In 2018, Suzuki resurrected a classic from a bygone era: the Suzuki Katana. Technically, the new Katana is based on the naked GSX-S 1000 bike. The new paintwork was presented in a virtual presentation at the beginning of 2020.

First presented in 1980 at the Intermot forerunner IFMA, the Suzuki GSX 1100 S Katana split the global motorcycle scene into two camps. In principle, there were two fundamental opinions about the new bike from the Japanese then and also later: “Wow, what a spectacular bike” or rather such statements as “Phew, not my case at all”. It is indisputable, however, that there are still a lot of fans and fans of the katana around the world who are looking forward to this comeback. And we’re pretty sure that Suzuki will win new fans with the new Katana.

Eye-catching optics meet proven technology

There have been rumors for a long time that Suzuki would like to bring a new Katana onto the market. Initially, prototypes that indicated a new katana were shown at various trade fairs. In particular, the concept bike shown at EICMA 2017 is very similar to the production model. Corresponding patent registrations also provided scope for speculation. At the latest, the announcement videos, which were already published in the run-up to INTERMOT on the official Suzuki YouTube page, ensured certainty. At the Cologne trade fair, the new Suzuki Katana was seen for the first time in its full glory, including most of the technical data.

Visually, the new Katana is similar to the concept bike presented at the last EICMA.

Similar to its legendary predecessor, the Italian design of the brand new katana should also be a topic of conversation. Suzuki himself speaks of a sporty-looking street motorcycle with the new model, which also has a touch of retro flair and modern styling. This modern note is supported by the LED lighting. The black exhaust is supposed to give the katana a certain dark touch. The rather short fender in the rear of the bike is also noticeable. For the engine, Suzuki relies on the drive that is already used in the GSX-S 1000 and is a further developed variant of the GSX-R 1000 engine from 2005. Accordingly, the liquid-cooled four-cylinder engine with 999 cm³ develops 150 hp at 10,000 rpm and 108 Nm at 9,500 rpm. There are also other parallels to the naked bike that is already available. Among other things, Suzuki has given the new Katana a three-stage traction control that can be switched off (modes: Sport, City, and Wet), LCD instruments, an anti-hopping clutch, various Suzuki assistance systems that are already common in other models, such as the so-called low- RPM-Assist, which improves idling control when starting off and driving slowly, as well as ABS.

The 43 mm fork comes from the Japanese manufacturer KYB and is fully adjustable. Suzuki has also already commented on the seat height: the Japanese specify 825 mm here. The wheelbase is 1,460 mm. For the tires, Suzuki opted for the dimensions 120/70 ZR 17 at the front and 190/50 ZR-17 at the rear. The Dunlop Sportmax Roadsport 2 will have been wound up. Suzuki is also equipping the new Katana with a 310 mm radial double disc brake and four-piston fixed calliper calipers from Brembo. Twelve liters will fit in the tank. When it comes to weight, Suzuki specifies 215 kg dry.

Katana available from 13,690 euros

For those who want something more individual, Suzuki also offers an accessory program for them. This allows various adjustments to be made to the bike. For example, the color of the seating can be adjusted.

Speaking of color: the new Suzuki Katana should initially only be painted “Metallic Mystic Silver” give. Shortly afterwards, Suzuki showed a black version of the katana. In a virtual presentation at the end of March 2020, Suzuki showed further new paint finishes, which are clearly different from the previously known color variants.
