Winter underwear for every budget
As is well known, there is no such thing as bad weather, just wrong clothing. When properly dressed, it stays cozy and warm under the station wagon even in the freezing cold.
Fabian Dresler
December 09, 2019
We have subjected motorcycle winter underwear for every budget to a MOTORCYCLE check for you. In addition to normal thermal clothing, heated underwear is trendy. But, like other functional underwear, it must be sensibly integrated into the multi-layer system. The greatest enemy of motorcyclists is the head wind, which slowly but surely pushes cold through the neck, wrists and trouser legs into the station wagon. Only overlapping clothing will help on these cold bridges. Hands and feet are also particularly at risk and have to be packed extra thickly.
The individual layers
The perfect winter outfit follows the good old onion principle. Several thin layers on top of each other store body heat better than the thickest wool sweater thanks to the air in between. However, there shouldn’t be too many layers on the motorcycle so that freedom of movement is always guaranteed.
Baselayer: The base layer worn directly on the skin, also known as a base layer, should fit as tightly as possible and not get soaked when sweating, but transport the liquid to the outside. A wet base layer would provide additional cooling instead of heat through evaporation – at least in principle.
Midlayer: The middle layer worn over it must be breathable, but must not allow cold air to penetrate, especially in the areas in the airstream. Functional clothing with a windproof membrane is the first choice here. If the second layer is also tight, the heat can be effectively retained on the body. Heated clothing only really makes sense up to this shift. The closer to the body it can give off its heat, the better. As an outer layer, a textile combination with a membrane is ideal, with which jacket and trousers can be connected to one another.
Baselayer: Alpinestars Ride Tech Winter
The first layer of the Italians keeps you warm despite the very low material thickness and closes tightly on all potential cold bridges. The underwear also wicks sweat away without getting wet. We have nothing to complain about.
The functional underwear is made of polyester, polyamide and elastane. They are available in sizes XS to XXL
Price: shirt 69.95 euros, pants 64.95 euros
Positive: thin material that keeps you very warm
Negative: tight cuffs against cold spots
Baselayer: Fastway Thermo
Louis offers its own brand of winter underwear at particularly good prices. The material is very elastic, but the sleeves and legs are so long that they can be particularly annoying at the ankles of tight boots. Price-performance ratio fits.
The functional underwear is made of polyester and elastane. They are available in sizes S to XXL
Price: shirt 9.99 euros, pants 9.99 euros
Positive: comfortable to wear
Negative: extremely long sleeves and legs, wrinkles
Baselayer: Sixs Merino
Merino wool is particularly popular in winter. Its fine yarn hardly scratches the skin and – like all types of wool – it is antibacterial. The development of body odors is naturally inhibited. Sixs merino underwear is extremely comfortable to wear. Sleeves and leg lengths are very short, so the layers worn over them have to cover these cold spots. The shirt is also optionally available with a high collar that fits snugly around the neck.
The underwear set consists of merino wool, polypropylene, polyamide, elastane and carbon fiber and is available in sizes S to 3XL.
Price: shirt from 89.95 euros, pants 89.95 euros
Positive: very tight-fitting and thin, different collars available
Cons: short sleeves and legs
Baselayer: Held 3D skin warm
The traditional German supplier relies on the Nilit Heat fiber made of nylon and coffee-activated carbon for the first layer. The underwear is very elastic and particularly resistant to moisture. Despite the tight fit, it is barely noticeable. Take care when tightening, the thin material can also tear.
The functional underwear is made of Nilit Heat and available in sizes XS to 3XL.
Price: shirt 64.95 euros, pants 49.95 euros
Positive: thin material, good thermal insulation
Cons: tight, comfortable fit
Baselayer: warmX heated underwear
The heated underwear from Apolda in Thuringia has woven, silver-plated threads that form a textile circuit. The patented principle enables imperceptible heating zones. Three heating levels can be selected on the batteries. The integrated battery pouches prevent annoying cable clutter, but it is practically impossible to change the heat output without laboriously removing it. The optionally available extension cable (19 euros) is therefore a sensible investment, because it can be used to stow the battery in a bag. The underwear is easy to machine wash.
