PS editor Robert Gluck is at the start with a KTM EXC 525. He was infected with the rally virus three years ago, and now the Tuareg is going to Africa for the third time. 200 bikes, over 60 cars and a few Paris-Dakar trucks start.

To get straight to the point: It just didn’t go that well. Yes, the 2013 edition of the Tuareg rally went anything but according to plan for PS man Rob Gluck. Although the tactical decision is the hard one KTM 690 Rallye Replica at home and replacing it with a lightweight EXC 525 was spot on, this year the off-road fan only got his teeth on the teeth instead of the trophy. Almost every day. Here is a brief summary of what happened in Tunisia. Detailed reports in the PS edition 5/2013 and in MOTORRAD will follow shortly.
Day 1 of the rally: Over 200 kilometers of special stage in the dunes of Douz are pending. The KTM comes to a standstill after just nine kilometers. She pulled sand through the air filter and died miserably from it. In the evening in the paddock, the search for replacement pistons and cylinders begins – unsuccessfully.

Thus, the second day becomes a day of travel in the service truck from Team Roadstar-Motorcycles. Since the Englishman Wesley Beane had a fatal accident on this day, there was little activity in the paddock in the evening in addition to grief. People have time to chat and Thorsten Kaiser from Kaufbeuren finds the spare parts that Robert Gluck needs in his truck. Since it is too late for repairs and the third day of the journey has been canceled anyway due to the accident, the EXC has to wait another day before repairing it.
Rob Gluck and KTM are back at the start for the 4th stage and start the rally from the bottom of the ranking list. Perfect navigation and a high basic speed could have resulted in a 5th place in the daily ranking, if a fuel line hadn’t broken … So the pairing had to be content with 13th place in the daily ranking.

The fifth stage then unfortunately became the last of the brave test editor. Shortly before the first checkpoint of the 370 km long test, the engine dies again – the Tunisian sand has stopped it once more.
Frustrated, but a lot richer in experience, the 2013 Tuareg rally ended for Rob Gluck two days later with a lackluster award ceremony. Is he now cured of the rally virus? Not in life!

Stage 1 (Saturday 9.3.)
Hell breaks loose at exactly 8:50 a.m. with the start of the first stage. The sand of the small dunes is hell. Especially the slipstream side is as soft as thin shit and animal deep. Incredible scenes play out, people roll over as they drive down from the dunes, and my front wheel suddenly sinks in as well. I fight until my forearms close.

Silence and sadness in the paddock of the Tuareg rally. The Briton Wesley Beane had a serious fall on the second stage (10.3.) And succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident. Our thoughts are with his family.
After 20 minutes I am at CP (Checkpoint) 1 and am well placed in the front third to fourth of the field. Eureka, that’s good! I keep pissing until PUFF, the stove, goes out. Drama! So seat and tank down, spark plug out. Frustration – no more spark. The replacement plug doesn’t have any either, so the pick-up or the ignition coil is probably screwed up. Make an emergency call, wait for recovery.
Karlheinz with the big MAN KAT comes after an hour. I have to sit in the back of the container because the cab is already full. I vomit almost permanently for 15 minutes until I get to the hotel. Back at the base camp, troubleshooting begins.
