For a long time the GoPro Hero HD 2 was the class leader and is probably one of the best-selling action cams on the market.
Easy
2/11
Every action cam has a hard time in dark passages, with only the HD Pro 1 mixing rough artifacts into the asphalt strip.

3/11
If you look directly into the sun, however, either the clouds or the hard shoulder lose their contours. The Hero 3 brings the most balanced picture.

The successor is the GoPro Hero 3. In the Silver Edition, an impressive 309 euros are called.
Easy
5/11
At 129 euros, the HD Pro 1 from SatChef is the cheapest camera in the test, and also offered the competition from GoPro with the included accessories.

6/11
In comparison, four action cams are between 129 euros and 309 euros.

7/11
When it comes to color reproduction, the cameras are not aligned either. The spectrum ranges from strong, dynamic yellowing in the Hero HD 2 and excessive saturation in the HD Pro 1 to flat, bleached colors and contours of the trees in the image of the FHD 170/5 from Telefunken. However, this is by far the closest thing to reality.
Easy
8/11
When the light gets worse, the level of detail also suffers. Landscapes blur and the sky disappears into a white nothing with all four cameras. The new GoPro also darkens significantly and the HD Pro 1 loses color depth.
Easy
9/11
All four subjects do a good job under optimal conditions. With the sun on the neck, the blue sky and clouds are clearly separated. The details in the road markings and small branches in the trees can also be made out.

10/11
As long as the sun does not smile directly into the lens, the automatic ISO control of most cameras regulates quite reliably, even if sometimes in very rough ways. Only the FHD 170/5 seems to be at the limit here.

The Telefunken FHD 170/5 is new on the market. For 249 euros it is by no means a bargain, but it does come with a wide range of accessories.

Actioncam comparison
They are now a dime a dozen: Action cams in all shapes, colors and variants. During a short trip, the new Telefunken FHD 170/5 and the HD Pro 1 were able to show what they have to offer against the GoPro Hero HD 2 and Hero 3 in the Silver Edition.

scope of delivery
The action cams market is growing steadily. In addition to the two established mini HD forges from GoPro and Rollei, there are always new models and concepts on the market – in highly flexible price segments. Two of the upstarts went on the test round together with the GoPro Hero HD 2 and the Silver Edition of the third series.
First of all: Safety First does not only apply to fans of the neon-colored warning vest cult. The most important rule when using motorcycle accessories is to secure them on the vehicle. Of course, this also applies to electronic toys, such as the action cams that have been tested. You should therefore double-check before every trip whether the technology actually works and, if necessary, secure it with duct tape, cable ties or other little helpers. Otherwise, the camera will eke out the rest of its life on a motorway shoulder or in the mountain range of the last pass exit – like our trusty Midland XTC 300, which was supposed to provide pictures of the test procedure and has not been seen since.

The Telefunken FHD 170/5 competes with the largest amount of luggage.
Before the four remaining cameras were allowed to compete against each other, they first had to unpack, view accessories and study the operating instructions. Thanks to its all-round carefree package, the FHD 170/5 from Telefunken was able to make an immediate impression. In addition to a waterproof housing, it comes with a remote control and a solid tube bracket for handlebars, crash bars or tubular frames for 249 euros. In addition, a suction cup and an adhesive holder are included in the scope of delivery, which should also be used on the bicycle helmet using Velcro straps. All brackets can also be expanded to include an upside-down bracket, so that the camera can be conveniently operated from above even when installed overhead. In addition, the FHD 170/5 is the only one in the test that has a 2 GB micro SD memory card and an HDMI cable ready ex works. Charging is carried out via a mini USB cable that can be connected to the mains using the vehicle or Euro plug supplied.
Easy
The GoPro Hero HD 2 does not have the chest strap shown in the motorsport equipment, but has a suction cup in its luggage.
The GoPro Hero HD 2 starts in the motorsport package for 269 euros and comes with a suction cup, a 3-way swivel arm and three flat and two curved adhesive pads for different surfaces. In addition, a deep and a high fastening clip are included so that there is sufficient ground clearance during assembly. In order to always be well equipped when it comes to sound, an open cover is also supplied in addition to the waterproof housing, so that nothing is shaky, the scope of delivery also includes a rubber buckle, which is supposed to protect against vibrations. A mini USB cable is also part of the package. However, you will look in vain for a memory card, remote control or power supply.
Easy
The GoPro Hero 3 in the Silver Edition has the smallest bundle of accessories.
In its third edition, the GoPro is much more spartan. In the tested Silver Edition, the only fastening material you get is a curved and a flat adhesive pad. The three-way arm, the two fastening clips and the two housing covers, which can be swapped between Hero 2 and Hero 3, have remained the same. There is also a USB cable and a rubber buckle in the luggage.
Easy
Everything you need is there: the HD Pro 1 doesn’t have as much as the FHD 170, but significantly more than the GoPros.
The box of the HD Pro 1 from SatChef contains a similar concept, if not the same. After all, the design is not only reminiscent of that of the GoPro at first glance – including all accessories. It brings plenty of that for 129 euros, which is the cheapest in the test. The HD Pro 1 not only has a 3-way swivel arm and a clip system with a flat and curved adhesive pad, but also a waterproof housing, a pipe holder and a bicycle helmet holder with a fabric strap, as from the GoPro range of accessories. The equipment is completed by a micro USB cable. It’s just a shame that the accessories cannot be combined with those of the GoPros despite their similarity.