The heated underwear is made of cotton, acrylic, elastane and silver. Sizes: women 36-54, shirt men 44-62, trousers uni S-XXL.
Price: shirt 1/4 arm from 129.00 euros, pants 269.00 euros (plus batteries 129.00 euros)
Heating time at max.heating output *: k. A..
Heating capacity *: k. A..
Positive: good heat effect, no wires noticeable
Negative: The heating zone on the shirt is very small – only warms the kidney area
Baselayer: Heizteufel heated underwear
Heizteufel’s underwear is equipped with sewn-in heating mats on the chest, back and arms. The heating output, which only radiates inwards, is good, but would be even more effective if the seat was narrower. Therefore – if possible – choose one size smaller. The machine-washable synthetic fiber is comfortable to wear, but tends to get soaked if you sweat heavily. Battery pockets are not integrated directly into the underwear.
The heated underwear is made of viscose and polyester and is available in sizes S to XXL (men and women).
Price: shirt (6 heating zones) 190.00 euros, pants 180.00 euros (batteries from 130.00 euros)
Heating time at max.heating output *: shirt 1.15 hours, pants 3 hours.
Heating capacity *: Shirt 28 W (battery), up to 46 W (on-board power); Pants 21 W (battery), 34 W (on-board power)
Positive: large heating zones that only give off heat to the inside
Cons: loose fit
Baselayer: FLM with Thermolite 1.0
The baselayer from the polo house brand FLM consists of a mix of warming material and stretch zones on the arms and legs. It feels pleasantly soft on the skin. But it is too far for the first shift. Tight functional underwear fits underneath without any problems, but a midlayer only fits with difficulty.
The FLM functional underwear is made of polyester, the shirt is available in sizes S to 4XL, the trousers in S to 3XL.
Price: shirt 34.99 euros, pants 34.99 euros
Positive: pleasantly soft inner material
Cons: very loose fit
Product overview: baselayer
Midlayer: Forcefield Tornado Advance
The membrane on the front effectively blocks the cold airflow. Thanks to its tight fit, this midlayer also insulates body heat very well. The collar is very wide so that the cold can penetrate the neck. An additional neck warmer that extends further down is necessary. In contrast, the cuffs on the wrists and ankles are comfortably tight. The Forcefield underwear is comfortable to wear even under a tight leather suit. Again, leather is not a good idea in winter.
The forcefield midlayer is polyester and available in sizes XS to XXL.
Price: shirt 54.95 euros, pants 44.95 euros
Positive: windproof front area, low material thickness
Negative: a wide collar is a potential cold bridge
Midlayer: FLM quilted inner jacket Modular 1.0
Very warm due to the light lining, but air-permeable and therefore only recommended under absolutely windproof suits in extreme cold. Practical: it can be buttoned into most polo jackets as an additional thermal lining via the clip-in system.
The FLM quilted inner jacket Modular 1.0 is made of polyester and is available in sizes M to 4XL.
Price: 59.99 euros
Positive: jacket can also be worn separately, very light
Negative: not windproof
Midlayer: Sixs Windstopper
The Sixs underwear keeps what its name promises: namely the wind outside. The top is available as a long-sleeved shirt or as a vest. The material can scratch the neck uncomfortably in the long run. Overall, this second layer is very supple and also fits under tight suits.
Material: polyester, polypropylene, elastane and carbon fiber. It is available in sizes XS to 3XL.
Price: waistcoat 99.95 euros, shirt 114.95 euros, pants 109.95 euros
Positive: windproof front area, tight cuffs
Negative: permanently scratches the neck area
Midlayer: Klan-e heated jacket + pants
Heatable middle layer, the heat output of which can be adjusted in four stages The thin cuffs close very well at the wrists and ankles, and thanks to the thumb loops, everything stays where it belongs under the gloves. If the knee is at an acute angle, the heating wires and plugs are clearly noticeable in the pants and can be a nuisance. It is better to try it out on the motorcycle before buying it. The heat emission of the second layer is generally less noticeable than with a heated base layer. Washable by hand only.
The Klan-e-Kombi is made of polyester and available in sizes XXS to 4XL.
Price: jacket 159.95 euros, pants 129.95 euros (plus batteries from 89.95 euros)
Heating time at max.heating output *: 12 V 1.5 hours, 7.4 V 2.25 hours.
