Ducati MH 900 Evoluzione auctioned
Only $ 20,000 for a polished MH 900e

In Canada, one of a total of 2,000 Ducati MH 900e was auctioned for the equivalent of 16,500 euros. That is hardly more than it cost again in 2002.

  • Limited and yet worth nothing
  • Conclusion

Ducati built exactly 2,000 MH 900 Evoluzione between 2001 and 2002 and offered it for just under 30,000 marks at the time of the D-Mark. Even then, the signs were pointing towards cult and appreciation. 20 years later brings one MH 900e from 2002 with the number 1,990 only $ 20,000 at RM Sotheby’s. Despite extensive polishing work on the rims, improved clutch hydraulics and only 621 kilometers on the clock. The auction house valued the Duc between 18,000 and 24,000 dollars – a range that is customary in the market, even in Germany.

MH900e in auction

the Ducati in the auction has a Canadian registration and the chassis number ZDM1LA4N42B001641. It was built in 2002 and is number 1,990 out of 2,000, as evidenced by the badge on the polished tank cover. Allegedly, the MH is said to have only 621 kilometers on the clock, which is underlined by the almost 20-year-old Michelin Pilot Sport tires with the DOT 3101. It probably comes from first hand and was partly polished to a high gloss by this – probably rather unfamiliar hands. Including the rims including the star, the footrest system and various lids and covers on the 904 cubic twin with 74 hp. The open and polished toothed belt covers, which can be considered contemporary, the conversion to the open cover of the dry clutch and the slave cylinder of the clutch hydraulics are not standard.

MH 900e in the test

With the release of the MH900e from Ducati in 2000 MOTORRAD drove one of the rare motorbikes through the top test. At that time from Werner “Mini” Koch, who summed up: “A daring design with provocative elements polarizes the community. But the standing applause from the audience confirms: The MH 900e is arriving and not only impressing the Ducati warehouse. The fact that with the fiery red Ducati a real cornering burner with brilliant driving dynamics was born all the more beautiful.”

Limited and yet worth nothing

Maintaining at least its value in a good 20 years is generally not bad for a motorcycle. Not calculating an increase in value for a strictly limited property like the MH 900e is strange. Especially against the background that the subsequently presented Sport Classic models Sport 1000, Sport 1000 S, Paul Smart LE and GT 1000 have been increasing in price for years. After 14,000 dizzy euros for a new LE, should a brand new Paul Smart out of the box in early 2020 Bring a good 30,000 euros in an auction, driven models are currently difficult to find for less than 25,000 euros.

The prices of the Sport 1000 S, which Stefan Kaschel once wrote about, are also rising sharply: “Everyone thinks the new Ducati 1000 S is beautiful. But not because it looks like it was yesterday. But because their role model already looked good yesterday.” With these half-boarded models, the 10,000 is fixed in price, the monoposto variants go directly to 15,000 euros – if you can find one. New price: 11,495 euros. Ducati only built 2,000 of the MH 900e, and of the 1000 Classic models, it has hardly sold any more in seven years. The series models are almost rarer than the limited version.

First, second and …! Who would buy a motorcycle at a real auction??

I don’t do anything else.

A little thrill would be great.

Conclusion

Limited model – we learn – can also name the effect on the market and the price development. In the case of the Ducati MH900e, the look that was interesting then and now plays a major role. The fact that the Classic models then have the better and often 15 HP more powerful 1000 engine does not help in the formation of legends either. Incidentally, the MH 900 shares the fate of the weak increase in value with the first MHR models from Ducati with the king-shaft engine. And unfortunately it must also be attested: Maik “The bike” Hailwood would have turned 81 in 2021, but has also been dead for 40 years. Memories are getting harder and harder – even of motorcycles with this name.
