Please bring your seats into an upright position and stop smoking … Whether the Kawasaki ZX-12R is also taking off as a used vehicle?
Artur Bondza
01/20/2003
The goals of the Kawasaki engineers when developing the ZX-12R were unmistakable: “We’ll build the strongest, fastest and most stable big bike and pull Suzuki’s falcons a lot.” The result was a motorcycle that is noticeable not only for its sheer power? ? no, the developers gave the strongest green ever a revolutionary monocoque frame, which also serves as an air filter box, and colleagues from aviation helped with the aerodynamic solutions. Rumor has it that the wing and mirror were removed from a Lockheed at night and in fog. The concept worked: the frame is a model of torsional rigidity, and the wind protection is unrivaled in this motorcycle category. With the Hayabusa drivers folded on the tank, a ZX-12R driver can only smile in a relaxed manner, even when they do well over 200 things. Had it not been for various problems at take-off, the Kawa-Air would probably have started flying high. Broken engines, hacking about manipulated press machines, a sudden extension of the running-in time to 3,200 kilometers and then the major gearbox damage to the long-distance machine from MOTORRAD after 44,000 kilometers (19/2001) brought the ZX-12R from the high-speed cloud to the ground technical reality. Today it’s all almost cold coffee. Fortunately, the gearbox damage remained an isolated case, only occasionally does a driver complain about problems with shiftability and idling when the engine is cold. The transmission was one of the Kawasaki’s few weak points from the start. Due to the engine power and the enormous torque, the driving claws are heavily relief-ground to prevent the gears from jumping out. As a result, a lot of pressure is exerted on the forks when shifting, which manifests itself in increased wear and, for the driver, in bony shifting behavior. Otherwise the engine is robust and reliable. This was also shown in the long-term test of our sister magazine PS (7/2001). The engine easily put away the 50,000-kilometer marathon and was almost as good as new, except for the gearshift forks. Minor points of criticism: vibration cracks on the manifold, a leaking tank on the return pipe (recall campaign) and the inaccurate fuel gauge. On the A1 models from the year of construction 2000, constant travel jerks occasionally occur, which are loud Kawasaki can be remedied by adjusting the throttle valve potentiometer or replacing the control unit. From 2001 the control unit was reprogrammed due to the top speed limitation. The constant speed jerking disappeared as well as the number 340 on the speedometer.
A used ZX-12R is rarely found at motorcycle dealers, most motorcycles are traditionally traded privately. When researching the used market, it became apparent that the 1200s on offer have relatively few kilometers down the road, and with a bit of negotiating skills, this pocketbook and the season could help you to get a real bargain. Saved euros can be invested in gasoline and tires, both of which the ZX-12R is not exactly squeamish about.

Inside interview with Herbert O. Kainzinger – Kawasaki ZX-12R
? The Kawasaki ZX-12R is bursting with performance, why is there a need for improvement? Many drivers want more performance in the mid-range, which enables an even more confident driving style.? Which engine internals are processed in the ZX-12R? Crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, cylinder head with valves and camshafts as well as the injection system.? How can fuel consumption be reduced? Power and torque curves must be improved, especially in the lower and middle speed range, in order to reduce consumption with identical or better driving performance.? What do you say about so-called chip tuning? Basically, it makes little sense to simply install a tuning chip or to influence the series control unit using adapted devices such as Yoshimura EMS, Power Commander, Factory EMS or Factory TEKA. With such an intervention, parts that already exist or need to be replaced, such as the exhaust system, air filter insert, etc., and any engine tuning that may have been carried out, must be taken into account. But this is only possible on a suitable test bench with load generation, exhaust gas measurement, suitable peripherals and, above all, many years of experience.? Your exhaust recommendation for the street and the racetrack? For the street: Standard or Akrapovic manifold system with individually manufactured Y-distributor and two adapted ABE silencers. For the racetrack: Akrapovic complete system? What helps against the somewhat stubborn turning behavior? A change to a 190 rear tire and a chassis set-up based on the driver and his driving style.? You have often had a look at the innards of the engine, how do you rate the stability? The engine of the ZX-12R is problem-free.

Readers’ comments – Kawasaki ZX-12R
As a switch from the ZX-10, I am completely thrilled. The only disadvantage is the modest quality of the pillion passenger. Mike Rompf, Herbrechtingen
An upper hammer, the seating position and the driving experience far exceed those of my Suzuki Hayabusa, Thomas Seifert, Holzgerlingen
The ZX-12R is for people who cruise, but also want to burn the cheeky snot boys if necessary. Herbert Windwarder, Vienna
The motorcycle is simply fun and in a good mood, while strolling, on the country road and in serpentines.Gerd Schensok, Wolfsburg
Improvement Tips – Kawasaki ZX-12R
As standard, the big green rolls off the production line with 200 slippers from Bridgestone or Dunlop. The Dunlop D 207 lasted an average of 4700 kilometers in the MOTORRAD endurance test, unfortunately with compromises in driving comfort and a strong righting moment when braking. The Bridgestone BT 010/011 turned out to be the better choice. With powerful grip over the entire lean angle as well as homogeneous driving behavior, it ran 6200 kilometers and is therefore particularly recommended for everyday use. The Michelin Pilot Sport HPX, specially developed for high-performance machos, even managed 8,200 kilometers in the test, but cannot hold a candle to the Bridgestone in terms of driving behavior. If you can do without the prestige of the thick skin, you can mount tires in a more manageable 190 size, Alpha-Technik offers approvals (around 70 euros) for various 190s from Avon, Bridgestone, Dunlop, Michelin and Pirelli. Chassis The only criticism of the chassis of the ZX-12R is the somewhat too softly tuned shock absorber. The revision of the valves and a harder spring costs from tuning specialists such as Hubert Hofmann in Rottenburg from 125 euros. If you want to spend more money, you can use the replacement dampers from Ohlins, Wilbers, Withe-Power and Co. With Superbike handlebar conversion kits from ABM or LSL from around 340 euros, changing lean angles is easier. Disadvantage: The center of gravity moves backwards, and the driver brings restlessness into play at high speeds.
