Triumph joins the BSB: Street Triple becomes a supersport race bike

Street Triple becomes a supersport race bike
It is official. Triumph joins the British BSB in 2021. In the Supersport category, the manufacturer will support the PTR team led by team boss Simon Buckmaster and bring the 765 triple onto the racetrack. The focus is on the Supersport World Cup in 2022.

Dorna as the organizer of the Supersport World Championship is already discussing new engine concepts for the World Cup from 2022. Ducati will also test a V2 model in the BSB. Now Triumph is also starting with a three-cylinder.
The basis for the race bike is the current Street Triple, i.e. a naked bike and not a super athlete. The Chinese battery manufacturer Dynavolt will be the team sponsor. Whether there is already a gang for an upcoming one Triumph electric model be knotted?

Steve Sargent, Chief Product Officer at Triumph, reveals in an interview why Triumph is starting with a converted naked bike and what the new Triumph SSP bikes will look like.
Steve Higgs, BSB Series Director and jointly responsible for the approval of the 765 engine in the BSB, also gives an insight into the future of this “new” class.
MOTORCYCLE: Steve, Triumph is already an engine supplier for the Moto2 World Championship. For this, the 765 engine has been extensively revised and rotates up to 14,000 rpm. What will the engine look like in the Supersport class??
Steve Sargent: The basis is of course that Street Triple Engine, but we will also transfer many parts of the Moto2 engine. I am convinced that we can put together a package for the class that will enable us to be competitive.
triumph
MOTORRAD: And what will this package look like??
Steve Sargent: We will mount a well-known fairing on the base of the Street Triple: The one of the limited Daytona 765 Moto2.
MOTORCYCLE: So the Daytona is coming back?
Steve Sargent: No, definitely not. We said at the time that the Daytona would be in this form after the limited edition and it will stay that way. Of course, I can’t say anything about any other plans.
MOTORRAD: Are there any other commitments planned in addition to the SSP, for example in road racing??
Steve Sargent: We have of course a close connection to the TT and have already celebrated very emotional successes there. Whether a commitment is made here depends above all on whether the regulations of the Supersport class are also adapted there. So I wouldn’t rule that out.
MOTORRAD: Stuart, this year you are the first to venture with the BSB to test the opening of the SSP category for larger displacements and are now faced with the task of integrating the larger displacement three-cylinder. How will that be possible?
Stuart Higgs: Electronics make a lot possible today. In the past we could only limit the speed or adjust the weight of individual bikes, now there are many more starting points. I believe it is extremely important to allow different engine concepts in the class to make them more versatile and attractive. That is why we will control the balancing as best as possible using the standardized electronics in the BSB. After triumph, we would like to win more manufacturers for the championship.
MOTORCYCLE: It is long overdue to adapt the Supersport class to the market. How will the project in Great Britain affect other national championships and the World Cup?
Stuart Higgs: We are of course in contact with the FIM. The BSB 2021 is a test run for the WSSP 2022 and of course the other promoters of the national championships should follow suit.
MOTORCYCLE: It is a first that a naked bike is being used as an SSP base with the Street Triple. Could this become a model for other manufacturers?
Stuart Higgs: It’s too early to say anything concrete here, but Ducati, for example, has already shown a V2 bike close to the SSP. It is important that we enliven the class by not restricting it to the 600 four-cylinder concept. I think that’s what everyone wants. The people on TV want to see diversity.
Barni Racing
MOTORCYCLE: The currently dominant SSP bike, the Yamaha R6, is no longer homologated and is being phased out. Is the opening of the regulations the end of the 600 four-cylinder in racing?
Stuart Higgs: No, that is a question for manufacturers. However, it seems that the demand for this concept is shrinking, so new sections have to be opened up. We have to continue on this path in racing and thus define the future of the sport.

New engine and displacement concepts would make the super sports class more attractive?

Yes, the class needs to be more open.
No, super sports cars are 600cc four-cylinder – that’s that.
