Upside down world in Hockenheim: At the Tuner GP 2008, the Twin from LSL came in last on the dynamometer and one of the slowest motorcycles on the GP circuit – yet the Cafe Racer even delighted experienced testers.

Key data such as 1000 cc displacement and 180 hp ensure the ultimate thrill: How far can the throttle valves be opened in an inclined position without provoking the constantly threatening highsider or stretching the superbike’s front wheel uncontrollably towards the sky?

This LSL-Kawasaki W 760 asks different questions with 64 HP instead of 180 and 72 Nm instead of 110: Can so much self-restraint bring the real kick?

Unusually, with its gray paintwork almost restrained, the W 760 from the specialist LSL from Krefeld sparkles in the sun, undisguised, unmistakably classic, the vertical shaft twin-cylinder of the Kawasaki W 650.

But on closer inspection, racing ingredients reveal themselves at their best. Telescopic forks and struts from Ohlins exude a grand prix feeling, as do the aluminum swingarm, handlebar halves and footrests made in-house, as well as filigree add-on parts such as indicators and fittings wherever the eye can see.

The acoustics are also optically present. Two slim megaphones by Leo Vince replace the very British-inspired silencers of the original.

Engine and chassis

An additional 20 Nm and 14 hp make the bare Kawa legs.

Jochen Schmitz-Linkweiler not only helped the sedate two-cylinder upright shaft from Kawasaki properly, but also sensitively on the jumps. Three millimeters more bore lift the displacement from 676 to 733 cm³. With the increase in compression from 8.6 to 9.2, the processing of the channels and the tuning of the carburettors, now with open air funnels, not only the power increased by 14 hp, but above all the torque by a whopping 20 Nm.

The W 760 quickly reveals that the measures match the somewhat sedate temperament of the W 650 really helped on the jumps. The twin starts steadily and quickly moves towards the 8000 mark on the instrument cluster with a classic white background.

The two-cylinder engine develops considerably more steam over the entire engine speed range and even works hard when the original is already falling into asthmatic lethargy.

A sonorous suction noise and bassy sound from the megaphones underline the work of the twin, always present, but never intrusive. On the contrary, the sound is just as calming for the driver as the power development that can be controlled at any time: after the apex of the corner, open the throttle valve fully without regret and enjoy the homogeneous power development, combined with round, fluid lines that dictate the tight, but by no means uncomfortable, cleanly coordinated chassis.

Tires, brakes, ergonomics

fact

Ohlins fork, Nissin calipers and wave brake discs.

12 kilograms less weight, a more easy-to-handle chassis geometry and an 18-inch instead of 19-inch front wheel give the LSL-Kawa unprecedented maneuverability with better driving stability at the same time.

With the grippy Bridgestone BT 012, sharp inclines are a must. The elaborate braking system with the Nissin four-piston calipers and the wave brake discs can handle any situation with ease. In addition, the missing cladding promotes a total overview.

Driving on the racetrack has seldom been more relaxed, easy going in every situation. Hardly ever has motorcycling been more relaxed, more playful.

Small criticism on the side: Instead of the mouse-gray tank and the flat bench, a flat, elongated aluminum short-range tank and a hump bench à la Norton Manx would have accentuated the character of the cafe racer better.

The total price of 23,500 euros is also initially shocking. But don’t worry: Jochen Schmitz-Linkweiler has built a lot on the Kawasaki that is good and expensive. Interested parties can order each conversion measure individually and put together an individual package that guarantees driving pleasure on the racetrack or on the country road without regrets.
