to treating the forehead and the top of the head. Ten helmets direct more or less refreshing goods to the thinking apparatus. The stragglers: Lazer and premier. You fall through the exercise with one point each, Marushin with two.
Field of view
Sitting upright, all marbles offer a sufficient field of vision. With one or the other, you can see the edge of the Pinlock anti-fog device (more on that later), but that’s never really annoying.
But there are bigger differences in the racing stance. Here only can Arai convince, which leaves a small viewing window between the pinlock edge and the upper end of the visor. For everyone else, a more or less large edge makes it difficult to look out of the motorcycle helmet. Here, too, the manufacturers should make improvements.
Fit / wearing behavior
Volkmar Jacob
Tip: When buying, check whether the station wagon pushes the helmet forward in the racing position.
From passive to active safety. This also includes wearing comfort, the second main criterion. After all, what use is the safest hat if it is uncomfortable? Nothing! Top helmets can be seen blindly when you put them on. They usually offer an excellent, precisely fitting and defined fit for even the most varied of head shapes. In addition, the upholstery feels pleasant and does not press anywhere. Fortunately, most motorcycle helmets are convincing in this regard. If something does pinch or pinch, good brands supply interior pads in different sizes. Important: When buying, make sure that the fit is accurate. Experience shows that after a while, even the slightest pressure sores can cause severe headaches.
Good dealers therefore allow their customers extensive test drives, which should not take less than 45 minutes. Sports riders take this opportunity to check whether their combi hump pushes their helmet forward in a racing position. When spinning around later, a slipping motorcycle helmet is extremely annoying – and dangerous. Fortunately, we didn’t notice anything negative about the test candidates in this regard.
Furthermore, interested parties should check how easily a hat can be put on and taken off. Trying it out several times in a row reveals narrow entrances and exits, which are not always immediately recognized when you put them on for the first time. On the subject of glasses suitability: Unfortunately, we cannot give any general recommendations on this. Reason: With the tested helmet sizes “M” and “L”, the testers sometimes made contradicting statements. For one, the glasses slipped easily into the helmet, while another could not put them on at all or only with great difficulty. The only thing that helps here is to check whether the helmet of your choice is suitable for glasses. The bottom line is that Arai is just ahead of the curve when it comes to wearing comfort X-Lite and BMW. The kabuto carries the red lantern.
aerodynamics
How calm is a helmet in the wind? How much resistance does it put up against air flowing in front and from the side? To find out, we and the guys snapped 13 motorcycle helmets and two different mopeds: one with full fairing (Honda CBR 600 F), the other naked (Honda NC 700 S).
With the fully disguised one, we burned around 200 things over the train. On the naked bike, we first unscrewed the small windshield and then checked the aerodynamics of the motorcycle helmets at 170 km / h. Result: Airoh and Lazer share the laurel in this discipline with maximum points each, followed by a broad midfield. There are no downward outliers.
Noise development
fact
Behind the scenes, experts are discussing the Sigma post.
Silence is something beautiful. This is especially true when the wind is thundering on the box. Only the Shark got full points here, closely followed by Arai, BMW, Schuberth and Shoei.
Although the motorcycle helmets are pleasantly quiet, you cannot avoid ear plugs when roasting at full throttle for a long time. We strongly recommend ear inserts even at lower speeds for the Airoh and Kabuto, which turned out to be real noisemakers.
Weight
Pilots can clearly feel a weight difference of just 100 grams. Although you get used to heavy motorcycle helmets over time, the basic rule is: the lighter the more comfortable. The Marushin is a true flyweight with a record 1130 grams. At the bottom of the table is the Arai, which weighs a whopping 1600 grams (size M).
Fogging tendency
fact
The experts from TuV Rheinland, Peter Schaudt and Jerôme Janben, discuss the test results.
Ten of the 13 candidates have a Pinlock system. This is a silicone-rimmed film that is attached to the visor from the inside. An air layer between the film and the visor prevents fogging very effectively. Only LS2, Shark and Marushin do without the system. The first two mentioned fog up quite late, but they are nowhere near the Pinlock. The Marushin motorcycle helmet steams up after just a few heavy breaths.
Equipment and processing
Can the visor be opened in fine steps or does it only have a few positions? Can it be locked in place? There are also points for an emergency unlocking of the cheek pads. In the event of an emergency, it enables rescuers to remove the upholstery in just a few simple steps with the motorcycle helmet on. This makes pulling off a lot easier. Only Airoh, Arai and Shoei offer such a system. When it comes to processing, there are sometimes clear differences between top helmets and the simpler ones. Don’t save in the wrong place here! After all, the hat shouldn’t fly around your ears right away. Especially not with a bam!
Shock absorption and laboratory test
fact
How much can a sports helmet withstand? PS wants to know exactly.
Many years ago, the responsible authorities established a generally applicable test standard for uniform safety standards. At the moment the ECE-R 22.05 applies, which owes its name to the last correction in February 2002. That was long ago. In addition, it still prescribes such nonsensical things as a shock absorption test with motorcycle helmets cooled down to minus 20 degrees. In addition, ECE-R 22.05 also provides for a blow on a flat anvil, which experts consider to be impractical.
For this reason, the colleagues from MOTORRAD, together with the specialists Peter Schaudt from TuV Rheinland and the accident researcher Florian Schueler, developed a different test method in 2009, according to which PS also tests. The method provides for an impact test at room temperature. In addition, instead of the flat anvil, there is a guardrail post (“Sigma post”) for use. The inspectors mark points on uniformly aligned motorcycle helmets that the helmet later thunders onto the post – once on the left and one on the right.
For the right side, the motorcycle helmet is accelerated to 7.5 m / s, which corresponds to exactly 27 km / h. On the left side there are 5.5 m / s (around 20 km / h). The standard dummy equipped with measuring electronics records the data.
There are two values involved: Acceleration “g” and “Head Injury Criterion” (HIC). In addition to the pure impact energy, the latter also takes into account the duration of the force. “The HIC is not considered a bio-mechanical protection criterion, it is only used for comparability,” says Schueler. For the test, we added both the g and the HIC values separately and distributed counters according to a point key. A stroke of the chin on the edge anvil is not included in the assessment. Reason: The forces are not only absorbed by the motorcycle helmet itself, but also by the chin strap. However, the probe does not measure there and so the measurements cannot be compared. Nevertheless, we have noted the values for orientation.
The shock absorption with the Sigma post is controversial. Because the part has two edges that the motorcycle helmet hits one after the other and not at the same time, despite the greatest care in alignment. This could falsify the measured values. This is currently being hotly debated in specialist circles. However, experience shows that the same candidates always do well or not so well in comparative tests. By the way: According to accident researcher Florian Schueler, impact with a solid object such as a wall is not the worst case for a helmeted head. Worse brain injuries result when the head hits an air-filled tire. The reason is the dreaded recoil effect (“rebound”).

