Like a good Hollywood blockbuster, Eicma 2013 had a varied script and an opulent cast list. Amongst the stars like the KTM 1290 Super Duke R, the BMW S 1000 R, Ducatis Monster 1200 or Yamaha’s three-cylinder MT-09 brought established forces like the touring queen BMW R 1200 RT or the mother of all radical naked bikes, the Kawasaki Z 1000, into the spotlight.

The national actors on this side of Ducati also played an important role in Milan. At the MV Agusta stand, the new three-cylinder supermoto Rivale 800 and the touring offshoot Turismo Veloce 800 vied for the favor of customers, while the luxury forge Bimota not only new owners, but also a new super sports car with the BB3 presented. Otherwise, however, the athletes’ faction in Milan played a minor role. The ultra-light and ultra-strong Ducati Superleggera is only suitable for the very wealthy audience, and the new Honda Fireblade in its old guise and without traction control has almost what it takes to become a tragic hero. On the other hand, the predominantly young trade fair audience presented itself refreshingly, pushing through the halls in a good mood despite the economic crisis. No wonder, because offers like the fleet MT-07 or the brand new entry-level Harleys are the stars in the youth sky.
Yamaha MT-07: The star of the Milan fair

Yamaha MT-07 shines with a great design.
Two cylinders, 75 hp, 68 Newton meters – and the star of the Milan trade fair. You have to get that done first. The MT-07 did it. Not least thanks to their great design and high quality workmanship. Nothing seems improvised or half-hearted, but consistently thought through to the end. Fine asymmetrical swing arm, bold underfloor exhaust, curved manifold routing, harmonious tank-bench line – no trace of honesty. And if you know the new crossplane three-cylinder from the big sister MT-09 and its lively character, you won’t have to worry about the lack of temperament of the row win. Especially not because the MT-07 can shine with two other top values. 182 kilograms with a full tank Yamaha on – that’s around 20 kilos less than a comparable motorized Kawa ER-6n. And the price will be less than 6000 euros.

Bimota BB3 has existed before

There was already a Bimota BB3 with a BMW engine.
However, it was a 60-horsepower single-cylinder racer. The new BB3 is at the other end of the performance spectrum: the four-cylinder unit of the BMW S 1000 RR, which is used for the classically designed BB3, produces a whopping 193 hp. Typical for Bimota: handcrafted chassis, finely processed carbon fiber laminate as cladding, tank hood and seat bench. Impressive: On the BB3, a swing arm milled from solid guides the rear wheel, and the swing arm mounts are also machined from aluminum blocks. A steel lattice tube construction serves as the frame, the main tubes of which have oval cross-sections. The new owners Marco Chiancianesi and Daniele Longoni, who earn their money with real estate, seem just as optimistic as the new importer Benny Wilbers. That’s why the price is a whopping 42,900 euros. There are almost two fully equipped BMW HP4s for this.

With the two externally identical models Street 500 and 750 has Harley-Davidson presented a completely new series. And a changed philosophy: away from the Harleys-are-big-and-expensive-image. The new engines – called “Revolution X” – are water-cooled V-Twins with a 60 degree cylinder angle. The 750, of which no performance data is known yet, will be available in Germany from the end of 2014, before that it will be launched in Portugal, Spain, Italy and India, where it is also built. In terms of price, the Street is said to be below the cheapest Sportster and above all to appeal to young people worldwide – especially in Asia.

With the S 1000 R BMW is also tackling the topic of naked bikes with the usual consistency. Consequently, the relationship to the S 1000 RR cannot be overlooked. Whether you like that is an open question. There are actually no doubts that the naked S 1000 will set standards in terms of driving dynamics, because it has everything in the equipment list that is good and expensive at BMW. Race ABS, traction control and semi-active chassis – if you want, you can buy all of this and you will almost certainly be rewarded with a chassis that sets standards in this class. The long development time and the meticulousness with which the Bavarians normally go to work speak for this. Presumably the same applies to the adaptation of the high-performance in-line quad, so that the S 1000 R has what it takes to become a volume model. Especially in view of the price: 12,800 euros is a word.

… You couldn’t be taller than 1.70 meters to look good on it. The new one is different: it is longer, heavier and more powerful, and in the S version it even reaches 145 hp. The seating position is also new and much better, because the handlebars move four centimeters up and closer to the driver, and the annoying lying on the tank is over. In addition, there is a strong design in which the typical monster look has been retained despite the water cooler. Incidentally, Ducati announced another novelty for the beginning of 2014. Now everyone is puzzling again …

At first glance, the little RC racers look like replicas of the world championship machines from the Moto3 class. Not only because of the typical orange paint, also because of the crisp, stylish cladding and sporty accessories. A fat WP fork springs in front, the strong aluminum swing arm controls a WP shock absorber. And there is even a programmable shift light on board as standard. The 125 delivers the class-standard 15 hp, but weighs only around 140 kilograms. Hardly any heavier is the handling king RC 390, whose single cylinder delivers a solid 44 hp. One MV Agusta with suitcases – who would have ever expected that? But it still takes a little while, because the Turismo Veloce will only be on the market in autumn 2014. The sports tourer with an emphasis on sport has a different frame compared to the Funbike rival, a new exhaust with square bags and a larger airbox. The Lusso version is particularly interesting – among other things with a semi-active chassis, shift assistant downwards, heated grips and two suitcases. Kawasaki’s tall nude looks pretty evil, appears much tidier and clearer, and has been technically improved in many areas.
The engine received more pressure, the chassis got better suspension elements and brakes, and the tank capacity increased to 17 liters. A special air duct should ensure an intoxicating engine sound. With 142 hp, the 1043 cm³ four-cylinder offers enough propulsion, the 12 195 euros, the Kawasaki for the new one Z 1000 inclusive ABS system calls are very appropriate.

Treat yourself to a quieter year in Hinckley: After the many innovations of recent years, the British will limit themselves to model updates in the coming season. The Thunderbird series is set up more broadly with the thick parallel twin through two further variants, both with 1.7 liters displacement. The CB 650 F and its fully disguised sister CBR are built in Thailand. With a longer stroke, the four-cylinder engines known from the CB, CBF and CBR 600 not only got more displacement, but also apparently different characteristics: less peak power, less peak torque, but more of it in the lower speed range. However, it is difficult to understand why it has been placed between all insurance classes with 87 hp. What achieved 102 PS with 600 cm³ should definitely be good for 95 PS with 649 cm³. Or even cheaper in the 78 hp class. The routing of the exhaust manifold was very spectacular.

“No, that’s not enough. A V-Strom cannot make the U-turn. When will Suzuki finally step on the gas again? ”Says editor Stefan Kaschel about the new Suzuki.
“The one and only”: Unfortunately, that is the motto of the 2014 model year, because apart from the V-Strom 1000 there was no new motorcycle on the Suzuki stand. And the V-Strom is not really new either, because with its 1000 engine it is based on its predecessor, which was discontinued years ago. After all: the engine has been extensively revised and now delivers its maximum torque at 4000 rpm, and the new V-Strom has everything from ABS to traction control on board. Nevertheless, it will not be easy for a 1000 in the 1200 travel enduro series. Suzuki knows that too and offers the V-Strom at an introductory price. 11,990 euros are a fair offer, and the German importer is also giving the first 100 customers the suitcases (890 euros) free of charge.