After the batteries of the small HD forges have been charged, assembly begins. Because what is the basis for a beautiful picture? The motif and the image section. Because the relationship between the gray strip of asphalt and a look-in-the-air perspective can hardly be changed during the journey and anyone who remembers the first attempts at walking with his Ritsch-Ratsch camera knows what it’s about: the pictures with the cut heads, were seldom those for which there was particularly much recognition. Such mishaps can be nipped in the bud with a display – if the brackets offer enough leeway.
Thanks to the 1.5 ‘‘ TFT screen and an extensive range of brackets, the little one from Telefunken provides the best conditions to score points in this discipline as well. No sooner said than done: the suction cup holds, the pipe bracket does its job and with the upside-down bracket, the TV does not have to be screwed to the living room ceiling when you watch it afterwards. A nice feature: the possibility of screwing the camera to a standard photo tripod via the tripod mount. When aligning with the adhesive pad, however, you encounter the first obstacles. The arm is simply too short, which is why the FHD 170/5 with the one-way arm can only be properly attached to the side surfaces.
The compact competitors can do that better. All three cameras are based on the same mounting concept. An optionally flat or curved foot with an adhesive pad is connected to the camera housing via a 3-way swivel arm. This means that the action cam can be mounted in front, back, above, below – almost anywhere, so that the image section fits. On the HD Pro 1, it is checked in the 1.5 ‘‘ LC display on the back. A tube bracket is included for holding the handlebars, which can be easily tightened with plastic wing nuts. Wing nut-like bolts with plastic handles are also used on the 3-way arm, but the plastic is a bit careless and thin.
This is where the GoPros can score. The high-quality brackets leave little to be desired during assembly and thanks to the five adhesive pads of the GoPro Hero HD 2, you can also change perspective on longer trips. What is missing, however, is a pipe bracket. With the GoPros, these are only available in other set combinations or directly in the range of accessories. The GoPro can be easily and safely brought into position thanks to the flat and high feet. In order to find the right image section, however, you either have to laboriously test film or buy a clip-on screen from an accessory store, which makes the camera significantly larger. However, if you use your camera regularly, you will quickly get a feel for what can be seen in the picture.
The Hero 3 can also be attached to the bike using the same options. In the standard package of the Silver Edition there are only two adhesive pads. For this, the Hero 3 with its integrated WiFi interface allows the image to be conveniently streamed to the smartphone or tablet via a free app. The clip-on screen of the HD 2 also fits.
After everything was in place, we went out onto the street so that the action cams could finally show what was hidden under the plastic. The first unexpected endurance test was the highway drive in the direction of the Swabian Alb, which our Midland did not survive thanks to inadequate security, which gave it an eternal grave on the hard shoulder. The test candidates, on the other hand, mastered this task without any problems: the adhesives hold. very nice!

