Bent or otherwise damaged steering stops indicate that the bike had at least a moderate fall. Then the frame could be warped. Better hands off.

Check the entire brake system for leaks: A leak of brake fluid (when was it last changed?) Leads to brake failure. Are the brake lines still okay or do they look brittle and cracked??

If the chain can be completely lifted off the sprocket with your fingers, it is worn and must be replaced.

4/16
Do the low and high beams, indicators and the all-important brake light work? Does the horn go? Cockpit lighting and odometer OK? The cable connectors show signs of corrosion?
archive
5/16
The same applies to the shock absorber: Everything tight? When the stern is pushed in, it must rebound easily, but must not swing in any way.
archive
6/16
The brakes should be carefully checked: Are the pads still strong enough? A wear groove usually provides information.
archive
7/16
Are the front and rear wheel bearings still good? To control the wheel in the air and try to wiggle sideways up and down. No play should be felt.

Part 2 – Care / maintenance status: With sheet steel tanks, a look inside is part of it: Do the inner walls show traces of rust? Rust can damage the carburetor or the injection.
archive
9/16
Does the chain have sufficient and even slack? Chains that are tensioned too tightly lead to gear damage in the long run and can break.

If you buy a used one, you should pay attention to the condition of the bike. MOTORRAD shows you which points are important. Part 1 – Wear: It must be possible to move the handlebars easily, evenly and without a locking point from stop to stop. Then the steering head bearing is still OK. To check, stand on the main stand or pull the motorcycle onto the rear wheel and side stand as shown in the picture.

Oil level okay? Or is the engine oiling? Carefully look for traces of oil everywhere. In the case of panels, it is essential to also check underneath and especially in the panel keel at the bottom.

12/16
Part 3 – Electrical: Are all lights working? If ABS is on board, brake once within the control range during the test drive as a test. This is completely safe with the rear brake.

The prescribed minimum tread depth for tires is 1.6 millimeters. And all around. Also check the sidewalls for damage or cracks.
archive
14/16
Is the coolant level correct, does the battery have enough acid, and are the poles greased? If not, then it suggests a careless, sloppy owner.
archive
15/16
Are the brake discs still okay, or are they grooved, thinly ground in the middle?

Leaky fork seals lead to loss of cushioning. Such traces of oil indicate that a complicated replacement is necessary here.

Second-hand shops offer potential for pleasure and frustration for both sides: When selling a motorcycle, sellers must be careful to actually get their money and to be safe from liability claims. When buying a motorcycle, buyers rightly expect to get reasonable goods with a traceable history for their money.
We have put together basic tips for both parties here that should help them to enjoy used motorcycle sales for what they should be: great fun that makes a shared hobby even more attractive.

Checklist for buying a used motorcycle

- Don’t get stuck on a particular model, color, or year of manufacture. This only puts you under unnecessary pressure and the offer is too limited. Inquire about possible alternatives at an early stage.
- Never go to the viewing appointment alone.
- Plan enough time. To be fair, cancel appointments that you cannot or cannot keep.
- Stay away from machines that have not even done the simplest maintenance work (oil level, chain tension, etc.). Take particular care when the engine is warm.
- Do not let the seller put pressure on you (“I still have several interested parties”). Hardly any offer is unique.
- Basically take a test drive or have it done by a knowledgeable acquaintance.
- Not on loose promises (“TuV / registration no problem”) trust. If it’s that simple, the seller could have done it himself. Fundamentally, there is only money when all promises have been fulfilled.
- Listen not only to your head, but also to your stomach. You like a motorcycle straight away – or you never like it.
- Always carry cash on your body, do not leave it in a jacket or backpack.
- Always make a written sales contract. Record all warranted properties in writing.

The internet is the most popular medium for selling used motorcycles. But the Internet second-hand markets are full of lousy images that are more of a deterrent than whet the appetite for the vehicle on offer.
Whether a photo is suitable for advertising has nothing to do with money, location or camera technology. The photos shown here were taken with an ancient two million pixel digital camera within 50 meters of downtown Stuttgart.
What counts when choosing a motif is a little time, flexibility, imagination and common sense. In the attached picture gallery we reveal what is important when taking photos for the sale of a motorcycle.
Selling a used motorcycle
- You only need a single prospect to buy. So don’t panic if the phone doesn’t keep ringing.
- As a matter of principle, no price discussions are held on the phone. Serious prospects only do this when they come to view the property.
- Obvious talkbags and stupid chatterboxes on the phone are short and choked. It’s the time of the salesman that guys like that steal.
- For every euro that you put into the reprocessing of the machine, you get back double or triple. So one “Cleaning and mending lesson” plan on.
- If you are interested in a fixed viewing appointment, ask for their exact name and telephone number. This does not protect against non-comers, but increases the chance that the guys will cancel if they cannot or do not want to keep the appointment.
- Make sure to show your driver’s license before a test drive.
- Keep your ID card as security during the test drive.
- Always make a written sales contract. Do not give any assurances that cannot be proven 100 percent (e.g. freedom from accidents, mileage).
- Cash laughs. All other forms of payment (check, bank transfer, etc.) are taboo. Only hand over vehicle papers after full payment.
- Have all handovers (vehicle, papers, number of keys, money) confirmed in writing with place, date and time
