Yamaha Tenere 700 World Raid prototype
Yamaha Tenere 700 World Raid (prototype)
Almost ready for series production
For a long time it was quiet about the prototype Yamaha Tenere 700 World Raid, the successor to the Yamaha XT 660 Z Tenere. Now Yamaha has launched a new test project and released some new information.

At EICMA 2016 Yamaha the prototype of a puristic enduro with the provisional model name “T7” was shown, which MOTORRAD was allowed to test drive in the course of 2017 (see below). The Tenere 700 World Raid, which Yamaha exhibited at the 2017 EICMA, has come a lot closer to a production motorcycle – even if the manufacturer still insists on the label “prototype”. A reduced seat height should be able to inspire more customers for the concept, and the roadworthiness of the chassis has also been thoroughly refined. Apart from the obvious key data (two-cylinder engine from the MT-07, Akrapovic exhaust, upside-down fork and shock absorber), there was unfortunately not much else to learn.

Now Yamaha promises to reveal more about the Tenere 700 World Raid in the coming weeks. In the recently published press release, the Japanese manufacturer announced that it would send some professional drivers on an extensive tour to test the prototype. Among others, Rodney Faggotter, Stephane Peterhansel, Adrien van Beveren, Nick Sanders, David Fretigne, Herbert Schwarz, Cristóbal Guerrero and Alessandro Botturi will be there. The tour, which begins in Australia and leads over several stages through Morocco, Argentina and Europe, is published on a specially created website (world-raid.com) and accompanied on social media. Hopefully the official announcement of the production model will not be long in coming.
Yamaha T7 prototype in the driving report
Ninety-nine. Seat height in centimeters. That can stumble even a 1.87 meter man who is used to opulent travel enduros. At least now when turning on a slightly sloping, narrow path. Started from the wrong side (embarrassing, beginner’s mistake), briefly lost balance, and the motorcycle tips over in slow motion. The driver holds against it. He would have had a light sports enduro under control in this situation, but the Yamaha T7 with its 175 kilos (at least says Yamaha) pushes down too full of lean angle, bang, there it is. As it is a unique prototype, a motorcycle that so far only few have been allowed to drive, doubly embarrassing
Great ergonomics and good-natured engine characteristics
Everything went smoothly in the field and on the country road. Great ergonomics, good-natured engine characteristics, the almost ridiculous weight for an adventure enduro – all of this gives you great confidence in this strange machine immediately after you set off. With a wheelbase of 1,555 millimeters, it shoots with a wheelbase of 1,555 millimeters over furrowed dirt road lanes, climbs steep gravel climbs with well-metered steam and wags around the corner on narrow asphalt belts with ease. Top! Well, mishaps happen in Enduro life, and Yamaha emphasizes that the concept machine, which is trimmed for adventure and sport, should easily put up with such things. Fortunately, the gear lever is quickly bent back into shape and the exclusive test drive continues. A reassuring note for all 1.87-meter-and-shorter people: With this radical seat height, the Yamaha T7, then certainly proud of its heritage with the additional title “Tenere”, will never come onto the market.
Video of the driving report of the Yamaha T7:
Seat height on the production model is not quite as high
The prototype was built as a rally machine, with a fine fork from Yamaha’s 450 WR models at the front, and an ultra-sporty shock absorber at the rear. The suspension travel is much longer than with normal touring enduros, but at least 240 millimeters at the front and 220 at the rear would be desirable for a road-legal version. And the high seat of the Yamaha T7, which is narrowly contoured for off-roading, offers zero comfort on less adventurous tours, which is to be expected: a seat height of less than 90 centimeters.
The Golden middle?
But this is exactly where speculation begins: What will Yamaha get on its wheels? A radical two-cylinder sports enduro or a mid-range touring machine with decent, but not extraordinary, off-road capabilities? Perhaps the golden mean, i.e. a robust globetrotter bike that doesn’t necessarily have to take a pillion passenger plus a fully packed case topcase set. The crossover machine Yamaha Tracer 700, for example, only has a payload of 171 kilos and weighs less than 200 kilos. Although very ambitious, the new T7 Tenere could also be just as light. In contrast to the rally-like prototype, however, you will have to rely on inexpensive mass-produced parts. Instead of filigree enduro wheels with blue anodized aluminum hubs, conventional wire-spoke wheels will probably be mounted. The light aluminum tank will probably have to give way to a steel or plastic barrel. If a travel range of a good 400 kilometers is aimed for, it would have to hold at least 16 liters – more than the stylish tank of the Yamaha T7. Instead of currently only provisionally cut carbon parts, a lacquered cladding will continue to put pressure on the weight. Plus a cockpit, headlights, indicators, ABS, a second brake disc at the front and a more stable rear frame and seat for pillion passengers and other components suitable for everyday use. And how much does a (double-loop) frame designed for off-road and motorway use weigh in? Also stay open.
Inexpensive travel enduro or rally machine?
What could hardly be used changed would be the engine. The compact and light in-line twin, well known from the mid-range hit MT-07, breaks well with 75 hp, delivers its torque in a broad and foolproof manner when driving off-road, is economical and reliable. Optimal. In series production, however, a different exhaust system has to be found than the Akrapovic sports system, which is impressive with its robust sound. At our exclusive meeting with the Yamaha T7, we weighed the machine, filled with a few liters of gasoline: 185 kilos. Should Yamaha now want to turn this prototype into an inexpensive travel enduro, i.e. less than 10,000 euros, the 200 kilos are unlikely to be sustainable. More realistic are 210 to 220 kilos. A sporty rally machine for Otto normal endurists with light, tasty parts would probably be in the price range of 11,500 euros plus. We will see. 2018 already?
Make sure to build this motorcycle!
Yamaha is silent about a market launch. It’s a shame, but the test drive continues, no time to re-drill. Ex-World Cup motocrosser Marco Dorsch now beats the Yamaha T7 across the course, jumps meters wide, drifts and excitedly explains to the Yamaha man: “At the back, a little more progression, but otherwise: Make sure to build this motorcycle!” Also professional globetrotter Jo Deleker, who is with us His one-cylinder Tenere, proudly graying out over tens of thousands of off-road kilometers, arrived for the drive, is enthusiastic. Should the new Tenere offer similarly good long-distance travel qualities, at least for soloists, then drive as athletically as the T7, with this great engine, yes then: “Yamaha, just do it!”.
