Different types cavort in the 125s scene: fat, nimble, cool and boring. When it comes to choosing the best touring, enduro or sports used machine, hard bandages are put on.
Thorsten Dentges, Uli Holzwarth
03/29/2006
A two-stroke meets a four-stroke. Says the two-stroke engine: “Hey, let’s turn the corner.” The four-stroke can
on the turn on – and gets powerful in the face. With a bloody nose and puffy eyes, the four-stroke engine then challenges the winner, who has already been celebrated by the buddies: “Listen ma ‘, you lawnmower, let’s go twelve loooong laps, then we’ll see who’s King of the Ring here.”
When the two-stroke engine was completely exhausted with a piston jam
is on the ground, the four-stroke continues to roll contemptuously towards the horizon. You could also tell the story of the gleaming chrome chopper, who puts on thick pants, but is sawed up by the narrow-minded tourer at the traffic light. Or from the cool supermoto who catches the eye of Boyz and Girlz at the village meeting point
pulls itself out, but the dirt one years old on the dirt road
Enduro that has come. There are many stories. And 125cc beginners can tell a lot.
Since many newcomers are not necessarily Rockefeller’s heirs, they often have to go back to a used dream machine-
grasp. There are not only countless stories from the eighth note-
liter scene, but also just as many models. In the hustle and bustle of thousands of used advertisements, you quickly lose track of things if you are not sure which type suits you.
MOTORRAD makes it short and painful (at least for
some of the contested candidates) and let eight 125cc bikes each in three fighting classes in the knockout system
compete. Prerequisite for this exclusive, together with Youngbiker.de, the largest community for young motorcyclists,
Fightclub initiated: Only models that were available for around 2000 euros were allowed to enter the ring (the year of construction of the used vehicle, which is usual at this price, is listed in brackets next to the respective model). The very young one was an exception Derbi GPR granted, because like in Grand Prix sport, she makes cheeky declarations of war against the brutally strong Aprilia RS – so
a lot of courage is rewarded with a wild card.
As independent referees they were hired out by brands-
Engaging dealers who have experience with used 125s. In addition, they became authorized dealers as well as young and youthful owners of the respective models
consulted from all over Germany, so that an expert audience stood on the ropes.
The different fighting styles are interesting. MZ For example: With your RT and SX / SM models, you can rely on a strong guide hand – the 15 hp, robust four-stroke single-cylinder can properly dispense, but also take it in. The MZ 125 SM in particular is very much in vogue as a sporty, enduring four-stroke engine. Strengths such as the famous engine hide weaknesses such as a thin dealer network and the associated problems with repairs and the supply of spare parts. the
inconspicuous RT clears up in its class and all slightly overweight cruisers with old-fashioned image out of the way, although these are also reliable and suitable for travel.
The Japanese manufacturers Honda and Yamaha, more than half of all, also earn a black belt
face fighters. With good dealer and workshop service as well as the outstanding reliability of their motorcycles, they diligently fight for point by point. The many impact hits wear down unsteady opponents. So it is hardly surprising that the
old, venerable and quite inconspicuous Yamaha DT 125 brings home a class win. She’s an old hand in the scene, but still as fit as a sneaker. And their monetary claims are modest. The young star Honda CBR 125 R tries it in the used fight club also over the ash rail. It is already inexpensive to acquire when new, and it costs accordingly little as a young used one.
However, some 125cc fans actually find the CBR to be a cheap number, as it comes across as rather narrow-chested with its narrow tires and small stature. But since young bikers usually have to keep their money together, the reliable, young Japanese woman who is made in Thailand is shortlisted. But they also squint at older, rassi-
gen, but mostly capricious European women over. The one
in the intoxication of love then possibly pull the last thaler out of your pocket. The Aprilia RS is such a pretty one that is pretty good at it. Not quite as idiosyncratic as the Mito, which brings her class victory ahead of the all-too-sensible Honda.
Because reason and youth do not really go together, and the majority of 125cc used buyers are young people. So inexperienced young bikers are not completely covered
go to the inspection and test drive, here are seven important basic rules:
n Watch out for falls, falls and other damage (e.g. from being chained to lanterns). n Many previous owners: have the checkbook and workshop invoices shown. Look for inexperienced tuning attempts and conversions without an operating permit. n Check wearing parts: Various add-on parts such as chain sets, instruments, cables or fittings are not of particularly high quality at the factory for reasons of cost; negligent maintenance can result in consequential damage. n Caution, allow high clutch wear to slip. n Very high depreciation with little ge-
asked models. n caution when external appearance
and the odometer reading do not want to match: With 125 cc, the speedometer is often turned! n Consider not only the purchase price, but also the follow-up costs, in particular-
Their consumption (two-stroke) and spare parts costs (especially for hardware store 125 cc and Chinese no-name products), otherwise it can be expensive.

