Tuareg rally 2013
An editor in a hurry through Tunisia
Desert rallies are formative events; opposites such as travel and racing speed are fueled – lust and frustration are closely related. Test editor Robert Gluck describes the 2013 Tuareg rally from his point of view.
Robert luck
09/12/2013
It runs! The sixth competition day of the 2013 Tuareg Rally in Tunisia has just started, and I’m burning through the low, but very nasty, because extremely soft dunes. Having started the race from the fourth wave of the start, it’s easy to drive at a high pace. I just have to follow in the footsteps of the twelve people who started before me and every now and then take a look at my trip master and my road book.

Catapult-like flight over the handlebars
I can trust the tracks in the sand, because the guys in front of me are the top ten of the rally, so they can navigate quickly and safely. A group of three comes into view, I recognize the Swedes with their Husabergs. I crawl closer, finally overtake and am as happy as Bolle in my helmet. “Today it works! After three days of humility and the bright spot on yesterday’s fifth stage, today is your day! You can finally show what you really can do! ”Hardly thought through, my front wheel bores up over the wheel axle into the actually hard, windward side of a dune. A short, catapult-like flight over the handlebars follows.
The landing is soft, the realization clear: the desert knows no mercy. Once inattentive, she punishes you relentlessly. I get up, put them down KTM on its side, pick it up and start. Keep burning in front of the Swedes through the sea of waves of sand until the engine on the tripmaster dies gently and peacefully at kilometer 32.2. No whistle, no puff, it goes out as if someone had turned off the ignition. After countless starting attempts and an increasingly weak battery, a anxious look into the air filter box. It’s full of sand, the air filter is completely clogged – the evidence is clear: the engine has drawn sand and no more compression. That means engine failure number two and the final end of the rally for me.
Preparations for the rally
The preparations for the trip began months before the start. In addition to the necessary increase in basic fitness by jogging, cycling or swimming, there were also logistical issues to be clarified. The starting shot before the starting shot was given when the entry was submitted, then the organizing began: Who is coming? Who does the rally service during the race? Which spare parts does the service provide, which do you have to pack yourself? Where do we meet? Who flies, who drives, how many rental cars are needed for the transfer from the airport to the bivouac? Who screws or helps on site?
fact
In a rally lasting several days, equipment is essential.
In my case, Robby Labinsky, a KTM dealer from Furth, took over the service. He transported the racing motorcycle from Furth in his truck to Duoz and back again. He also loaded the spare parts box, the extra wheel set and the clothes bag so that I could fly to Tunisia with light luggage. No sooner had the topics of service, arrival and departure as well as accommodation in dry cloths than the subtleties began. The motorcycle had to be set up, safety equipment and clothing suitable for the desert had to be obtained. Endless phone calls who worried about something filled the evenings in winter, ensuring increasing anticipation for the actual start in mid-March.
I pull my mobile phone out of my backpack and call the race management. Rainer, the organizer of the rally, is on the phone himself and records my GPS coordinates. He asks for patience, because in the dune field of today’s stage already now, only 60 minutes after the start, many participants have technical problems or have to give up and be rescued. To be on the safe side, I send an SMS with my location to the organization and climb the dune in front of which my KTM died.
The KTM EXC sucks sand on the very first day
While the strong wind carries away the dune ridge, I look back over the last few days. Actually, when I took part in the Tuareg rally for the third time, I wanted to finally reach the finish line without any defects. Just wanted to drive through without a breakdown, enjoy Tunisia and the landscape. And then that: on the very first day, my KTM EXC sucks in sand and refuses to work. Almost 5,000 euros had been spent at this point, only to be sitting in the desert sand after nine kilometers with a defective engine.
The search for spare parts in the bivouac followed. The cylinders and pistons of my 525s were flat, they had to be replaced. KTM models are preferred on rallies, as everything can be found for them in every bivouac. I experienced the rule-confirming exception: I was not able to get hold of the parts either on the evening of the first or the entire second day of the rally. Frustration set in until the legendary rally mechanic Thorsten Kaiser came up to me with a broad grin and bequeathed me used parts that he had found “somewhere at the bottom” in one of his boxes. I was very happy, especially when my motorcycle was running again less than five hours later and I was back in the race.
