Test: lined rainwear
Test: lined rainwear
Dry and warm in the rain?
Winter and precipitation ?? an extremely uncomfortable combination for motorcyclists. Unless they have an effective aid against cold and wet. For example, rainwear with a thermal lining.
Holger Hertneck
December 18, 2008
Everyone who has already put on an appropriate skin in the summer when it rains knows that rainwear also provides good protection from the wind and thus from the cold. After a few minutes you will be stewing in your own juice. With the low temperatures of the winter months, the insulation capacity of unlined rainwear is of course not sufficient. Clothing equipped with thermal inserts is also required here. MOTORRAD took a look around the market and got rain suits and trousers from all brands that could be delivered during the production period.

And for whom are the models particularly suitable? The lined rain suits are suitable for both the wet and cold trip to the office and for hardened motorcyclists who want to indulge in their hobby even on cold winter days. Pulled over the leather suit or functional clothing make it possible “Feed” even longer stages without the body cooling down. The rain pants with thermal lining, which were also tested, only make sense in combination with a waterproof, warm textile jacket. Scooter riders in particular use the practical and quickly put on trousers for their daily commute to work. But even motorcyclists who quickly cool down on their legs will be happy about the sometimes cozy, warm trousers.
Test criteria
A total of four lined rain suits and six lined rain pants face the MOTORRAD test according to the following criteria.
Watertightness (30 points): extremely important to prevent hypothermia. Because even the slightest traces of moisture on the skin, at low temperatures in combination with the airflow, remove an enormous amount of heat from the body within a very short time. For the practical test, a MOTORRAD employee had to be hosed down with a large water jet in a typical driving position. Suits and pants that kept dry for ten minutes get full marks. While all pants passed the test, the station wagons came from Germas and rev’it to failure phenomena. Cause: the diagonal zipper, which was not designed in a well thought-out way, in whose cover water collects when sitting. Sooner or later it seeps through the zipper in the area of the thigh and at the crotch. How it works despite the diagonal zipper is demonstrated by Louis, in which the cover strip is constructed in such a way that the water can drain away even when you are seated.
insulation (30 points): At temperatures just above zero, we went on a test drive with an undisguised Suzuki Bandit 1200. For a better assessment of the insulation capacity, the tester only wore jeans and a sweater under the lined rainwear. In order not to catch pneumonia, he did the pants test in combination with a warm functional jacket.
Fit (5 points): Arm and leg lengths as well as the body shape should be sufficiently long or wide so that the rainwear fits comfortably over the driver’s equipment. Common weak point: leg lengths that are too short. In the sitting position, the leg ends partially slide over the boots, which leads to cold spots and also lets rain water through. The combination and pants from Germas as well as the Rev’it suit – especially with thick undergarments – are negatively conspicuous. The Spidi-Gargoil pants, which fit well and have a high back, impress with the best fit.
Processing / equipment (15 points): How clean are the candidates and what features do they have? This includes protector equipment, pockets, reflective material, execution of all fasteners, width adjusters and much more. The station wagon comes with the prepared protector pockets polo Snowtrooper at the front, those for the pants Spidi Gargoil with protectors on the knees and hips and eye-catching reflective material.
handling (10 points): It should be possible to put on and take off with boots if it only gets too cold on the way. With a little practice and gathering the trouser legs, this works with all models. Also rated: the fixing of arm and leg ends, front fastening and waistband.
Driving behavior (10 points): The station wagons and trousers had to prove their driving ability on the test lap on country roads and autobahns (up to 150 km / h). When it comes to pants, Spidi Gargoil, who sits absolutely flutter-free and does not slip, scores full points for herself. The robust Polo Snowtrooper is ahead of the station wagons. All in all, all candidates were able to convince with their decent driving behavior.

MOTORRAD conclusion – feeling good is possible
A result that can be seen. The pants are especially convincing as absolutely waterproof and warm overcoats ?? especially the Ixs Jungle. The one-piece test winner, the Polo Snowtrooper, comes up with almost thermal combination qualities. The candidates from Germas and Rev ?? it show that diagonal zippers not only have advantages (easier entry), but also blatant disadvantages if they are incorrectly constructed. Water can penetrate the lower area of the front fastener. After all, the same applies to all pants and suits: The additional layer of clothing increases the feel-good factor immensely in the cold.