Heating capacity *: 18 W at 7.4 V, 50 W at 12 V.
Positive: thumb loops for a secure fit on the wrist, long cuffs on the pants that fit nicely into the boots
Negative: Wires clearly noticeable, especially on the knee, rather moderate heating effect
Midlayer: Gerbing heated kidney belt
Very robust kidney belt with a narrow heating zone in the back area. In order to regulate the heating power on the small battery (four levels), it must be taken out of the zipper compartment – real fiddling with gloves. The Gerbing kidney belt is also a bit too big for slim people.
Sizes: Uni
Price: 118.90 euros including battery
Heating time at max.heating output *: 2 hours
Heating capacity *: 7.7 watts
Positive: very thin, stable material
Negative: small heating zone, poor heat regulation
Midlayer: Thermobelt heated kidney belt
This kidney belt is very warm even without the heating function. In addition, the heating zone extends over the entire rear area. The heating power is easy to regulate in three stages, and the small battery is hardly a problem. The universal size offers a suitable setting for every body shape.
Sizes: Uni
Price: 98.90 euros including battery
Heating time at max.heating output *: 2 hours
Heating capacity *: 44 degrees Celsius
Positive: large heating zone
Cons: thermoregulation easily accessible
Product overview: midlayer
Hands: Forcefield Tornado Advance
Unlined and therefore very thin undergloves. With the membrane on the outer hand, they are also suitable for use under leather sports gloves. The thermal effect is decent, but on long tours the cold can penetrate between the fingers. The thin material of the palm is sensitive. It is best to be careful not to get caught on Velcro fasteners.
Material: polyester
Sizes: S – XL
Price: 19.95 euros
Positive: windproof on the outside, very thin
Negative: inside seams noticeable
Hands: Gerbing L12
The entire back of the hand of these undergloves is heated. That is why they are very thick and hardly ever
to get under well-fitting outer gloves. Power can be supplied from the vehicle battery without optional accessories. The heating power is great and can be set in four stages.
Material: Cordura, neoprene
Sizes: XS – 3XL
Price: 98.90 euros including on-board power supply (batteries 118.90 euros)
Heating time at max.heating output *: 2.25 hours.
Heating capacity *: 27 watts
Positive: the entire back of the hand is heated
Negative: applies very thickly
Hands: Rextex Extreme Glove
The Extreme Glove can also only be operated electrically via the vehicle battery as standard. The heating zones between the fingers, which can be adjusted in four stages, enable a low material thickness. The inner gloves are very elastic and no thicker than the unheated competition. The heating effect is small.
Material: polyester, spandex
Sizes: S – XXL
Price: 98.90 euros including on-board power supply (batteries 118.90 euros)
Heating time at max.heating output *: 2.25 hours.
Heating capacity *: 20 watts
Pros: thin, comfortable to wear
Negative: small heating zone
Hands: Orina Tesla
In contrast to the heated grips, Orina gloves warm the back of the hand. The heating zone extends over the entire area and fingers. The batteries are stowed in the cuff. Even when switched off, the gloves are pleasantly warm thanks to the thick lining and membrane. The heating output can be adjusted in three stages. An ankle protector ensures good security.
Material: polyamide, leather, amara
Sizes: S – XXL
Price: 229.80 euros including batteries
Heating time at max.heating output *: 2 hours.
Heating capacity *: 16 watts
Positive: ankle protector
Negative: The outer hand is completely and strongly heated
Hands: Klan-e Infinity 3.0
As with Orina, the batteries are stowed in the cuff. The heating zone of the waterproof and windproof gloves extends over the palm and can be adjusted in four stages. Unfortunately, the heating wires are clearly noticeable when you grip the vehicle with force, as well as when braking and using the clutch. This can become uncomfortable in the long run. The heat output itself is okay, but not outstanding. The screen tip material on the index fingers is very practical, with which motorcycle sat navs and even smartphones can be operated without having to take off your gloves in the cold.
Material: leather-synthetic fiber mix
Sizes: XS – 3XL
Price: 139.95 euros (plus batteries from 99.95 euros)
Heating time at max.heating output *: 12 V 2 hours, 7.4 V 2.5 hours.