Sharp test method
fact
Safety cage, lifting device, measuring electronics: test setup in the laboratory of TuV Rheinland.
Motorcycle helmets that are in stores in Germany are usually tested and homologated according to the ECE standard – otherwise there is no E number and the helmet is not approved for use on the road. This also applies to the helmets in the PS test. There is also a second helmet seal that is particularly common in Great Britain: the “Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Program”, or SHARP for short. Since 2007, an independent institute in Manchester has been issuing the test mark in cooperation with the British Ministry of Transport.
The biggest difference to the ECE certificate is that SHARP awards between zero and five stars. The motorcycle helmets tested are not only found to be suitable or unsuitable, but are also classified in terms of quality. The aim is to offer “motorcyclists an independent and objective decision-making aid” and to uncover “the different safety performance” of the helmets tested, as it says on the SHARP website.
Impact and slip tests are also intended to better simulate a real accident process. In contrast to the ECE standard, several different subsequent blows are emitted on the motorcycle helmet and the abrasion on asphalt is simulated. SHARP obviously copied the award of stars from the European crash test evaluation for new cars. Unlike there, however, at SHARP it is unclear how the star rating comes about. Critics therefore accuse the program of delivering unrealistic results. Materials researchers at the University of Birmingham took a closer look at the process as part of a study, with devastating results: SHARP is based on “a dubious mechanical model” and the impact tests used are based on a “misinterpretation” of the accident statistics. Therefore, it is 300 percent more likely than in reality that a fatal injury is calculated in the SHARP simulation. From a legal point of view, the seal is of no value anyway: In the EU, only ECE certification counts.

A motorcycle helmet of extremes and opposites. On the plus side, there is comfort, fit, weight and aerodynamics. In terms of noise development, on the other hand, it brings up the rear. This is also due to the fact that the windscreen could not be attached to the underside of the chin.
The GP 500 is also less convincing in the shock absorption test and the handling / operation chapter: visor with only three grids, fiddly interchangeable mechanics, visor lock difficult to operate, forehead ventilation slider that is too small. The bottom line is eleventh place for the Italian.
PS judgment: good-satisfactory

The most expensive and heaviest motorcycle helmet only provides moderate shock absorption values. One reason is the philosophy of a hard outer shell that is supposed to prevent objects from penetrating. The small control buttons for ventilation and the visor change, which takes a bit of getting used to, also stand in the way of better placement.
Also in need of improvement: chin ventilation and the rather selective air supply on the top of the head. Otherwise, the RX-7 GP is convincing across the board, especially when it comes to the chapters fit / wearing behavior and field of vision, it is great: fifth place.

The 2013 newcomer was one of the top five when he made his debut. Except for a somewhat narrow entry and exit, it shines above all with a superb fit and high wearing comfort. The motorcycle helmet from BMW scores well in the other criteria, but does not set a new record anywhere. We would have expected a little more from the shock absorption values - here it only ends up in the middle of the field.
Small imperfection: the visor’s pinlock pins rub against the rubber seal when opening / closing. And the lower ventilation directs the airflow up to the forehead instead of the chin.