Thanks to the 1.5 ” display, the right position can be found straight away.
Preparation is everything. Even when filming with an action cam. The most important settings of the camera should of course be made before driving. It borders on a miracle when someone drives out of a left turn while they have just changed the recording mode and formatted the memory card. The FHD 170/5 is not that far away from that. With the included remote control, at least video and photo recordings can be conveniently started and stopped from the handlebars. Anyone who prefers to work directly can operate the sliding mechanism on the housing, but then have to forego taking photos.
If you want more, you have to dig deeper. So take the camera out of the case and into the menu. You will be received there from three possibilities: The choice between the sport and the car recording mode, the playback function and the settings. The image size, frame rate and resolution, for example, can then be configured there.

The many buttons on the HD Pro 1 take getting used to. Sometimes less is more.
True to the motto “A lot helps a lot”, the HD Pro 1 could at least theoretically be configured while driving. All six buttons on top of the camera can be operated inside and outside the housing and therefore do not exactly contribute to the clarity. Sometimes less is more.
The menu navigation itself, on the other hand, is simple and clear. All system, photo, video and playback settings can be made in the respective menu item – only the system time and date do not want to say goodbye to the video track in the test, even after repeated attempts.
manufacturer
Two handles look minimalist and they are. Operation requires practice. A third one with the Hero 3 only helps to a limited extent. Especially since it only uses the wifi function.
The GoPro Hero HD 2 works with and without a housing with just two buttons. At the top for triggering and selecting, at the front for switching on / off and navigating through the menu. So you could theoretically adjust the camera setting here while driving. However, this is not promising, because the small black and white display is in the front next to the lens and is mainly characterized by small pictograms and abbreviations.
The big silver sister follows the same, colorless menu navigation. The buttons are much larger and easier to use. But only without the housing. In the transparent box you have to press the same small buttons with which the Hero HD 2 competes. In addition, the Hero 3 has a small, third button on the side, which can be used to conveniently switch the WiFi function on and off.

The direct comparison: The Hero 3 copes best with direct backlight.
A picture is worth a thousand words. Especially in full HD. Not only for this reason it is now time to watch the video.
Here the Telefunken shows its first weaknesses. Backlit clouds and sky blur in an overexposed mash. On the other hand, when the lighting conditions change, it readjusts very finely and shines with the most lifelike color rendering. However, the image could be a little more contrasty, especially when driving fast, in order to better show fine details such as bushes and branches.
The HD Pro 1 also has to struggle with backlighting. The sky and clouds remain recognizable, but dark areas of the image are drowning. It is similar with the lifelike reproduction of colors. Especially in fast-paced passages, lush green meadows begin to blur into muddy green artificial turf. The level of detail suffers as a result. Even in reasonable lighting conditions. When these change quickly, electronics help. The automatic ISO controls, however, in very rough steps.
Easy
Reality can look so different: One time yellow like photos from grandma’s times and then again barren and gray.
When the Hero 3’s sun shines into the lens, it too can easily stumble. However, both clouds and hard shoulder remain visible. The predecessor already has more problems and simply draws large circles around the celestial body. The details on the side stripes are largely retained on both. As is typical for GoPro, the colors are very yellow, although the image of the Hero 3 is much less distorted. The HD 2, on the other hand, is the most fluid when it comes to changing lighting conditions. However, both cameras do not save on details and deliver images rich in contours in almost all situations.

HD Pro 1
The HD Pro 1 does not do a bad job without airs, but with a lot of buttons and delivers very decent pictures under good conditions. The accessories are sufficient and quite appropriate for the price of 129 euros.
Telefunken FHD 170/5
The FHD 170/5 offers everything the action cam novice needs to get started right away. For 249 euros you get a full-fledged action cam with memory card, remote control and brackets for almost every situation in life that delivers good pictures. There is hardly anything left to be desired.
GoPro Hero HD 2
The somewhat dusty GoPro can still keep up well in the test field. Last but not least, thanks to the orgy of accessories, which is atypical for GoPro. For still 269 euros you could expect a little more from the picture, which looks dynamic but anything but real due to the colors.
GoPro Hero 3 Silver Edition
The Hero 3 delivers the best picture by far, under good and bad conditions. The contours are right, the details are pronounced and the color fidelity is very good for action cam conditions. At 309 euros, this has its price, which can be increased almost immeasurably in the range of accessories.
