The mood at the meeting was clouded: the news spread like wildfire across the campground. An aerobatic plane, which had nothing to do with the event, crashed over the area. Unfortunately, any help came too late for the pilot.

In the eighth-mile race Race 61 of the Roadrunner’s Paradise, pretty much anything can start, the main thing is that it is cool and built in 1961 or older. Only one plane was not allowed to take part, but did it anyway and then caused a near-disaster.

Saturday early morning. The rusty hot rods, the shiny Mustangs, as well as the old Harleys, the AWOs, the MZs are still silent. Franky from the 08/15 racing crew, a garage community from Berlin, is already standing in front of his tent in overalls. “Screw again, eh ?! Got to get the car going for the race.”

He means Race 61, in which he competes every year. A sprint race over the eighth mile, open to all vehicles of different categories built up to 1961. Launched 16 years ago by the operators of the Berlin rock’n’roll club Roadrunner’s Paradise. The race is scheduled to start on the tarmac this afternoon. Where planes once took off and landed, there are qualifications first, then car versus car, motorcycle versus motorcycle for times. That’s why most of them came here to the extensive site of the Aviation Museum in Finowfurt, around 50 kilometers northeast of Berlin. Because of the race and to celebrate a weekend in the fifties spirit of the Roadrunner.

“Funny, yesterday Franky’s Harley was still running,” says Ludd’n Muck. Together with his brother Dan and friend Peanuts, he came from Bad Segeberg in Schleswig-Holstein. The three then met up with Achim from Baden-Wurttemberg at the campsite. So far, so normal.

What is striking, however, is that Ludd’n Muck, Achim and Peanuts each have a Duna sidecar attached to their motorcycle. And so, in perfect harmony, an XS, an SR and a Guzzi team stand next to each other, each with a Hungarian boat from the 50s and always marveled at by the visitors strolling across the square. While everything has to be perfect with Peanuts ’XS 650, everything harmonizes and shines, Achim is more of a fan of cable tie customizing: You take what you have lying around and build it nicely into the 1000 SP. Ludd’n Muck’s team is an SR dream in white and gold.

The Duna crew came for the races, but not only. Because there is also a lot to marvel at: turquoise Chevrolets, BSAs with aluminum tanks, venerable Indians, BMWs with fine decorative lines, modified AWOs – they all park next to tents, cruise during the day on the dealer mile, on the clothes, jewelry, skulls of every shape and every material, paintwork and pinstripe artwork are offered for sale.

Many vehicles proudly wear a starting number for the race or mill their way through the muddy roads of the campground. Rock ‘n’ roll hovers over the square, garnished with the scent of french fries. Several thousand visitors are there. And many of them are a show in themselves: wide petticoats swing around the high-heeled legs of the girls in the 50s look, alongside cool guys with greats, mostly in jeans and leather and often with colorful tattoos up to both arms.

The Duna crew takes off coal to nearby Finowfurt to go shopping before the place starts to really buzz. With this range of devotional items, even men like to go shopping. On the way back, a long line of vehicles is waiting, some of them dull, rumbling eight-cylinders, some of them modern cars, the onlookers pulling in. Suddenly a siren howls and an ambulance rushes towards the entrance. Then at least the solo motorcycles are allowed to pass the queue.

Misfortune on the site

Saturday after the accident: The mood returns to the square only hesitantly.

But what happened. It goes like wildfire over the campsite: “An aerobatic pilot has just crashed”, is told in a low voice. “At first the plane flew upside down over the runway past the grandstand, but far too low. Then the pilot couldn’t turn, the wing got stuck in a solar field, the plane hit the ground and exploded.”

The plane had nothing to do with the event, and apart from the pilot – a small miracle – nothing happened to anyone. But any help came too late for the stunt pilot. The Duna crew also looks concerned when they arrive and hear about the accident. “Well, if they don’t cancel the race”, oracles Ludd’n Muck.

He should be proved right: creaky loudspeakers announce that out of piety there will be no start today. If you want, you can drive the eighth mile on Sunday, but without a rating. Some of them circle their hot rods back onto the trailer and leave the square. But the majority remains. And although the plane crash is a topic of conversation everywhere, the spirit of rock ’n’ roll wakes up again in the evening between stalls and hangars. Even Franky – Harley ready to race or not – and other guys from around the 08/15 crew stroll around relaxed, bobbing to the music of the bands. Girls with blonde hair, their bangs tamed into a perky quiff, sit on the back of pick-ups, smile at the crowd with bright red lipstick, bob their legs in their wide skirts.

Rock ‘n’ roll is back

Rockabilly girls and tattoos: number girls in fifties outfits.

Six and eight-cylinder engines purr at low speed and start to rumble as soon as the driver taps the accelerator pedal. An AWO meanders through the dense crowd, a roaring panhead demands passage, motorcycle combinations are sometimes manned by three to four people. With an old Polski Fiat 126, externally rusted to the point of disintegration, a group of Poles roars past again and again. A particularly daring man in a leather vest either bawls from the roof or lets himself be pulled behind on an old wooden sledge.

During a stop at the Airfield Casino, a rockabilly couple breaks away from the Fiat and shows what they can do: The petticoat swirls, the cherry-red mouth shines through the twilight of the hangar, the girl flies high over the dance partner’s leather cap. A second couple also twitches. Rock ‘n’ roll is back at Roadrunner’s Paradise.

As announced, Race 61 will start on Sunday without any ranking. The visitors also have their fun. The starter girl first lifts the flag high above her head, then pulls it down while jumping. Engines roar. But the Duna crew has already packed the teams and is ready to leave. One last time the boys stroll across the square. And the right race? Well, that’s going to be seen next year.