A decent fourth day of driving, which is held on a circuit around the original film sets of the first “Star Wars” part, was followed by the successful fifth stage. I fly through this day’s classification, which is peppered with hard – for a desert rally too hard – Enduro sections, with Warp 9, which puts me in an excellent starting position on the sixth day of driving. And this day should be mine, should let me forget the frustration of the engine failure.
“As an individual traveler, I should be scared now”
I’m still waiting for the mountain truck. The wind has subsided, no shade and so shortly before noon it is now really cozy on the dune. Other rally participants have not come by for a long time, silence and space surround me. And I enjoy it. The competition, the race, the costs – it all seems miles away, even in a different life. As an individual traveler, I would have to get scared and try to save myself somehow. As it is, however, I can rely on Rainer to send the mountain truck to my location and that sooner or later I will return to the bivouac safely.
fact
Ready-to-eat heroes seek shadows on the Berge truck.
Hours later in the camp, the frustration is spreading again. While my teammates report euphorically about the day, swap air filters and change oil or tires, I can only sit around depressed and listen to them. Then an inner kick in the ass: “Don’t hang around here, make yourself useful!” Exactly, after all, the others are still in the running. I fill up motorcycles, help with the work that is due, just like the way the guys helped me with my engine repairs two days ago. All for one, one for all! That’s exactly why I love rallying. It is this mixture of competition and travel, of individual maximum performance on the stage and team spirit in the paddock that inspires and weighs more than anything else. The complexity of the sport is enormous. On the one hand you have to be able to drive fast, on the other hand you have to protect the material. You have to be able to navigate, tweak and weigh up when risk is worthwhile and when it should definitely be avoided.
And then there’s the brutal, immediate rigor of the race and the desert that teaches you humility in a second. Rally driving is a school for life, formative and contagious. And honestly: No matter how much engine damage I will have, I will always go on rallies. Come what may!

Equipment
happiness
Almost indestructible: quarter inch Zyklop ratchet set from Wera.
Safety comes first in every competition: I protect my body with clothing, e.g. B. by Scott. The upper body armor with back protector as well as knee pads, gloves and glasses come from this house. Likewise the dual raid suit with camelbak in the jacket and detachable sleeves for hot days.
Signal rockets, two telephones, first aid kit
There are only two criteria for a helmet: it has to be safe and, above all, comfortable. B. on motocross helmets from Shark. At least as worthy of protection as the head are the feet, without which nothing works in an emergency. The Tech 8 boots from Alpinestars are my first choice here, mainly because of the removable inner shoes. I pack the mandatory safety equipment that must be on hand on every stage in a Deuter Trans Alpine backpack with a 30 liter volume and an extra Camelbak compartment. After all, signal rockets, two telephones, first aid kits, four liters of drinking water, a map, compass, Vespers and light spare parts such as fuses have to be stored somewhere.
What does it cost to participate in a rally?
fact
The new vehicle has worn out a little over 2500 kilometers.
The hard truth first: if you take part in a desert rally, you can count yourself lucky if you bring your motorcycle home in one piece. Damage caused by falls is an essential part of the budget, engine damage should be taken into account and the total loss of the vehicle should be kept in mind. Anyone who has such a worst-case scenario on their screen will at least only be positively surprised.
You should budget 5000 euros
For a hobby rally like the Tuareg (www.tuareg- rallye.com) with six to seven days of driving and a distance of around 2500 kilometers in North Africa, you should budget 5000 euros. The costs at a glance:
- Entry fee and optional hotel accommodation: 1850 euros
- Rally service including motorcycle transport to and from Germany: 800 to 1000 euros
- Round-trip flight to Tunis and rental car (Tunis –Douz): 600–700 euros
- tire & Mousse: 700 euros
- Gasoline for motorcycles and rental cars around 500 euros
The conversion costs for converting an ordinary enduro into a rally suitable racer with navigation equipment, a large tank and a second set of wheels amount to at least 2500 euros.
