After Suzuki initially withdrew the V-Strom 1000 from the market after six years of construction in 2007 due to moderate sales, a new model should soon follow. One that can do better in the shark tank segment of travel enduro bikes, which is dominated by BMW. However, this was only presented for the year of construction 2014, finally with ABS (see model upgrade). Why this long pause? Unclear financial reasons? Just speculation, but in fact the 1000 series has been out of the window for a long time. At the premiere of the V-Strom – in 2002 still called DL 1000 – the motorcycle was called the “Sportenduro Tourer”. Apparently in order to avoid comparisons with already established large enduro bikes as much as possible.

The name was also considered appropriate at the time, because the short-stroke, sporty 90-degree V2 with 98 hp, framed by extremely stiff, voluminous aluminum profiles, was actually more suitable for street athletes than for an adventure bike for gravel and potholes. When selling, Suzuki cannibalized itself from 2004 onwards through the small, but externally almost identical 650s sister, which outperformed the 1000s as an inexpensive all-rounder. However, the large, high-torque Suzuki DL 1000 V-Strom is the better choice for two passengers and has therefore established itself in the touring scene as a second-hand bike with good value even after the interim construction stop. This is where the new one comes in: as a handy, stable power machine for little money.

While the donor of the engine, the sporty Suzuki TL 1000 S, has often complained about technical defects, complaints about unreliable technology are the exception with the touring-style Suzuki DL 1000 V-Strom. Smaller annoyances are known, however: In model years 2002 and 2003, weak torsion springs on the clutch basket sometimes led to rattling, and the hydraulic clutch tends to leak. Check! Be careful if the V2 dies during a test drive – the reason may be a valve clearance that is too small. Hard throttle response, slapping exhaust and constant speed jerking of the engine, which is very leanly tuned via injection, are not uncommon, but if they are strong, a professional workshop should readjust the throttle valve system – this costs between 50 and 100 euros. Very popular accessories: touring windows, comfort seats and complete case systems.

Market situation

The Suzuki V-Strom 1000 is a popular motorcycle as a used motorcycle – but only if the price is right. Otherwise, due to the lack of ABS and its not particularly popular design, it is not exactly a magnet for attention. After all, it appeals not only to touring riders as a target group, but also to sporty riders who – without having to do without steam under their bums – would like to sit comfortably and not cramped. Most of the time, these drivers don’t care about a brake assistant. But hardly any interested party wants to invest more than 5000 euros, the music is more likely to be under 4000 euros. For this money, neat, well-maintained, frequent-user machines are offered, ideally with a suitcase set. Mileage of more than 50,000 kilometers is not uncommon, but these offers are more likely to be found at private sellers. Copies with low mileages of less than 20,000 kilometers for their age are also welcome at dealerships and, if they are in good overall condition, can sometimes cost around 4500 euros. The new model from 2014 does not yet play a role on the used market.

Facelift

  • 2002 Market launch of the DL 1000 V-Strom, type WVBS. Power: 98 hp. Weight: 237 kilos. Price: 9990 euros.
  • 2003 Modification of the clutch basket and the seat. The spring preload can now be adjusted for the fork. Price: 9590 euros.
  • 2004 Change of the model name: V-Strom 1000. Cockpit instruments are similar to those of the V-Strom 650 with a larger digital display panel. In addition, a three-way height-adjustable windshield, new hand protectors, mirrors and indicators. The gearbox and shift mechanism have been changed slightly. Empty weight increases by one kilo. Price unchanged.
  • 2005 new switch unit on the right, permanent driving light. Price unchanged.
  • 2006 crankcase and oil spray nozzles changed. Price unchanged.
  • 2007 Last model year of the WVBS type in Germany (2008 still on sale). The only change: white indicator glasses. Price: 9220 euros.
  • 2014 New model, based on the revised 90-degree V2. The most important changes: 1037 instead of 996 cm³, 100 hp, new aluminum frame, 13 percent lighter, upside-down fork, radial brake, ABS, traction control, 2-in-1 exhaust system, tank capacity 20 instead of 22 liters. New: cockpit, trim parts, headlights. Weight: 229 kilos. Price: 11,990 euros.
