Free choice of jacket
Would you like an airbag vest that you can combine with your favorite jacket? There are now many products on the market that have been developed to be worn under or over any jackets and suits.

Buy something? Sensor-controlled airbags with pyrotechnics trigger faster than their own shadow, so no rip cord system can even come close. In the case of nasty accident scenarios in everyday life, the e-airbags are clearly ahead thanks to the ultra-short reaction time. In the case of typical falls on the racetrack, however, mechanical ripcord systems also provide quite acceptable performance. We’ll show you which systems are currently on the market – for over and under, with and without a ripcord.
Alpinestars
Alpinestars
Alpinestars Tech-Air 5: price still unknown (example image). Airbag vest that can be worn under any textile jacket, electronic airbag. Available from March 2020.
At the beginning of January, Alpinestars will be presenting its latest airbag vest based on the Tech-Air 5 system at CES 2020 in Las Vegas. According to the manufacturer, the vest can be worn under any textile jacket. Shoulders, chest, ribs and the entire back should be protected when the trigger is released. The airbag vest is connected to the associated app on the smartphone via Bluetooth and provides information on the charge status, among other things. 30 hours of driving time should be possible with one battery charge, in an emergency the airbag should take a maximum of 40 milliseconds to be fully inflated.
With a free update of the app and the control software for airbag deployment, an additional race mode is available that trims the deployment sensors for use on the racetrack. The race mode is not intended for sporty road drivers, it should only be activated for use on the racetrack.
Dainese
Dainese
Dainese Smart Jacket D-Air: 599 euros. Vest that can be worn over or under clothing, electronic airbag, foldable, two styles (women and men).
A few years ago, Dainese’s focus on airbags was still in the one-piece segment, now the Italians are giving full throttle to the West too. You are mainly thinking about daily use without reducing the safety aspect. The Smart Jacket can be worn under suitable jackets because it fits tightly to the body. As it is foldable, the vest can also be carried in a backpack.
Gimoto
manufacturer
Gimoto V-Race 3.0 RR: 740 euros. Cowhide vest, optionally in the colors of your choice and made of kangaroo leather, cordless or with a pull cord, back protector.
At EICMA 2019, Gimoto will be presenting its specially developed air protection. The highlight: The vest can be triggered either by pull cord or electronically, 2 in 1, so to speak. So you can always adapt the vest to your individual requirements. This feature is also available on the racetrack counterpart of the same name, the V-Race RR Hybrid (photo).
Hit-Air
manufacturer
Hit-Air CrossCountry: 430 euros. Textile vest with mechanical airbag, available in three sizes.
The Japanese brand is one of the oldest suppliers of airbag vests – hit-air vests with ripcord release were already available around the turn of the millennium. In the meantime, the original model has been revised and this universal vest is intended to protect not only the back, but also the lumbar vertebrae and ribs. An upgrade through the use of conventional protectors, as is now common practice with other manufacturers, is not possible.
Helite
manufacturer
Helite Turtle 2.0: 560 euros. Textile vest with a mechanical airbag system with a pull cord, back protector.
The French are the top dogs in the airbag vests segment. Many other manufacturers trust the technology and quality of their products and use them unchanged in their own garments. Whether on the street or on closed slopes: Helite vests have become an indispensable part of the scene.
Buse
manufacturer
Buse airbag vest: 549.95 euros. Textile vest, mechanical airbag system, removable back protector.
The German full-service supplier Buse has just entered the airbag business. The accessories company offers a universally applicable vest that is worn over clothing, designed in the typical Buse design. The airbag system is from the French specialist Helite and is activated with a rip cord.
hero
manufacturer
eVest clip-in from Held and In & Motion: 349.95 euros, In & Box (purchase 399 euros / rent 12 euros / month / track 25 euros / year). Airbag system from In & Motion, back protector.
In the case of universally applicable airbag vests, Held is currently represented on the market with four different products. A new model is the cooperation with the French technology manufacturer In & Motion. The airbag system is activated via a monthly subscription. In & Motion promises that the airbag algorithm should learn from the networking in order to function as best as possible in a wide variety of situations, for example to suppress the ignition of the airbag when it is not needed despite an accident.
Klim
manufacturer
Klim Ai-1 Airbag Vest: an estimated 360 euros for the vest and the equivalent of 11 euros per month or 110 euros per year for the software subscription. Airbag system from In & Motion, back protector.
Just like Held, Klim also cooperates with the airbag manufacturer In & Motion and offers such a subscription model. The airbag vest can be worn under the jacket and should protect the chest, stomach, spine and neck in less than 60 milliseconds in an emergency.
Spidi
manufacturer
Spidi Full DPS Vest: 549.95 euros. Textile vest in three sizes, integrated airbag with rip cord, integrated back protector, optional chest protection.
Spidi also entered the airbag business at an early stage. Already in 1999 they worked on a rip cord system together with a Japanese partner. This release technology has not been abandoned to this day. The universally applicable vest is optionally available with or without a conventional back protector – which is currently the widespread standard. What is interesting, however, is the design of the airbag with a very lush air cushion around the collar.
