First of all: rather boots than sneakers. All test candidates offer decent values, at least when it comes to safety for motorcycling. Stable sole construction, abrasion-resistant upper material, usually good protection against stripping. Seen this way: it’s enough, you can be satisfied, right? No. Because only three models were able to convince in the package and are so good that it is a pleasure to go on tour. With all other boots there is pressure somewhere, there is a leak, or there is a lack of quality. It’s okay to ride it. With daily use, however, the question arises why one has skimped at this point of all places.

This is how MOTORRAD tests

Waterproof touring boots up to 150 euros in the test

Thorsten Dentges

On the way it becomes clear whether the shoe pinches anywhere. With this copy, there is too little pressure, the shaft protrudes far too far.

The testers went on tour in France with the test samples as early as the spring of 2016. During trips on a very winding mountain route, the boots had to prove their fit and comfort. The testers paid particular attention to freedom of movement when turning in switchbacks and the feeling for levers and notches when shifting and braking. Any pressure or chafing points could be detected at the same time. Walkways, comparable to shorter shopping aisles, supplemented the driving laps in order to test walking comfort and indoor climate in a practical way.

The testers examined each pair of boots extensively and assessed safety features, the quality of the materials and the workmanship. Back in the editorial office, in addition to weight and other measurements, the moisture protection was determined. For this purpose, two test samples per model were filled with water and should hold tight for approx. 16 hours. The remaining specimens had to withstand a ten-minute immersion test.

Testers’ opinions

Waterproof touring boots up to 150 euros in the test

mps photo studio

Editor Thorsten Dentges (44).

Cheap climate membrane. Very delicate, can tear quickly. I’m talking about the membrane in the boot, the best-known representative: Goretex, not in comparison here. The membranes built into the test boots are mostly cheap (processed), and it is unclear whether the boot shoemakers ever checked them. Logically, with the predicate “waterproof, breathable” a shoe sells better. And above all more expensive – stupid only if the purchased function is useless.

If even rarely used boots fail the simple filling and immersion test, I find that just weak. I know that membranes are very difficult to process – as I said, extremely delicate, can tear quickly. But producers shouldn’t take this as carte blanche for botch-ups. But the air conditioning is even worse. In the blazing sun it unfortunately gets damp on the feet so quickly that one has to say in the low-budget class: Without a (membrane) simply feels better!

Why not a less than 100 euro test?

Proven motorcycle boots for less than 100 euros can hardly be made out for this money – only a handful of current models. And surprisingly, the suppliers do not have much confidence in these products, at least for a test in MOTORRAD they would rather not send the cheap boots into the race. Without further ado, we therefore increased the price limit by 50 percent, so that the number of models reached a respectable level. After all, Hein Gericke was the only supplier who dared to put a sub-100-euro shoe with a climate membrane in the test. Unfortunately, the fear that cheap is not cheap was justified. The shoe in question already had a defect after the first ride, and all of the Bullson’s test samples failed in the wetness test. The boot made a pretty decent and robust impression at first when unpacking.

But to be clear: the other boots didn’t look better equipped or better processed. And despite a purchase price of up to 150 euros, they sometimes did not do significantly better. To denounce the Bullson with the lowest price alone would be unfair. All in all, there was more shadow than light. Main problem: the water tightness. In our wetness test, there was only one (!) Model – the Probiker – that passed without any criticism. Among the other candidates, some boots leaked after a few minutes, which is a problem in practice even with short rain showers. For others, water only seeped in droplets after hours. In these cases, normal tours should be possible with dry feet even in bad weather, so there was only a small deduction of points. But travel-friendly is different.

In addition, the sensitive membrane of boots that are worn frequently suffers and tears or tears through. In the long run, the moisture protection is guaranteed not to improve. With 150 euros for a bag you can still buy good touring boots that keep their rain protection function for a long time and sit comfortably. By the way, boots without a membrane with decent touring qualities can easily be found for up to 100 euros – reliable rain gaiters are available for 20 euros. Possibly a better option for beginners with a limited budget.
