A lesson in five acts: How a false start becomes a success. Why series sounds like boxers. What the clone did. Why 650 is actually 800. What life is like without Tele-, Duo or Paralever. MOTORRAD explains what to look for when buying a used BMW racing machine.

Second-hand advice BMW F 800

Simply good: The F 800 dispenses with the usual BMW chassis frills – and is still fast.

We have the boxer for the traditionalists and the single-cylinder for the women of the traditionalists. And we have the K models for all four-cylinder fans with a Japanese phobia – we’re still missing something?”

The BMW managers did not have to think twice: “We lack the typical middle class!” In response to this finding, the Bavarians presented the fourth model series in their modular system in 2006 with the initially only two-part F-800 collection. The half-naked S and her touring sister ST, who was incomprehensible only a few months later, made no secret of the fact that their production had to be significantly cheaper than that of the boxers. Two unadorned aluminum profiles as a frame, toothed belt instead of cardan shaft, telescopic fork instead of Telelever, a directly hinged shock absorber and therefore no chassis frills, as well as a – at least externally – quite simple in-line two-cylinder that was manufactured by Rotax in Austria – pretty was different.

But the pragmatic sisters convinced from the start with driving stability, low fuel consumption, great throttle response, a lot of power in the lower and middle speed range and a very pleasant sound.

Gentle character: better throttle response, fewer load changes – the F 650 GS is the better F choice for some.

The twin, which is by no means so simple inside (keyword “Auxiliary connecting rod”) sounds as robust as its boxer sisters, with whom it is closely related technically as a co-runner. So it could have been the beginning of a wonderful middle-class career. But it wasn’t; because the boxer sound was accompanied by nasty background noises: The F cloned, cracked and clacked. When shifting, when changing loads, when coasting – actually always. BMW got the problem under control at the beginning of 2007, but the F 800, especially in the somewhat more uncomfortable S version, stopped at the dealer for the time being. As a result, the much more humane ST succeeded in rallying a fan base consisting of more sedate and calmer characters, but it wasn’t until spring 2008 that the F 800 topic really caught on: the F 800 GS and with a new frame and revised engine their sister F 650 GS stormed the approval charts.

The 650 has nothing in common with the single of the same name. As with the F 800 GS, its displacement is 798 cm³, but for marketing reasons (“Maybe beginners don’t dare to go for an 800”) the simpler equipped GS with 71 instead of 85 hp weaker GS led to a confusion of names. But the circus was probably not so wrong: The F 650 GS is the best-selling F-Twin. But the ingeniously handy and chic F 800 R will probably overtake her. The 87 hp sweeper is new and used like hotcakes.

Used hit parade

At the risk of not being able to read it anymore: For every halfway young used BMW, the complete service booklet is a decisive purchase criterion; because BMW is world champion when it comes to things “Facelift at the dealer” and “silent callbacks”. Here a new mapping, there an improved component – if you don’t show up at the friendly, you look into the tube. Important (service book) check point for S and ST used buyers: Was the timing belt changed after 40,000 kilometers? Of course the part lasts longer, how long exactly, but nobody can guarantee it. Anyone who visits an R or GS has it easier; because their chain wear can be easily checked. Early chain elongation is an issue, especially with the F 650 GS. 34 HP throttles and lowering are not only available as original conversions, but also as accessories. Better hands off, their quality (response behavior or chassis geometry) usually does not come close to the original. Also worth checking: Hidden screw connections – rust likes to bloom here.

Masterpiece: The four-time street bike freestyle world champion Chris Pfeiffer has been using the F as gymnastics equipment since 2006. There was a special model named after him of the R version in the 2010 model year.

There is a clear used hit parade for the F-800 series: The F 800 GS is right at the top and therefore the most popular. For less than 8,000 euros, there are only kilometer kings (over 20 tkm) or copies with off-road battle marks – if at all. The majority is traded between 8,500 and 9,000 euros. The F 800 R and the F 650 GS are just as expensive (compared to the original price). Used R start at just under 7,000 euros, the best selection is between 7,500 and 8,200 euros. the “small” GS is traded from 5500 euros, it gets interesting between 6000 and 6500 euros. The following applies to the three models: The demand (at the retailer!) Is usually greater than the supply. The ST follows with a gap in popularity – good offers start at 6,000 euros. The S is the last in popularity, but has crossed the dumping valley. With luck, from under five mille.