Winner: Honda Varadero 125
As a travel enduro, the Varadero is more of a lone fighter in its class. She has a small but loyal fan base. The heavyweight Honda sends the only slightly lighter one Sachs Roadster thanks to excellent confidence-
casualness and good resale chances on the mat.
Winner: MZ RT 125
The practical and somewhat staid MZ rarely gives up. In addition, the German Emme has enough punch. The Korean Hyosung with a V2 engine and a larger dealer network, it doesn’t stink because it weighs too much and had quality defects at the beginning of its career.
Winner: Honda VT 125 Shadow
Japan versus Korea: The tried and tested fighter from Honda has a strong family behind her and is boxing the heavyweight single-cylinder cruiser from Daelim with a targeted blow from the ring. It’s just the more reliable motorcycle. A larger following cheers them on.
Winner: Yamaha XV 125 Virago
No knockout, just a narrow victory on points for Yamaha. The two reliable mini V2 choppers give almost nothing to each other. Just hers
better availability on the used market and higher value retention
give the Virago the minimal lead.
Winner: Yamaha DT 125 R
Both lightweights are lively, agile and spin lightly across the field.
The best prerequisites to be among the frontrunners in your fighting class. However, DT has the larger dealer network, is more reliable and on the
Used market easier to get hold of due to higher quantities.
Winner: MZ 125 SX / SM
In the German-German duel, the woman from Zschopau kicks the woman from Nuremberg out of the ring. The MZ is superior to the Sachs in most disciplines. The famous, powerful four-stroke SX / SM in particular impresses with its stability and qualifies the Saxon as a top favorite.
Winner: Husqvarna WRE 125
A little getting on in years, but still more than fit. The two capricious featherweights can really crack and are still highly respected athletes. The Husky has a slightly better image, is offered more frequently and scores with higher value retention.
Winner: Yamaha TDR 125
Two strokes is the better strategy in this duel. The battle-tested, poisonous TDR knocks out the young, very inexpensive, but a little too brave XR. The new Honda costs less than 3000 euros and does not sell badly. With a slightly more powerful engine, it would land more hits even as a used vehicle.
Winner: Honda CBR 125 R
It is true that a new one costs Zongshen less than 2000 euros, and there are astonishingly many service stations for repairs and spare parts – just nobody wants the largely unknown Chinese. In contrast to the bestseller Honda CBR 125 R, also a bestseller. A runaway victory for Japan.
Winner: Cagiva Mito 125
The Italian Mito simply puts on a better show. In addition, it has a chassis that makes racing dreams come true – although the engine is not an endurance athlete. The Minarelli two-stroke in the Sachs also not, so that the German only lands a real hit due to the larger dealer network.
Winner: Aprilia RS 125
The Derbi from Spain is an adequate opponent for top dog Aprilia: Grand Prix spirit, great chassis and powerful engine. However, she is new to the
Scene and hardly available as a used one. As a rookie with little dealer support, she gets a lot from the experienced RS.
Winner: Honda NSR 125 R
A tough fight between the two Japanese women, from which the Honda emerged as the clear winner because it is a constant in the used market and has a huge fan base. When it comes to driving dynamics, reliability and dealer and workshop service, the Yamaha is by no means inferior.
Finals of the best
The Luschen are sifted out and take care of their wounds – the winners get back into the ring after the preliminary round and have to fight for the crown of the best in their class. As usual in the tough knockout system.
Class winner: Aprilia RS 125

Lich inexpensive and very reliable four-stroke CBR, which previously had the

MZ RT 125
The RT 125 came out in 2000, and with
her came back MZ. ýÿMZ is backýÿ was the advertising message. The first construction completely developed in Zschopau since the fall of the Berlin Wall
has a joyfully turning, modern four-
stroke with double camshaft, four valves and six-speed gearbox. All around, the Saxons knitted a completely new chassis, and with its large and comfortable bench, the touring machine looked independent from the start. That made people sit up and take notice, even among motorcyclists who otherwise have nothing to do with 125 cc. However, the RT fared like many bread-and-butter machines: They trigger very few emotions. Among youngsters, the 125 cc had to work hard to earn its reputation as an unproblematic and reliable companion. But at the latest when the
first friend comfortably travels as a passenger, the moderate image of the motorcycle is forgotten and the technical qualities come to the fore. Of which there are a few: three
Liters consumption per 100 kilometers, that sounds like
good for stressed wallets. Or the snappy brakes with steel braided lines ýÿ also great. A stable yet handy chassis. What more do you want? A good specimen is easy to find on the used market with a little searching, but the new RT, which costs around 3500 euros, is known to be reliable
Size also needs its price. Worth mentioning: In 2003 there was still a classic version with wire-spoke wheels and chrome parts. Technically, nothing has changed since 2000. Why also? With accessories such as a tank bag, luggage rack, top case or engine protection bar, the RT is not beautiful, but it is practical. And that’s good.
