Second hand advice Yamaha FJR 1300 (2001 – 2011)
The top tourer from Yamaha

Yamaha’s top tourer brings a lot of power to the road, provides the best service as a motorhome, and as a used car, the price-performance ratio is also good. A success story of ten years now.

Performance Tourer – an advertising word creation, composed by the manufacturer, which applies exceptionally; because the 1300 series presented itself at the debut in 2001 with an impressive 144 hp. There were already similarly strong touring bikes at the time, but they were too sporty for the more leisurely tourists. the Yamaha however, it offered enough space for two travelers, great wind protection, maintenance-friendly cardan shaft and at the same time a surprising amount of driving dynamics. What was still missing for perfect tour happiness was an ABS and a sixth gear, because in the rather short geared fifth, the four-cylinder turns at a disruptively high level during rapid stretches of the motorway. 2003 came the FJR 1300 A – the “A” stands for ABS – and hey presto: 2300 pieces went over the counter, best sales year! A sixth gear was still missing, but that didn’t detract from the motorcycle’s popularity.

Yamaha trimmed the motorcycle further in the direction of travel suitability, donated standard cases and heated grips, improved the wind protection and the ABS. The parallel model FJR 1300 AS (2006 to 2010) with a semi-automatic gearbox is also very interesting, in which the gears can be shifted playfully without a clutch lever using either a foot rocker or a rocker switch on the handlebars. However, this version had a surcharge of 2000 euros and has only played a minor role in the previous success story of the FJR; because even with a conventional gearshift, the 1300 series offers top performance when traveling and is one of the most popular second-hand machines.

Yamaha’s touring flagship is generally considered to be completely stress-free from a technical point of view. If the usual check points (wear parts, traces of accidents, etc.) give no cause for complaint, you can access this machine almost without hesitation after the test drive. In the past it was. although from some owners. of the models up to year of construction 2005 complained about a ticking of the engine, whereupon Yamaha often changed the valve guides as a gesture of goodwill. However, this noise, which can only be heard by sharp ears, is usually not a technical problem. Rattling noises, on the other hand, indicate a worn timing chain tensioner that should then be replaced. An expensive repair can mean a defective shaft seal on the cardan output; because a change of this penny item requires a complete engine dismantling (around ten working hours). Leaks occur very rarely, but if you find oil at this point after the test drive, then stay away from this offer! Since the FJR is already well equipped, accessories only play a minor role in negotiations.

Market situation

Despite list prices that have been significantly reduced, most dealers find it difficult to get brand-new FJR 1300s. Second-hand, however, the Yamaha is a very welcome guest in the store who rarely lingers long. The demand for good used vehicles at fair prices at a medium level (see table) is higher than the corresponding supply. Machines without ABS (up to and including year of construction 2002) are not that easy to get started, however, because brake assist is now a good thing in the touring class. However, if you can do without it and find an FJR without brake assist in good original condition for around 5000 euros, the equivalent value is still correct. It is noticeable that daily registrations and used items as new are already on offer for less than 12,000 euros, so machines older than two years can only be sold in top condition and with useful accessories for over 10,000 euros.
