The Yoshimura stainless steel silencer sold by Suzuki dealers in the “Edition Kit” for 579 euros impresses with its top sound and workmanship. Also popular: the IXIL twin-pipe muffler.

The first edition of the Suzuki Gladius was delivered without ABS and is difficult to sell today. The well-functioning anti-lock device has only been a standard feature since autumn 2009.

The cockpit is well equipped with a gear indicator (in the tachometer) and a timer (in the digital speedometer). Instead of a fuel gauge, there is only a two-stage fuel level warning lamp that warns you (too) early.

Instead of using stainless steel, which the SV 650 still had to offer, the Gladius uses simple, painted steel. The swing arm and chain tensioner also look just as simple.

Idiosyncratic design meets wonderful engine
Made cheaper, worse equipped, heavier, but not stronger – anyone who compares the Suzuki Gladius with its predecessor SV 650 on paper only will be disappointed. And do her wrong.

Instead of a stainless steel exhaust and LED taillight, only painted steel and conventional lighting technology; two kilos more on the ribs, but a 2.5 liter smaller tank; (at least initially) no ABS on board, but simpler spring elements and lots of plastic curtains that are supposed to fool the unsuspecting observer into an aluminum chassis – the Suzuki Gladius was not exactly showered with advance praise at its premiere in autumn 2008. Especially not if you consider it to be the successor to the SV 650.

It had sold more than 28,000 times in Germany alone since 1999, but its edge design was at least a bit old in terms of form. But the target groups for the old SV and the new Suzuki Gladius were completely different. While the SV 650 was a very grown-up motorcycle for experienced and rather conservative motorcyclists with slightly sporty ambitions, Suzuki’s squinted Gladius aimed at a significantly younger and preferably female audience.
The engine of the Suzuki Gladius is simply wonderful
And for this clientele, the Japanese made the already famous SV motor even more accessible through extensive modifications. The top performance and also the maximum torque remained unchanged with the Suzuki Gladius, but were now available much earlier and even better usable.
Incomplete ergonomics, overstrained shock absorbers – all of this is forgotten when you can spur the V-Twin on the country road. To cut a long story short: The Gladius ambience is mid-range at best, but the Suzuki Gladius’ glorious engine is still arguably the best drive you can buy in this class.

Market situation
There is no shortage of gladius, the range is plentiful and it turns up surprisingly often at retailers. Almost all machines have only a few kilometers on the clock and are well maintained. A Suzuki Gladius with over 15,000 kilometers is the very big exception, over 20,000 kilometers are extremely rare – the immature ergonomics and the uncomfortable bench take their toll. Most of the time there are well below 10,000 kilometers on the clock. First-hand babies with less than 5000 kilometers are also not that rare.
Models of the ABS-free first edition are potential grandfather clocks and can practically only be sold based on price. With a lot of luck, you can be there for around 4,000 euros. The difference with or without ABS makes up to 800 euros in used purchase practice, more than the former new price. While in the rest of the motorcycle world black is still the measure of color, the (female) Gladius customers particularly prefer the combination of white / red and are willing to pay a little more for it. If you buy a Suzuki Gladius from a dealer, you get the best goods for around 5300 euros.

The good news first: The Suzuki Gladius just doesn’t have any typical quirks. Not even atypical, at most a prematurely worn steering head bearing is annoying. Their mechanical reliability is excellent. Now for the bad news: According to the tenor from the (contract) workshops, the Gladius is a typical women’s motorcycle. And that means – five euros in the macho slogans or not – typical damage.
As there are: overturns and slight slips. But they can be concealed quite well by the various plastic panels, so be careful when viewing. Some women also tend to develop a particularly close relationship with the clutch – premature wear is not that rare. But there is also something very good about the women’s issue: The Suzuki Gladius is rarely made worse by modifications. Men and women alike tend to replace the cheap original exhaust with an accessory part – make sure that it is approved.
