The 13.5 millimeter thick bolt, the housing and the load-bearing parts of the locking mechanism are made of specially hardened steel. This ensures mechanical security. In addition, the SmartX 8078 offers an alarm function with at least 100 dB for 15 seconds as well as a location storage from the last time the motorcycle was parked.

But first to the castle itself. Mounted on the motorcycle, it detects vibrations and the smallest movements in all three dimensions and triggers the alarm.
Doesn’t fit every brake
However, the massive lock body does not fit every brake system. With 17-inch rims, it gets really tight with 320 discs. The SmartX does not want to fit on a 16-inch rim with 310 discs. The hole pattern of the brake discs also limits the installation options. So be sure to try it out on your own motorcycle before buying.

Extremely long battery life
An automatic detection system, which detects whether the lock is mounted on a brake disc or not, allows the 14 x 6 x 4 cm large and almost 900 g heavy lock to be transported in the closed state without the alarm being activated. A transport bag is included in the scope of delivery.
This must be done before the first use Abus SmartX must first be charged via the USB-C connection. Completely charged, the SmartX showed a charge level of 100% even after two weeks with numerous test openings and closings. Abus itself specifies a battery life of six to eight weeks. If the energy supply is running low, the lock uses an app to remind you in several stages to recharge.
Reliable control via app

Control center and brain is a special smartphone app (iOS and Android). Before using the lock for the first time, it must be registered on the app with the enclosed keycard using a QR code. If necessary, electronic access authorizations can be set up on different smartphones. Only then can you use the app to open and close the lock and monitor the location and charge status. All actions are acknowledged by a signal tone or an LED display. The range of the Bluetooth connection can be continuously regulated. There is a maximum of around 15 meters. The establishment of contact works reliably as long as Bluetooth communication is activated on the smartphone. If you approach the vehicle and start the app, the lock can be opened immediately by touching the corresponding screen symbol.
The Abus lock is available in different colors at prices from 220 euros.
Plus: mechanical security, alarm function, reliable control via app, battery life
Minus: compatibility
MOTORCYCLE Rating: four out of five stars
Conclusion
The Abus lock, which is available in different colors from around 220 euros, makes a solid impression, it is easy to use via the app and the sensitivity of the alarm function is practical. A good choice to deter casual thieves. However, professionals will not be deterred by the alarm function. And: nothing works without electricity in the cell phone or the lock.
