Do men really have a shoe trick too? If you look at the martial appearance of motorcycle sports boots, you would like to say: yes! In this laboratory and practical test, we took a closer look at whether the beautiful appearance also corresponds to the being.

Jorg Lohse

Let’s start this test with cheers for Europe. Not that the boots in this comparison are made on our continent – most of them, like so many other things in our lives, are mass-produced containers from the Far East. No, let’s put consumer protection in the foreground and say: It’s good that there are now a large number of standards that make shopping easier for us. Now you don’t come with crooked cucumbers or straight bananas that do not meet the norm and therefore do not make it into the supermarket display. This over-regulation of the market is of course officially prescribed nonsense and should be prohibited. A straight banana tastes like a crooked one. Period. But it’s stupid when something goes really wrong while riding a motorcycle and suddenly the bones are crooked and bent. Although we actually protected ourselves comprehensively with apparently decent clothes. Apparently there was more appearance than reality.

So it’s good when we get clear information in the store as to whether the motorcycle jacket or trousers, gloves or boots actually meet the tough protection requirements that are necessary in the worst case. The decisive standard for this test is the just updated DIN EN 13634: 2017 and bears the beautiful title “Protective shoes for motorcyclists. Requirements and test procedures “.

Before you pick up the phone in confusion or send an email to our stressed, but always good-humored and willing to provide information, editorial assistant: No, you don’t have to wear boots that meet this standard. Neither do certified gloves, jackets or pants. In Germany, motorcyclists still only have to wear a helmet, and even after that, it does not matter whether you wear a crease-free hat in accordance with ECE-R 22.05 or just a plastic-injected Chinese cracker in accordance with ISO Ho Chi Minh. So you don’t have to. But you can – keyword: It’s better.

At this point, however, it is also allowed to think outside the box – i.e. national borders. A European comparison shows that some countries think very differently in this regard. In Italy, for example, people are already making sure that the helmet complies with the current ECE, and in France it is now mandatory to wear gloves, for which the finger guards must comply with EN 13594.

Regulating madness or not, insurers could already point out that there are protective clothing suitable for motorcycling when regulating your scratches or wounds and, for example, cut benefits.

Painted enough in black – let’s take a positive look at the page and see to what extent the 13634 standard helps us when trying on shoes. If a motorcycle boot complies with this standard, it must also be marked accordingly. You shouldn’t be confused by any cryptic additional numbers and markings. Annual figures such as 2010 or 2015 only provide information about which version of the standard is based on the certification of the boot. Furthermore, additional information on the protection level can be made, usually as a column of numbers 1-1-1, 1-2-1, 2-2-1 and so on. In the order of digits, this information describes the abrasion and cut resistance as well as the transverse stiffness of the boot. And the rule of thumb is: two is better than one.

This assessment and evaluation is part of the compulsory program of EN 13634. Without compliance with the specified limit values according to Level 1 or 2, the boot may not be advertised or sold as a protective shoe suitable for motorcycling. In the interests of the consumer, health facts such as color fastness, chromium IV content and pH value are also checked according to the standard.

So far, optional test methods are used to assess the impact protection – i.e. the cushioning capacity for ankle and shin protectors. Although our test boots are all made very martially, only very few carry the label that these protective pads also meet the standard. Only with the specification IPA or IPS can you be sure that the protection for ankle (“Ankle”) or shin (“Shin”) is standardized.

Since this protection is actually essential for a modern sports boot, we examined all boots – whether certified or not – on the drop test bench and included the results in the evaluation under the “Safety” chapter. Only very few remain with an impact of ten joules below the five kilonewtons permitted by the standard. This as a note to the manufacturer: You may add more here in the future. Not for Europe, for us motorcyclists!

Fitting on asphalt: This is how MOTORRAD tests

Buying shoes is actually easier. A few steps in the store – and that’s good. But for solid comparison values you have to scrub a few kilometers. And drop a few weights on top of that.

Curving, up and down. The Col de l’Espigoulier near Marseille.

As every spring, the MOTORRAD service crew stuffs an editorial sprinter full to the brim with bikes, brand new clothes and equipment so that they can deliver a wide selection of purchase recommendations right on time for the start of the season. In 2018 we got off to a very sporty start: leather suits in the last issue, here now the sports boots for “all-day use”, and grippy gloves will follow in just 14 days.

And how made for comparative testing. Fast and slow alternating curves, hairpin bends, the whole thing uphill and downhill. It also has to be right with the driver’s equipment. Because when it tweaks and tweaks, some cornering fun is hailed. Dry exercises in various sizes round off the practical assessment of our ten test candidates.