Heating capacity *: 12 V 37 W, 7.4 V 15 W.
Positive: screen tip for smartphone operation
Negative: heating wires noticeable
Product overview: gloves
Feet: Alpinestars Thermal Tech Socks
Cotton socks are still one of the best measures against cold feet. Mainly because heating zones are difficult to integrate here without sacrificing comfort. The Alpinestars stockings reach below the knee so that the cuffs do not interfere even in high winter boots. They are very tight around the calves – they don’t fit everyone.
Material: cotton, polyamide, nylon, synthetic fibers
Sizes: S – XXL
Price: 19.95 euros
Pros: thick material on the front
Cons: tight calf
Feet: Klan-e Heated Socks
The forefoot is warmed by built-in heating wires. There is a pocket for the battery so that it is barely noticeable if the boots are not too high. Just try it out. In particularly tight boots (which are not recommended in winter anyway), however, the heating wires can disturb sensitive wearers.
Material: cotton
Sizes: 37–48
Price: 89.95 euros (plus batteries from 99.95 euros)
Heating time at max.heating output *: 12 V 2.25 hours, 7.4 V 3 hours.
Heating capacity *: 12 V 20 W, 7.4 V 8 W.
Pros: Heated forefoot
Negative: quite short, no longer usable below the station wagon
Feet: Hotronic Power Plus S4
These heated insoles are individually cut to the right size. The large batteries can be attached directly to the boot. They are annoying with tight trousers and should be put in a bag using an extension cable (from 14.90 euros). Don’t worry, the highest of the four heat levels is given as 78 degrees Celsius, but it’s not boiling hot, but pleasantly warm.
Sizes: Uni
Price: 229.90 euros including batteries
Heating time at max.heating power: 2.5 hours.
Heating capacity: 78 degrees Celsius
Positive: good heating output, adjustable even when wearing
Cons: Large batteries, cables can be a problem in the boot
Feet: Thermosoles Classic
The battery is integrated into the soles, which means that they do not need any cables. In order to switch the thermosoles on and off or to charge them, they must be removed from the shoe. A thermostat keeps the temperature of the heating zone on the forefoot constant between 31 and 41 degrees. A manual setting of the heating power is not possible, but also not necessary.
Sizes: S – XXL
Price: 98.90 euros including batteries
Heating time at max.heating power: 2 hours.
Heating capacity: 41 degrees Celsius
Positive: no annoying cables
Negative: the sole cannot be adjusted from the outside
Head: Forcefield Tornado Advance Neck Warmer
Fully windproof neck warmer that covers the area down to the shoulders and chest. Since the cut is very wide, it is difficult to fiddle under the helmet, can slip down and fold under the collar. Our tip: Be sure to test it with the rest of your clothing.
Material: polyester
Sizes: Uni
Price: 19.95 euros
Positive: windproof membrane all around
Negative: wide cut
Head: Alpinestars Tech neck warmer
Fluffy and easy to wear under the helmet. However, the neck warmer does not provide sufficient protection against the wind in the long term and only minimally overlaps the chest and neck. But it fits under jackets with a tight collar.
Material: polyamide, polyester
Sizes: Uni
Price: 19.95 euros
Positive: tight fitting (goes under the helmet), comfortable inner lining
Negative: little overlap, not windproof
Head: Reus Gore-Windstopper balaclava 1.0
Equipped with a membrane in the neck area and additionally lined with warmth, very thin and elastic on the head. The polo balaclava completely eliminates the cold bridge in the neck area. Only the eye area remains free and the view is not restricted when seated correctly. Ideally suited for an extended winter tour.
Material: polyester
Sizes: Uni
Price: 34.99 euros
Positive: generous overlap, windproof membrane on the neck
Negative: no restriction of the view
Head: Reusch Gore-Windstopper Neck Warmer 1.0
In jackets with a wide collar, it prevents the wind from penetrating very well. The width can be precisely adjusted using Velcro strips. However, the upper part of the neck remains free and has to be packed in some other way, for example with a balaclava. The neck warmer does not have to be taken off during breaks.
Material: polyester
Sizes: S – L
Price: 29.99 euros
Positive: windproof, comfortable inner lining
Cons: does not completely cover the neck