Prices: MZ RT 125
With a bit of luck, you can get hold of a well-maintained RT with around 20,000 kilometers from 1500 euros. Most offers, however, are around 2000 euros: mainly vehicles built in 2001/2002 with 10,000 to 15,000 kilometers. Because of the guarantee-
performance, it is worth checking dealer offers.
Yamaha DT 125 R.
The Yamaha DT 125 R has in its long construction period (1991 to 2003) on the
Established used market with an absolutely mature concept, good dealer network and excellent spare parts supply. That’s right
Adult-looking DT is in great demand, and accordingly it is stable in value. For two-stroke conditions, buyers receive a very durable design that, with regular maintenance, does not require an overhaul of the cylinder and piston until after about 30,000 kilometers at the earliest. Other pluses are the well-tuned engine with impressive performance and decent brakes. Overall that is
DT 125 R a motorcycle without typical weaknesses, apart from the rust-prone exhaust.
The selection of used vehicles is huge, with mainly models built after 1999
recommend with 14 hp engine. Even in the 80 km / h throttle variant, these bikes march forward quickly because the throttling only cuts the engine speed and thus the top speed in the last gear. Has been listening since 2003
the face-lifted DT 125 with the suffix ýÿREýÿ, has a significantly sleeker design and is only brought to life with an electric starter. There is a lot for classic enduro
Third-party accessories available, a practice-
appropriate equipment such as luggage rack, turning-
counter or cooling water display is standard-
moderately on board. The great chassis allows excursions into the terrain, does not limit the off-road fun. The narrow, hard upholstered bench, a high fuel consumption and a stately seat height for small people make traveling and everyday fun more likely.
Prices: Yamaha DT 125 R
The majority of all advertisements are private sales. There are hardly any acceptable offers for less than 1000 euros. The mileage is sometimes over 50,000 kilometers, so the status ýÿ follow-up costs are programmed. Ordinary models built between 1999 and 2001 with a mileage of around 30,000 kilos-
meters are available from around 1300 euros, for around 2000 euros you can get the DT with around 20,000 kilometers.
Aprilia RS 125
Horny, hornier, Aprilia RS 125 – Among the youngsters, the Italian Rennsemmel has been number one in the charts for years. No wonder, it seems RS 125 but to have turned straight from the racetrack onto the road. With its mighty, highly polished aluminum frame, the two-part banana swing arm and the stable upside-down fork, the firm spring elements and snappy brakes, the athlete, which has been built since 1993, is a real pleasure-
donor who lives up to its nickname Replica.
However, only in the unthrottled, barely
31 hp variant. Neutered to 15 hp and slowed down to the maximum permissible speed of 80 km / h for 16 to 17-year-olds, the racy Italian loses a lot of her fascination. Which is why a large part of the RS 125 is on the road without any jokes and therefore illegally.
Despite the excellent reputation that the Aprilia RS 125 enjoys with young bikers, those interested in used should not expect a Yamaha DT 125 R or Honda CBR 125 R to be problem-free. For example, cylinders and pistons have to be used after 15,000 to 20,000
Kilometers and that is more the rule than the exception. Analogous to the exorbitantly high new price currently just under 5000 euros, the spare and lintel parts at Aprilia are not exactly part of the special offers, and there are always delivery problems. Second-hand offers should therefore be checked particularly carefully for wear, tuning measures and hidden fall marks. Otherwise the long-awaited dream bike will quickly turn into a financial nightmare.
Prices: Aprilia RS 125
Anyone looking for a used RS 125 has to
Overcoming the highest hurdles in the 125cc class: For less than 1,600 euros you can hardly find a crash-free model with a mileage of less than 30,000 kilometers. A lower limit of 2000 euros appears more realistic. There are at least bikes with around 20,000 kilometers on the clock, but most of them are older
than six years.
