Second-hand advice: Yamaha FZ1 / FZ1 Fazer

Second hand advice Yamaha FZ1 / FZ1 Fazer (2006 – 2010)
Rammstein on wheels

Suddenly everyone was building high-powered naked bikes. Just not Yamaha. Until 2006 the long-awaited FZ1 entered the ring with a half-switched Fazer sister.

“Rammstein on Wheels”: For MOTORRAD editor Stefan Kaschel the brand new one FZ1 In the shop window evaluation, expectations were set high. Especially since Yamaha fans had to wait a long time for this radically pointed naked bike. Triumph Speed Triple, Kawasaki Z 1000 and Aprilia Tuono had long since established themselves in the area of the high-horsepower “Streetfighters ex works”. The FZ1 should now prove itself here. She had brought with her the engine of the super sporty sister R1, but for the naked bike it was designed for 150 hp through various measures (compression, camshafts, flywheel mass, mapping). However, when it came to tuning, the Yamaha engineers did not show a lucky hand. Instead of a powerful bottom-center coordination that is suitable for country roads, the FZ1 (together with the half-faired sister model Fazer) only really takes off at 7500 rpm.

In addition, the sometimes hard, slightly delayed throttle response spoils the clean line on winding roads. Many FZ1 pilots have therefore now leaned on themselves and converted to a smaller chain sprocket – what the Yamaha brought a noticeably better draft (“inspection”). The chassis is nowhere near the same level as the R1, but is generally okay with its damping reserves. In keeping with the more touristy outfit, the Fazer is a little more comfortable. The tight coordination of the FZ1 harmonizes well with the powerfully gripping and finely adjustable braking system – the Yamaha remains stable on its lane even with hard stopping maneuvers. From the second model year, however, the Fazer scores with its standard ABS.

Yamaha FZ1 Fazer with a more comfortable, tuned chassis.

Real deficits are not known in the still young used machines. When FZ1 or Fazer are in the workshop, inspection work usually has to be carried out or wear parts replaced. Typical weak point: the sluggish draft. Which is why many FZ1 types are already on the road with a smaller sprocket. Usually it is a 16-tooth sprocket from Enuma (www.enuma.de). According to the manufacturer, no entry is required for the conversion, as it is within the tolerance. Self-screwdrivers cost around 20 euros, but have to be prepared for extensive work (dismantling the shift rod plus footrest plate). A steering damper (e.g. from WP Suspension, 250 euros) is advisable in order to arm yourself against the typical FZ1 handlebar slap. In addition, the bare FZ ones have just been upgraded with mini indicators, small license plate holders or retrofit rear pots. It can look nice, but it doesn’t have to be. It is good if the seller also packs the original parts with them. It is essential to clarify whether the recall from 2008 (risk of breakage of the rearview mirror) was done in the authorized workshop.

Market situation

Full service history and first-hand: This entry can be found with many offers for the FZ1 and FZ1 Fazer in the well-known sales portals of motorradonline.de, mobile.de and motoscout24.de. However, this popular sales title – still – has its price. The naked or half-wrapped version of the 1000 is rarely offered for less than 5000 euros. However: Due to the many offers and rather moderate demand, a big discount can be negotiated, especially for ABS-free bikes. When it comes to mileage, the warehouse is divided: While even the older model years of the FZ1 almost never exceeded 20,000 kilometers, the FZ1 Fazer has a rather eventful past. Annual mileages of 10,000 to 15,000 kilometers are not uncommon for the half-shell Yamaha and testify to its good touring characteristics. Usually combined with travel delicacies such as suitcase sets, high windshields or GPS mounts with power sockets.
