For Euro 5, the 1200 twin has to wear significantly larger cats, which Triumph hides in a masterly manner as is well known.

In contrast to the Showa-Ohlins-dampened and Brembo-braked Thruxton, the first generation of the Speed Twin did not manage to bring the musky performance completely onto the road. Until now.

Like the new Speed Triple 1200 RS, Triumph soles the new Speed Twin with the Semislicks Racetec RR from Metzeler. With an air temperature of 27 degrees, dry and sunshine, the rubbers conjure up phenomenal grip on the rough roads of Portugal.

In 2021, the Speed Twin’s power plant will be housed in a worthy chassis. The new upside-down fork from Marzocchi is noticeably tighter than the telescopic fork with bellows from the previous year.

Despite the rev counter: The sound is a good indicator of whether you are driving in the correct rev range. Rule of thumb: if it sounds right, it pushes right.

The 1200 twin still has a fist behind its ears: between 3,000 and 7,000 tours, 100 Newton meters of torque is the lowest value, between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm the twin shovels around 110 into the transmission, the maximum 112 Nm come at 4,250 tours a little earlier.

You still have to do without the lean angle-sensitive systems: you will look in vain for a 6-axis IMU in the Speed Twin. This does not stand in the way of the proper coordination of the existing ABS and traction control.

The traction control is matched to the activated driving mode and can be deactivated. The injection mappings have also been revised: the criticized load changes and the harsh throttle response are a thing of the past.

In terms of price, the new Speed Twin is a mellow 300 euros above the 2020 model. In view of the increased performance that is offered, this is completely okay.

Triumph Speed Twin: More chassis for more motorcycle
Driving report Triumph Speed Twin 2021
More speed for the twin with the new chassis
In contrast to the Thruxton R, the first Speed Twin could not completely convince in terms of chassis and brakes. That changed in 2021. The driving report underlines that thickly.

2016. Presentation Triumph Thruxton R. When asked what the first trip was like, the chronicler replies: “There’s a superbike handlebar on it and I sign right away!” Waiting was Triumph’s answer back then. 2019: Triumph brings the “Thruxton with handlebar” and calls them Speed Twin. But in contrast to the Showa-Ohlins-damped and Brembo-braked Thruxton, the first generation of the Speed twin not to bring the messy performance completely onto the road.
Chassis befitting
For the comprehensive update to Euro 5, Triumph worked intensively on the chassis: It seems to have succeeded. In 2021, the Speed Twin’s power plant will be housed in a worthy chassis. The new upside-down fork from Marzocchi is noticeably tighter than the telescopic fork with bellows from the previous year. It is true that uneven roads reach the driver with fewer filters, transparency and feedback from the bike are welcome and clearer to the same extent. The stability in further radii is increased, the track is kept steadfast. This is how sporty, befitting chassis work. Triumph opens a new chapter when it comes to deceleration: M50 monobloc with radial screw connection instead of axial P4 calipers. In summary: braking performance is excellent, the pressure point fits. D.A comparison with the significantly sharper Thruxton RS the Speed Twin doesn’t need to fear when anchoring.
Tires show the way
Like the Speed Triple 1200 RS, Triumph soles the new Speed Twin with the Semislicks Racetec RR from Metzeler. With an air temperature of 27 degrees (dry, sunshine), the rubbers conjure up phenomenal grip on the rough roads of Portugal. Whether this is unrestrictedly true in the Central European climate is to be provided with one, rather two, question marks. Triumph refers to the Pirelli Diablo Rosso III as an alternative in the driver’s manual. Regardless of the configuration: Triumph takes the issue of speed in the twin very seriously.

With sound comes the thrust
With Euro 5 comes a new exhaust system. The lines of the brushed and raised stainless steel double silencer system appear successful. Despite the significantly larger but still ingeniously hidden catalysts, it fits perfectly into the profile of the Speed Twin. The 1200 twin still has a fist behind its ears: Between 3,000 and 7,000 tours, 100 Newton meters of torque is the lowest value, between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm the twin shovels around 110 Nm into the transmission, the maximum 112 Nm comes in at 4,250 tours now a little earlier. The horsepower, which has increased by three to 100, is almost a minor matter. Despite the rev counter: The sound is a good indicator of whether you are driving in the correct rev range. Rule of thumb: if it sounds right, it pushes right. The large two-cylinder revs up so quickly and cleanly, the old wish of a quickshifter is high on the list and remains unfulfilled by Triumph.
Modern Classic Electronics
The lean angle-sensitive systems also have to be avoided: you will look in vain for a 6-axis IMU in the Speed Twin. This does not stand in the way of the correct coordination of the existing ABS and traction control. The traction control is matched to the respective driving mode and can be deactivated. The injection mappings have also been revised: the criticized load changes and the harsh throttle response are a thing of the past.
Ergonomics with limits
It all depends on the size! 1.87 meters is just a little too big for this wonderful motorcycle. The handlebars sit a little too low and too close to the body and the knee angle is too acute in the long run due to high-mounted notches. Drivers under 1.85 or even better 1.80 meters will probably have no problems with that. The seat height of 809 mm is basically suitable, only the beautiful tank pulls too narrow towards the bench and the knee joint does not fit 100% with longer legs.

Much more performance for just a little more money
In terms of price, the new Speed Twin is a mellow 300 euros above the 2020 model. In view of the increased performance that is offered, this is completely okay. In Germany it is 12,550 euros plus ancillary costs. The Speed Twin will be available from trusted Triumph dealers from August 2021.
Conclusion
Chassis finally top. Brake finally good. Motor with Euro 5, with more power and more horses. Price: Just a few euros more. Triumph Speed Twin: Precision landing.
Reduced to a few impressions, the 2021 version of the Triumph Speed Twin looks really good. The chassis is finally working as hoped, the new brake is at eye level and the engine is still a powerful, disguised athlete. The new, better package costs little more than the old version. Strong.