The R-PHA was revised for 2013 and now also has a “plus” in its name. Although it has been modified, the chin ventilation does not direct the slightest breath of wind inside. Nothing has changed with shock absorption either HJC lands here in the lower middle field of the motorcycle helmets tested.
It looks a bit better in the disciplines of noise development, weight, field of vision and aerodynamics. The wearing comfort and the accuracy of fit are good average. The greatest strength of the HJC lies in its ease of use, where it gets almost full marks. Fair price that starts at 370 euros.

The Kabuto FF5V loses this test. Especially when it comes to shock absorption, he misses a lot of points and carries the red lantern. The motorcycle helmet from China is also not convincing when it comes to fit / comfort, because it clearly presses on the upper side of the head. In addition, the feed offers little comfort and getting out is quite tedious.
Additional points are deducted due to the restricted field of vision and the very high level of noise. In addition, the chin ventilation has no function, at least enough fresh air gets to the top of the head. Biggest plus: Pinlock visor.

Carbon
Last year Lazer was there with the sportier Kite Carbon Light hat, this time the importer sent Osprey Hypersport. The Lazer sets a highlight in terms of aerodynamics, where it marks the top together with the Airoh. And after all, it achieved the third-best values for shock absorption.
More than eighth place in the final ranking is still not possible. Reason: The motorcycle helmet presses something on the side between the temple and cheek, and the complete ventilation does not work. In addition, the visor cannot be locked and the view is very limited, especially in a racing position.

Carbon
A carbon helmet for 200 euros? LS2 make it possible. However, the pot made in China leaves some feathers during processing. In addition, he only ends up in the penultimate place in the shock absorption test. Other weaknesses: only three visor positions, high noise, ineffective chin ventilation.
It is also not fully convincing in the section on fit / wearing comfort. Although the cheek pads can be inflated using rubber bellows, the pads are quite full even without additional air. The biggest advantage is undoubtedly the price: a motorcycle helmet for bargain hunters.

The Marushin 999 RS is the surprise of the test: lowest weight, best shock absorption values, great handling, affordable price. Its flaws: almost inoperable ventilation, quite high noise level, somewhat scratchy inner lining.
In addition, the visor cannot be locked, which makes the motorcycle helmet particularly uninteresting for racing. It also steams up very quickly. With only six points behind the runner-up, the pot ends up in seventh place. Revise the ventilation, put a lockable Pinlock visor on, then it gets involved right at the front.

Only tenth place for the very valuable Italian pot. There are many reasons. On the one hand, the pad presses lightly against the cheeks and the top of the head. However, leads premier other upholstery in the range, they may help.
One thing is certain: at high speeds in a racing position, the visor pulls in at the top, and it cannot be locked. And the ventilation is without function. Another test victory after 2012! Although it only gets the maximum count when it comes to the tendency to fog, the Schuberth SR1 diligently scores through the evaluation table. Without a doubt, it is the most balanced motorcycle helmet on the test. For perfectionists there is still something to moan about: somewhat narrow exit, barely noticeable chin ventilation, limited field of vision in racing position.
In addition, the lower chin ventilation lever can hardly be operated when the windshield is attached. And despite the second-best impact values, there is definitely still something to be gained from here. Nevertheless: The SR1 is a top hat!

Thanks to the new inner lining and the slightly changed fit, the helmet is now very comfortable to wear. Sensitive natures are only bothered by the somewhat more difficult exit. The Shark gets the maximum number of points in terms of noise development. Except for the tiny slider for the forehead ventilation, it also shines in the handling chapter.
The ventilation, on the other hand, raises questions: incredible airflow on the chin, and at least in size M also on the top of the head. In size L, however, nothing arrived there. Unfortunately, the Shark does not have a Pinlock visor, which is why it can fog up. The bottom line is third place.

The bad news right at the beginning: As in 2012, the Shoei cannot quite convince in the impact test this year either. The Japanese grumble about the test method, but the conditions are the same for everyone. Another point of criticism: inconsistent ventilation. In both sizes, there is no airflow at the chin; there is only a fresh breeze on the top of the head in size L..

PS buying tip
As in 2012, the X-Lite lands in second place. The Italians modified their top model in terms of the upholstery, and there was also a new inner shell. Fit, comfort, usability and workmanship belong to the absolute top. He is still nine points short of the test winner Schuberth, seven of which are due to the impact rating alone. So there is still room for improvement here. Nevertheless, the X-802 R is a good match, also because the Italians call for a very fair tariff for motorcycle helmets: At around 450 euros, it is clearly the cheapest among the top helmets.

Evaluation and judgment
mps photo studio
Pile of misery: the hats are ripe for the bin after the crash test. Total value when new: 6523.19 euros.
The Schuberth SR1 comes closest to the ideal of sports drivers. He is nowhere really weak and scores very diligently in most of the criteria: test victory! The comparatively inexpensive X-Lite X-802 R follows at some distance – also a top motorcycle helmet, which, however, loses touch with the best in the impact test.

The revised and balanced Shark Race-R Pro is just one point behind. Behind him follows a broad midfield that sets real highlights in individual disciplines. On the seats: LS2 FF 396 CR1 Carbon – what a name! – and the Kabuto FF5V. The LS2 only costs 200 euros, so you can’t expect too much. The situation is different with the Kabuto: at a price of 450 euros, potential customers simply ask for more.
